His pants fell down! Averaging 85kmph in the Africa Eco Race to Dakar

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Faced with endless feeling terrain Stage 5 saw me racing fearless at full throttle for many hours. It was a mentally and physically draining day, with endless horizons, no major landmarks or features and nothing but vast empty spaced desert meaning navigation was to take center stage. Thankfully with my strong navigational skills and some tweaks to my bike yesterday it meant for a faster and shorter day today... only 9.5 hours riding my KTM rally replica bike.
During Day 5, Stage 5 of the Africa Eco Race to Dakar I was able to cover lots of mileage in record time with an average speed of 85km/h topping out at 116km/h. It was certainly a much faster rally stage than the days before even though it was still a relatively long off-road special stage of 404km.
It is easy to think that having a faster speed means easier terrain; which yes that can be correct but faster speeds while maintaining correct navigation from a paper scroll roadbook and focusing on rapidly reading and reacting to the terrain whilst holding the bike straight... is a challenge in itself.
I rode the day with some strong navigation, with Günter the giant Austrian and Tanika from Japan following behind in my path of dust.
After a total of 592km I got to the shores of Dakhla full of energy, my body is feeling far stronger than I thought it was going to be, I’m feeling really comfortable on the bike and even my hands are going strong, which is a good sign of my riding and body position.
STAGE 5 (Day 5) Fort Chacal → Dakhla
Liaison: 20.59km
Special stage: 404km
Liaison: 168km
Total: 592.59km
Distance completed so far: 2709.82km
Distance to Dakar: 3298.87km

Averaging 85 km/h over 550 km on a sportsbike on tarmac in Germany is really fast (don't let the police catch you). But it's quite another feat racing offroad through the desert. Hats off, Vanessa, to your skills and stamina. Günter/Nürnberg

...and then watch this EXCELLENT content to end the day. WIN. I just had the most wonderful day. Had breakfast with my family, rode my Africa Twin to COTA, met up with some cool people, watched the MOTO GP race (from under the bridge over turn 3), rode home w/ an awesone soundtrack, had dinner at home, ...

Another day completed Vanessa at much higher speeds. Flat terrain with few if any landmarks can be as boring as a wait for a bus in Wiltshire having read everything readable at the stop at least 12 times, checking watch 12, 402 times and counted all the leaves on the trees three times with different numbers each time. BUT You are riding fast so need to keep up your concentration and make progress only stopping from time to time for Günter to put his pants back on. The mental and physical energy must be draining. You did very well, at one point I thought I might have spotted a Wiltshire bus on the horizon for a moment but that must have been a mirage. Many thanks for sharing.

Venessa, are those fentanyl pain patches for your spine? If so, fentanyl when it starts to come out of your body, it itches like you would not BELIEVE! I had fentanyl pain injections on demand in hospital and once I was back home, it started! Like I have never experienced itching like it in my life before! I would have clawed my back until it bled it was that bad.

Hey Adam no it's just a Compex physio tap and plaster to prevent my spin rubbing the skin off on my bag as it sticks out. There's a section explaining it in one of the earlier parts of this race. So thankfully it was just the post stick itch so didn't last long

Two things "Girl". First, in the US military we separate the men from the boys through land navigation, under stress (Heavy packs and short time frames, ugly terrain and the like). You are doing it at 80+ km.hr and right on track. Stay bas ass Girl. The next one, we call candy bars, jerky, chips and the like Pogey Bait. If you can plan to have your most favoritist pogey bait ever on hand after your worst leg of the trail the moral boost is HUGE. Not just calories, but faith that the universe loves you and nothing can stop you. JUST DON'T QUIT! RLTW.
