We are one step closer to an e-ink 60hz, full color display... and I really look forward to it...

Finally, a considerable compromise between a smart phone and the Kindle!

I would consider using this solely as an e-reader, reading web pages, and listening to podcasts. I wonder what the battery life would be like.

Why the hell to run a System with tons of slyders and Thinge to scroll. In my opinion you should not cooy the System from Smartphones with normal Screen. You should Build an ecossytem with just buttons, so the System is Perfect for the Screen and People less have the feeling that it is slow

That too, but also, I think it's worth keeping in mind that it's a question of drivers and settings - have a look at Dasung's Paperlike e-ink screen - it's also greyscale, and it does a solid ~15fps with little to no ghosting. So in practice - it's doable on eink!

I can't believe they put scrolling in their own apps. Anything that spans more than one screen needs to be changed into paged instead.

I literally just sold my Hisense a2 pro (another e ink phone). It was superb and I only sold it to pay for this phone. The snapdragon cpu performance on e ink is fantastic. So long as you know what you're buying here, this looks promising!

@@DarkPa1adin The E-ink screen refresh is not a cpu issue, it's th persistence of the e-ink. I use the display on a Rasberry Pi 3 and it can send info too fast to the screen which will look blurry

looks good as a secondary phone/much more portable ebook reader. Big plus is that you have all the apps available - Kindle, Kobo, 3rd party readers like Moon+,...

This looks intriguing! I personally don't use my phone a lot. The long battery life would be very beneficial.

So for those that are wondering. "There are various battery saving modes, such as the standard power saving and Super power saving mode. You can get around two weeks of usage in super power saving mode, as it shuts down lots of background processes."

It seems a good many commenters don't quite understand why this device exists. It isn't competing against regular smartphones, but it does offer an alternative for those who want to carry fewer devices with them or need a smartphone with longer battery span for whatever reason.

now just remove Android and make it SMS / call only and it's a perfect phone

So you can't read ebooks, listen to podcasts or do anything at all?

I am going to try it. It looks perfect for sailors and other people using it at full sunlight. I hope it supports Boating and other sailing chart apps to consult them on the deck of the boat. It should be great also for trekking.

IMO for regular business tasks it is amazing. Very good at reading emails / text on the road (no eye strain for long time reading) and excellent battery life. A colleague at work owns it and he charges the phone every week. I hope a laptop with e-ink is created. For office tasks it would be great both in terms of eye-strain and battery life.

We have different definitions of the word “flawless”. 😁

Love the battery life and always on display that doesn't use any energy. If camera can scan a QR code, it's good enough 4 me. There I thought phones were meant for making calls, and nowadays free texting via WhatsApp...Maybe checking a map or Duck Duck going. Don't even have an Instagram acc, facebook is for old people.

Which Andorid version is it running? And what about any other specifications? I am chanting while see the phone is lagging: "Be patient! Be patient! …"

Do you know where to buy the new eink color one from Hisense?

How strong it is ? I tend to abuse my phones because I'm quite clumsy and the be killed quite a few ereaders either by accidentally flexing their screens or letting them fall, so I need something with a bit of ruggedness.

I'm using this device for over 1 month too. And I'm lovin'it. You can full-refresh with double click the E-ink button, and It's useful when you read manga or pdf. And, I guess A5 can sense ambient light with front camera. Because if you cover the camera when A5 is booting on, this shows "don't cover front camera.". I can't say this is 100% true, but I think this is calibrating the sensor. Just for your information.

@@slavetonone3635 Sorry, I'm not sure. I'm using it in Japan. But I think that works on AT&T. Because A5 supports B2/B4/B5 frequency bands which used by AT&T.

@@edenserrot3492 Yes. But you can't login to Google on the app, so you can't use your favorite places lists or timeline. And, unfortunately A5 dosen't support GMS too. It meanse you can not use GPS location on apps which is getting that datas through GMS framework(almost apps including Google Maps).

Does the Hisense A5 E-ink phone still work in 2021? This means running the play store and most of the apps that you want! I'm personally most interested to use apps such as Quizlet and Anki on this phone plus reading apps as well as audible? On which Android is running now?

The E-ink readers and notebooks are cool in black & white, but for smartphones The E-ink smartphone would work much much better in colour. The only thing in the The E-ink paper devices is when you flip from one to another page in the device a slow gap of transition occur on it. I don't know if is the processor or the mechanism of the all E-ink devices work just like that. I love the idea of the E-ink readers, notebooks and smartphones technology.

Why did Amazon not think of it? A kindle with a phone function.

Really wish this review was focused from the perspective of an eReader since that’s your channel topic; not focused on a phone review. For example, does the side button do page flip on eReader apps? How do you load books in? What does the backlight look like - is it blue light or orange? How to deal with glare? These are all fundamental eReader questions.

I want it as my backup device but the price is a no go :(

Nihil it is an e ink display. That’s the whole point.

If it's E-Ink, does that mean it'll work without the backlight on in sunlight?

Does it have a landscape mode for reading?

I used Kindle once 6-7 years ago, it's fine for read but not confortable cos that laggy access that made me unhappy to use. Now we have this phone, and still lag and too slow responsive like old day. How about fix or develop faster E-Ink or somehow?

Does it do GPS logging and navigation?

This is the phone for me. Can't wait to buy it if it comes to my country.

This is what a Kindle firephone should be. Not necessarily to be a phone with kindle capabilities but a Kindle with phone capabilities. Id like a pocket kindle that can take sims and sd cards. Maybe use like TMobile digits. Take it on jogs, gyms and have a music player, back up phone,. Amazon really could sell and push omething like this and connect it to their eco system and it would catch... Fire

eInk only use power during a transition. When no backlight is used, it can show static image without using power.

ABSOLUTLY NOT. I have the YotaPhone 3, and I LOVE IT, but... it doesnt have light on the e-ink screen, so if is dark, i have to turn on the lights of the room or use the regular screen 😢
