After many years studying the Bee Gees I have come to the conclusion that the key to their disco era sound was singing harmony in falsetto. All 3 sing harmony in falsetto. Its unusual and brilliant.

Realize when the bee Gees recorded Main Course it was a straight forward R&B album. They didn’t know anything about disco. Now mind you at this point disco was underground in black and gay clubs and influencing R&B artist so it’s natural. They would be influenced. Also maybe not even realizing it it was an R&B album..

  • @jayeginn5963

The deeper voice is Barry, too. One of the reasons why they never did this song live was because all brothers layered their vocals multiple times in this recording, with the record obviously being Barry's voice, both in his lower as his falsetto register. All brothers (including Andy) could sing falsetto, but Barry had the strongest falsetto and took it to a way other level. After several years, Robin stopped using his falsetto, but you can hear the difference between his and Barry's falsetto because Robin's vibrato was much faster than Barry's. Maurice (pronounced Morris) either sang the deepest or the highest harmony parts in songs. His and Barry's voices sounded most alike, with Maurice's being a little softer and deeper overall.

This is the track where Barry fully and finally realized that his falsetto was solid 100k gold and started putting it up front. This track needed some last minute bits and the producer asked if any of them could do some high falsettos and Barry stepped up. He had used it before, but sparingly. An appetizer. Barry’s voice is undoubtedly great, but so is Robins…there’s a sort of aching to his voice. I also think Amber will really like their earlier stuff “I Started A Joke” and “Massachusetts”.

That deep voice IS Barry! His falsetto is not his normal voice. That really high voice is Maurice's falsetto (pronounced Morris) and Robin. There is a version of this on KZread that has them doing it live where you can see which brother is singing each line.

I am pretty sure that video that shows them singing this is fairly misleading. They don't really show who singing what part. It's a lip sync version or the studio version played over the live cut. It is my impression that both the high falsetto and the low is Barry.

The deeper voice you were asking about was actually Barry and Robin singing in unison rather than harmonizing. That blend sounds like Barry with more resonance added from Robin. They did this often, and you can see it in the official video for 'Fanny' if you watch closely. Another good example of this blend is on How Deep Is Your Love, when you watch the official video you can see Barry and Robin singing together in what sounds like one voice.

I love your Bee Gees reactions and have been watching since the initial hearing of "Too Much Heaven" when Jordan first discovered them and started his journey into their catalog. 4 and a half decades of writing and producing great hits is unmatched anywhere. They truly are a once-in-a-lifetime talent. I do want to point out, though, that Barry;s last name is Gibb--not Gibbs. It's the Gibb Brothers, not Gibbs Brothers. Just thought you'd want to know as such a big fan. And Barry lives in Miami on the coast of Biscayne Bay, in case you're ever headed that way. He's been known to come out and meet fans who occasionally gather at the gate of the driveway entrance which is visible from his home, assuming he's there at the time. His home is located at 5820 N Bay Road Miami Beach, FL 33140. If you don't make it down there you might try sending him a card or writing to him. You two have so much more of the Bee Gees yet to hear. Keep going! You've only just scratched the surface. You'll never run out! You should see them perform as kids! So cute, and already that talented. Anyway, thanks for all the great reactions!
