ABOUT THIS VIDEO
In this video, Matt talks about the top 3 winning strategies for hip pain. Matt spent years with debilitating hip pain, unable to sit for more than a few minutes or to get in and out of the shower without painful snapping and popping in his hips. He's now able to do more than he could when he was a teenager!
Be patient. The process of finding hip exercises that help you get hip pain relief takes time as well as trial and error. Frustration is normal and natural in this process. It doesn't mean that surgery is the only or best answer for hip pain.

Hi Matt I think that there are many people that have got hip arthritis & it would depend on how bad it is! But I think that its encouraging to see you not just being able to do these exercises but also actually showing people what might be of some help:-) Also do you take any specific supplements & follow any diet/nutrition? I watched a lot of you and your partner’s videos and it’s helped my hips so much in only 2 weeks! I felt some relief even after 1 day. I made a library in my phone with screenshots of the exercises and stretches that you guys did from various videos and I added text directions to them. I been doing them daily and I no longer limp when I walk and I have more range of motion! My glutes don’t hurt anymore when I walk and my hips don’t ache when I get out the car. I’ve been doing them religiously everyday and it’s really helped my pain. I’ve also made up some of my own stretches that feel great. I take my time to stretch and do hip mobility and stability exercises. My hips feel so much better than before. I’m a weight lifter and I track every single workout. So I’m very organized with that. And I’m very organized and dedicated to treating this hip pain as well.

Hey Matt, I have been doing some of your recommended exercises for two months. My orthopedic 'hip specialist' told me upon first viewing a new set of xray images six months ago that my right hip joint was degenerative and that hip replacement was inevitable. He then also promptly prescribed 600mg of ibuprofen per day (!!!) to relieve the inflammation in the joint. -- I flat outright refused to take the prescribed dosage and sought out a new doctor and started looking around KZread for other options. You, of course, appeared! Halleluiah. -- I want to say that your videos here have been ABSOLUTELY LIFE CHANGING for me and have given me new vistas into a life beyond pain. Make it a goal, persue it fervently, be patient. I will do this. And like many others who probably don't write a message here, THANK YOU for all your help, insights, inspiration, and hope. -- One last thing. I notice that many of your videos tend to show young people recovering from hip pain but I don't see many seniors here (like me), who, in fact, may suffer the majority of the hip pain problems you are addressing. Can I humbly suggest you start to include videos including this huge group of viewers in your videos? Otherwise many (like me) begin to wonder if the techniques and exercises you advocate for are simply for younger folk. Some of your exercises seem potentially so challenging to me (at age 65) that I don't dare do them (yet). I did one and it caused quite a bit of pain. At any rate, keep on keep on but please be aware not everyone is 20 or 35 or 42 and facing a hip problem. Some of us are 60, 65, 72, or 80 and still seeking relief from hip pain, and our bodies are different. Your kind attention to this matter would be appreciated. Thank you and be well!

Real talk, this video woke me up to the fact that I have been goofing off on the internet a lot lately to 'run' from my hip pain/discouragement in getting no answers with doctors. You called that out in the first 3 minutes. I'm going to write my goals out. Thank you for addressing the full scope of how pain effects us.

Goal: To reduce pain to the point that I am no longer suicidal, to get back into employment and to be able to play sports. I've been out of action for nearly 10 years and I'm still young. I've lost a large chunk of my life to pain. I wish I could come to see you in person to get help with my myriad of physical issues! (I've had FAI surgery and slap tear repair in my shoulder and I'm still in a lot of pain). I have impingement in both shoulders and I've lost nearly all my muscle. I suffer from chronic depression. I've been trying so hard for years but without any proper direction. I've wasted loads of money with various PT's and nothing has helped. I discovered your channel recently and you seem a lot more knowledgeable than many of the so called experts I've paid in the past.

