I think she just complicated it too much. The girlfriend simply wanted to have a cute walk/drive impromptu ice cream date. It's fine, as long as she stays honest and doesn't get upset. Women are highly social beings so these feelings are normal, the catch is that they have to learn give-and-take. As each of you discoveres where the other one really is, some give-and-take needs to occur to find the medium place between you where each need is best met. So a woman who's learned these things would say, "Actually I thought it might be nice if we both had but I don't feel like having one on my own." - exactly the same but the need is shared. If he says ok I'll share one she can assume he's happy to do that, needs met; or be reluctant to push him into it and say "But I don't want you to be obliged to have one just for me" and then he can say "I'd still enjoy it, let's go". Of course very few women can learn the art of logical openness easily because their emotions can cloud their thinking and they easily jump to conclusion and get hurt. But you won't find one without these red flags to SOME degree.

It's more about willingness to control the partner mentally: "I know you're only doing this because I want it, not because you want it. That makes me feel bad. Now, you have to want to do it somehow". So not only forcing you to do what you don't want, but make you guess beforehand that she wants it and make you suggest it and pretend to enjoy it.

Sometimes it doesn't just mean "I don't want to make a bid deal out of it, it's fine enough". Sometimes people are not really aware how they feel in real time or or they don't want to be a burden and just suck everything up. Applies to all people, nothing gender specific about it.

The way the interpreter speaks is the best context for an Australian Accent.

I get that you would want to both be enjoying something and not feeling like you're making your partner do something they don't want to do just to make you happy, but you have to be an adult about these things and accept that both of your interests aren't going to line up all the time.

He didn't want her to do something she didn't want just to make him happy too and he's not catching flak for it, right? They prefer different activities, sure, but there's no double standard or forced consent going on here. Except instead of arguing for their own interests each is considering for the others as well. The obvious conclusion is that they will compromise on something both want, if this were realistic - until he kinda shut down with I'm fine, which wasn't translated as part of the joke. But you're putting way too much weight on the ice cream to begin with. You really think the ice cream was the important part of her proposal? The eating part wasn't what would have made her happy about going for ice cream. You get extra points if you can guess what she *did* want to do.
