Hippocratic Musings

Hippocratic medicine was an application of the new physics to human health after the Presocratic demythologizing of nature. The observation based technology offered by the Hippocratic school was a revolutionary improvement on medical practice of earlier magicians and witchdoctors.

Hello from Athens, Dr. Sugrue. Overlooking the Acropolis now and thinking of you, as Socrates was making his way before being arrested. Of course, they thought they arrested Socrates, but the irony being, he ultimately "arrested" his arrestors. Be well, sir. And Merry Christmas.

I love it how he quotes Hippocrates without taking credit for it- " Art is long and life is short". What a genious is Michael Sugrue

Mike, my daughter is 8. I'll make sure that one day she sees this video and many more, and knows the context and why you made it. I appreciate you still sharing your talents with us despite your health and the state of the world. You will be remembered Sir. 🙏

Thank you Dr. for your work, as a formerly disillusioned humanities grad I still gravitate to this sort of deep striking content and really enjoy everything you post here.

The shift in medicine during the enlightenment is interesting. There was something like a separation of science and self. Whereas before, medicine and sickness had to do with culture, religion, superstition perhaps. Then the enlightenment caused a shift in our understanding of medicine and disease. There was a new understanding that medicine, or diseases and the sort, operated apart from those other things. I don't know a lot of history, so to me, that's the "feel" :P. Great videos Professor, you're a legend.... t

(This is off topic but) I used to sit Zen meditation. My teacher used to introduce me to the long term practitioners and tell them I was a philosopher. They would smile and nod. It took me quite a while to realize 8:40 that he was poking fun at me. Zen people try to stop thinking and just experience. I love your lectures. I love philosophy. That's my koan - How does a philosopher experience the dharma?

I think it's very, very interesting that a Hippocratic doctor would not do anything to harm a patient, including abortion. Just something to think about.

Almost like abortion is a moral evil that shouldn’t be taken lightly or be seen as a right.