I was running about 40k a week when I suddenly got hip pain, my doctor said it’s arthritis take ibuprofen until you need opioids. I quit running. Did nothing for a couple months. Hated it. I thought well maybe at least i can walk. But after I found your videos and started doing different exercises and stretches the pain started diminishing. I still have some vague pain but nothing like is used to be and I’m averaging 26k a week running again :😊

I've always been super fit and active. Last spring, three days of skate-skiing with my tight, cyclists' hips, resulted in not only a groin pull, but a diagnosis of arthritis in my left hip, plus some tendinopathy in the front of the same hip. I'm 58, and I'm furious. Arthritis is bullshit, so I'm watching your videos and trying to move ahead. I did not cycle all summer, except for a few gentle outings, but I am going to find a way through this. Not only do I want...NEED, to get back on my bike, I also want to get back into the snow when it comes. I might not skate-ski, because I'm not a fool, but I do want to hit some back country slopes again. I really appreciate your videos. Seriously inspiring!

Really appreciate and need your enthusiasm on fix of hip pain. I'm new to this. Ortho doc says maybe some mild arthritis, but thinks problem is tendon / muscle. I'm a senior who gets very sore sitting. Two months ago developed jab pain deep in hip / butt walking and sleeping on side, sometimes pretty good. I do an hour fitness class twice a week with stretch, range of motion, strength and balance. Some issues knee lifts up and sideways. Daily walks fairly aerobic, up and down inclines outside. Surprised that my hip feels like, as you say, rotting from the inside out. PT has begun, but you are my on-line guide as I progress. YOU GIVE HOPE. So thanks! Will explore more of your videos.

Hi Matt. I am aged 84, and suffered a stroke 15 years ago which totally disabled my right leg for a few days. After recovery my right hip seems to have been deteriorating and I have developed osteoarthritis and cartilage loss in my right hip. With Glute stretching I can almost eliminate pain but climbing stairs remains a serious problem to me. There seems to be some wasting of the TFL on the painful side. My primary goal is to avoid hip surgery. I like your philosophy of goal setting and am trying to attain my personal goals of no surgery and climbing stairs.

This video is full of great information. Makes me feel like there’s still hope for me to get out of the pain that I’ve been in for the last 5 months. I’ve tried what my doctor suggested which was the “you have to rest the hip so it can heal” process. That is not working. I have been doing yoga for 20 years and have kept up with it but I feel there are certain moves that are not helping and now my yoga is getting more difficult. I will continue to do exercises that are recommended in your videos and I feel confident that I’m moving in the right direction. Thanks!

I do like your videos and have been to get my hips back .In 2011 a orthopedic doc diagnosed me with endstage osteoarthritis in my right hip he recommended hip replacement my pain at the time was very high and debilitating .I almost did the surgery but i was in a room waiting for a prescription when overheard the doc talking a colleague .he said "theirs my hawaiian vacation"i did not get the operation .I just had to live with the pain after awhile the r hip felt okay now my left hip same thing very painful do anything like bending over ,walking just getting stuff done .i did have an online capability until 2017 which opened up a whole new world for me .I have using the DIY videos online and yours are very good .I have been trying to get my core back for yrs but having difficulty setbacks etc... ,now my left knee and hip are super painful my inner thighs will not loosen up so I can walk evenly .finding a good doctor or therapist in las vegas is not easy .are their any like minded medical practitioners that are in vegas . I like your diy vids and have applied the exercises that i can do but i make proggress and sometimes reggress i am 60 yrs old and have a strong upper body and wish i never listened to the docs advice to get plenty of bedrest that most people i know seem to think heals not true only lets things get worse .thank you. for your DIY vids and sorry about the long winded statement.

Getting into Muay Thai and jiu jitsu was one of the funnest things I’ve ever done and felt like it was one of the best ways I’ve ever felt about my body and even more importantly my mental health. Unfortunately I had to stop both due to my FAI. Kept getting injured and was unable to train :/ would love to eventually get back to that. I feel like my life’s been put on pause because of this. Hard to find work also because most of the time it’s hard to walk.

