"Christ’s arrangement with us is similar to a mom providing music lessons for her child. Mom pays the piano teacher. How many know what I am talking about? Because Mom pays the debt in full, she can turn to her child and ask for something. What is it? Practice! Does the child’s practice pay the piano teacher? No. Does the child’s practice repay Mom for paying the piano teacher? No. Practicing is how the child shows appreciation for Mom’s incredible gift. It is how he takes advantage of the amazing opportunity Mom is giving him to live his life at a higher level. Mom’s joy is found not in getting repaid but in seeing her gift used-seeing her child improve. And so she continues to call for practice, practice, practice.
If the child sees Mom’s requirement of practice as being too overbearing (“Gosh, Mom, why do I need to practice? None of the other kids have to practice! I’m just going to be a professional baseball player anyway!”), perhaps it is because he doesn’t yet see with mom’s eyes. He doesn’t see how much better his life could be if he would choose to live on a higher plane.
In the same way, because Jesus has paid justice, He can now turn to us and say, “Follow me” (Matthew 4:19), “Keep my commandments” (John 14:15). If we see His requirements as being way too much to ask (“Gosh! None of the other Christians have to pay tithing! None of the other Christians have to go on missions, serve in callings, and do temple work!”), maybe it is because we do not yet see through Christ’s eyes. We have not yet comprehended what He is trying to make of us.
Elder Bruce C. Hafen has written, “The great Mediator asks for our repentance not because we must ‘repay’ him in exchange for his paying our debt to justice, but because repentance initiates a developmental process that, with the Savior’s help, leads us along the path to a saintly character” (The Broken Heart [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1989], 149; emphasis in original).
Elder Dallin H. Oaks has said, referring to President Spencer W. Kimball’s explanation, “The repenting sinner must suffer for his sins, but this suffering has a different purpose than punishment or payment. Its purpose is change” (The Lord’s Way [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1991], 223; emphasis in original). Let’s put that in terms of our analogy: The child must practice the piano, but this practice has a different purpose than punishment or payment. Its purpose is change.
I have born-again Christian friends who say to me, “You Mormons are trying to earn your way to heaven.”
I say, “No, we are not earning heaven. We are learning heaven. We are preparing for it (see D&C 78:7). We are practicing for it.”
They ask me, “Have you been saved by grace?”
I answer, “Yes. Absolutely, totally, completely, thankfully-yes!”
Then I ask them a question that perhaps they have not fully considered: “Have you been changed by grace?” They are so excited about being saved that maybe they are not thinking enough about what comes next. They are so happy the debt is paid that they may not have considered why the debt existed in the first place. Latter-day Saints know not only what Jesus has saved us from but also what He has saved us for. As my friend Brett Sanders puts it, “A life impacted by grace eventually begins to look like Christ’s life.” As my friend Omar Canals puts it, “While many Christians view Christ’s suffering as only a huge favor He did for us, Latter-day Saints also recognize it as a huge investment He made in us.” As Moroni puts it, grace isn’t just about being saved. It is also about becoming like the Savior (see Moroni 7:48).
The miracle of the Atonement is not just that we can live after we die but that we can live more abundantly (see John 10:10). The miracle of the Atonement is not just that we can be cleansed and consoled but that we can be transformed (see Romans 8). Scriptures make it clear that no unclean thing can dwell with God (see Alma 40:26), but, brothers and sisters, no unchanged thing will even want to." - Brad Wilcox

I keep coming back to this. For all my god given gifts, talents and strengths i consider myself to be weak a lot of the time. There are so many things i need to work on. And for some of those things it feels like i try and try and just can never improve. I want to be free of some of my struggles. I feel like i cant drop them no matter how much effort i put into them. This talk helps me to remember that god still loves me and that i need to keep practicing and learning.

Well, you reacieved this kind of counseling at 63.. Whats age have to do with it? Gods grace doesn’t expire when you turn 20. He blesses you with it for a lifetime here on earth and for all etirnity. I was 35 when I came back to church. best decision in my life!! It took me so long to come back because I didn’t understand grace either. It took me going to church for a year straight before I finally got up the courage to talk to my Bishop ( theres no rush on that either). 2 months after talking to the Bishop, I was in the temple getting my own endowments. I cry just about every day for two reasons. One being, I can feel my saviors love surrounding me almost always. And two, thinking of all that time I missed out on feeling my saviors love. If I can find my way back to church then anyone can. You got this brother! You wont regret it. Thats a promise! good luck. Im rooting for you!! 🙏

This talk has literally changed my life for the best since my wife showed it to me a year ago. Grace is finished. We can either find the humility to accept it through following commandments and holding the Saviors hand through it all or we can reject it by persuing our own pride and depending soley on our own intelect. Sincerest love to anyone in the pursuit of accepting grace.

