30 year old pretty much uneducated ex junkie here I quit watching Netflix and dumb movies I’ve seen a million times i watch sugrue lectures on repeat even if I’ve heard them before . Was never interested in academics but this guy turns history and philosophy into a very accessible, entertaining , and throughly thought provoking experience . Love this guy . Makes me wanna go back to school!!! Thanks Mike!!! Life changing knowledge here

Hell yeah my friend, former cynical idiot here. Look up Slavoj Zizek as well. He is a much more hyperactive and neurotic professor, but his ideas especially regarding psychoanalysis and religion opened up an entire new world. Rick Roderick is also another amazing prof. on here who is very inspiring. To be a totally shameless self-promoter, I made a short super cut of them all on here because of the gift their lectures have given to me. No other way to pay it forward than to spread their gospel of scholasticism.

I'm a philosophy undergrad at a UK university who switched course from Classics. Philosophy took my heart, but I also loved the myths and philosophers most of the Ancient world. I love my course and watching/ listening to Prof. Micheal Sugrue's lecture first thing in the morning with my cup of tea as I get ready for the day, and I make sure to share the vidoes that I think would be interesting and benefit my mother who is an avid listener of many admirable teachers and informers. Thank you for these videos, it gives me a newfound confidence in my lectures to share different ideas of yours and questions of mine that come from them.

Dearest Teacher Michael, what a Glory !... You make me Love what I Know and Know what I Love. Ι don't forget Αισχχύλος who says in "Προμυθεύς Δεσμώτης", that the new Master is rough. Also John Coltrane! A Greek friend, Demetrios Maniates.

Thank you Professor ! Almost like a healthy evolution of the individual. From the adolescent bravado, arrogance and stubborness and after the trials and motions of life we enter our Socratic phase where the ripeness of thought and plurality of experience have made us realize, the best we can hope for to try to understand the world around us, is to ask the right questions.

Dr Sugrue discusses a project and series of lectures to be accompanied by readings through substack at the end of this video. He discusses a sense of revelatory understanding he achieved on Plato's Republic at 20. How can we access these readings? Because it will be my life's aim to uncover the truths that his death left unsaid.

What if the Greeks were correct & Socrates did corrupt the youth, but, instead of Plato & the young aristocrats, he corrupted the young Western civilization with his metaphysics, allegories, & belief in the realm of the Forms?

i dont like the portrait of Achilles although i like your insights very much. i would like for you to think about the 3 heros as the necessary spirits of war peace and management for life. neither Achilles nor Odysseus are fit to rule but both are necessary to take over and understand nature and mankind. Socrates is proposed to be the establishment that builds upon the 2 heros before him. a society that is beyond fighting for survival and that already found the pillars of a cohesive community.