I’m so sorry for your loss and I know that God hears your prayers and he loves his children no matter how much we miss the mark…. I believe this life IS pure hell on earth without the love and hope of Jesus Christ. I thank God for sending his son to die for us all at the young age of 33. God could only do this with the most love because he designed us like himself, as spiritual beings to have a temporary human experience and find love and meaning in all the suffering on earth …. but most of his children fall short and that is why I believe god sent his only son to save us from the darkness of human suffering or a life without the love of Jesus. I believe God has her precious heart and she’s no longer suffering but comforted by his unconditional love 💕 Bless you my sister in Christ!🙏

Let me be direct and clear. The answers to the questions “Am I good enough?” and “Will I make it?” are “Yes! You are going to be good enough” and “Yes, you are going to make it as long as you keep repenting and do not rationalize or rebel.” The God of heaven is not a heartless referee looking for any excuse to throw us out of the game. He is our perfectly loving Father, who yearns more than anything else to have all of His children come back home and live with Him as families forever. He truly gave His Only Begotten Son that we might not perish but have everlasting life . . . I love the way President Gordon B. Hinckley used to teach this principle. I heard him say on several occasions, “Brothers and sisters, all the Lord expects of us is to try, but you have to really try!” -- Elder J. Devn Cornish of the Seventy -- General Conference October 2016

Grace is a free gift. You just have to have faith in Christ to receive it. you dont need to do ANYTHING to get salvation or grace. (Ephesians 2:8-9). The works are just supposed to be an ensign to the world that you have been converted to Christ.

I wasnt to sure about going to it but im sure glad I did. :) His talk was so engaging and not for a second was boring. If I had the opportunity to go to listen to the same exact talk he gave I would in a heart beat!

Brother, your talk today, has inspired me, as a woman, who will practice Grace. To feel, understand and know that God loves each of us. No matter what. How we show our love to him, in simple acts of intention. To exercise our spirit testimony. I find Grace is the answer. God is the answer. May the power of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, Gods grace be with you. Each and every moment. I realize it’s much easier to be loyal. Living, in , the teachings of Jesus Christ. Of the lords plan . He makes no mistakes, We only need to practice…. I love this thought. 🙏🏼🌍

There is a phrase I found somewhere else which helped me immensely. I don't remember who said it, or the exact wording but it is this: "Sanctification is a process, not an event". You set your course, and if a wind comes along and blows you off course, you just swing around and resume from where you are. That is key: Christ will take you, wherever you are, and whatever you've done. He will do it over and over again. However don't expect to stay the same if you take up his name. He will mold you to be like him, eventually.

I am a father of four and sometimes I feel the same though they are great kids. I hope that after all something has entered their hearts, most probably not the words but the unspoken messages When I feel angry about something they do, even to me, I have to remind myself that this anger would only push them away from me and perhaps even from the gospel. I rather try to understand why they behave like that and give them more love. Jesus helps me by his example: perfect love in spite of standing up for the truth.

Hearing this talk 2 years ago made ALL THE DIFFERENCE for me. As I have shared this with so many I have reminded them, "We always teach that this is a gospel of hope." For so many adults and youth this talk (and Elder Cardon's, 4/13 Conference) is the very hope we look for every day. Today we hope, tomorrow we believe and someday we know (Elder Holland, 4/13 Conference). Hold onto the hope that this talk gives!

Years ago..i member of the Baptist church near Pacita San Pedro Laguna Philippines..approachedme and asked...have you been saved Brother? I learned latter that they have this 3 foot rule..To ask anyone and everyone this golden question as they come in contact with them within 3 feet...i wish i could be as valiant as they are proclaiming to the world not only salvation by grace but the fullness of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Im grateful i stumbled upon this video on youtube and hope and pray that i can share it to Archie Robles and Edgar Gravoso and Pastor Jeff Pabuaya my friends who are members of the Baptist church. And born again Christian preachers like Stella Tae He Fajardo

I have not cried so suddenly or so intensely while I was listening to a talk except during this one at around 15:45. Bro Wilcox's talk gives me a feeling of hope and comfort that the Lord wants me back, in spite of all my imperfections. It's not like He can't stand my weakness, but rather, He wants a better life for me and wants to do anything He can to help me get there. I'm not sure how to better articulate my thoughts here. I'm glad I got to know Bro Wilcox and have him as my EFY lead guy once.