Thank you for some hope in a scary time for me. I want to get back to doing the things I like with my body for exercise. I want to do body weight, core, pull ups, push ups (have a partial rotator cuff tear too), basketball, cycling and more. I also want to sit and walk and not being in pain in my hip. That termite example is spot on. I don’t know what helps my hip feel better. I definitely am compensating. My hip doesn’t feel great after hiit core or leg things. You are the best therapist I've ever known! Both physio and mental! But several years... Sounds depressing though. Especially for someone like me. I've been diagnosed with tetany and fibromyalgia to follow. I'm constantly out of power, feeling exausted and in pain most of the time all over my body but my main issues for now are my neck and right hip. And it is soooo hard to be consistent with exercises having no energy and being in pain most of the time. Also because of the tetany I have to be really carefull with tissue work as it worsen things up and make my muscles aching and cramping even more. And too much exercises makes me feel more pain as well. Neverless I've already gained some improvement thanks to your excellent job! And actually was able to self diagnose what's wrong with my hip (symptoms were so weird that 7 different doctors coudn't figured them out and thought it may be my appendix). I've also discovered having APT thanks to your videos.

@@netmouse1 Of course. Absolutely but you have to find a good person to work with you.. Easier said than done. They want PRETTY people or people w money. Etc. It takes cooperation.... Medically I've been covered... True there were other factors that may have held me back in recent years. But who wants beg plead and argue. I lost a lot of what would have been functional time. And much more because a physical therapist wouldn't put in for an extension. She also hurt me.. But the exercise physiologist made up for it. She was wonderful. Made up for lack of equipment. I would not be in this situation today had they put in for extention which I am entitled too. I was really hurt by this. Probably would have found an new apt and moved from here too had the PT continued.and not have been so sick over the past couple of years. Yes I got sick.and that really was a set back.... They don't let you get fit or healed. In too many cases.

I like to experiment with monthly strength, flexibility, diet-type challenges. I am 16 years old and I damaged my hip in a wrestling tournament. We did not want to get an MRI because of the high cost, but after an x-ray, we decided to go with PT first, and wait to see if it would heal. Some symptoms healed a couple months after the injury event, but now, six months later, I am still injured. I can walk, bend, and lift my leg, but running flares it up, and sometimes after sitting or laying it becomes highly sensitive and hard to walk on. It can also be hard to lift my leg from a sitting or lying position. I can't lift weights, and today attempted to squat, only to seriously aggravate it more. I have been doing every PT exercise I can find and nothing has helped but this brings me some hope. I want to be able to squat, deadlift, participate in Jiu-Jitsu, run, jump, and perform other movements without pain.

I do drive locally so I’m in and out of my truck.. been to two different orthopedic drs one said arthritis (I’m a young 50 flexible, pretty strong accept legs/hips) the other dr said no arthritis, that I have a torn labrum. But couldn’t find the tear on the scan while showing me..?!?! Thank God I found your channel!! I have been looking at all you have for hip recovery but there is a lot and I’m a bit overwhelmed.. I’m thinking about your parachute program?? Costs/time allotment to do this ..(I work a lot). Could you please steer me to a beginning point as far as where I should start with your system ( ie videos/exercises) I would be forever in your debt! Thank you again for your help! Totally useful! I've suffered from what I believe is a labral tear for nearly three years now--and everything has gone downhill. I can sit cross-legged on the floor without issue, but can't get down or up with the ease I once had. Think I also have snapping hip syndrome. Doing these exercise was painful, but I did them despite the grinding, popping, crunchy sounds has I did exterior rotations. REALLY want to get back into shape, but worry about aggravating this further. How many times/day (or week) should I do these exercises? I'm trusting the process....

Thanks for this video! I've suddenly got hip pain...I thought I was sleeping funny. However, now I'm wondering if it's because I've been going barefoot almost exclusively for the last couple weeks. We are having a HIGHLY UNUSUAL heat wave so indoors I've been going barefoot (and even sometimes briefly when I take the dog out) but my place is ground level, with ceramic tile on concrete. Does that sound like a possible contributing factor? I'm not *unused* to going barefoot, but I've never done it this long. For what it's worth, I often wear Xero sandals but haven't worn them for a while.

In the last 2 years hip labral tear surgeries have sky rocketed. I remember only seeing a few hashtags in instagram, a few groups and not too many posts on facebook, and a few blogs in runners websites, and maybe 5 people on KZread vlogging their recovery. I read the articles on ncbi about being asymptomatic and PT vs surgery outcomes being the same. It's crazy how much low back pain mimics hip pain, I have tears in both my hips and fai. I was in such bad shape, but I was also suffering from a low back strain at the time my MRI's on my hips were done, so how long did I really have those tears and were they the source of my pain? and now that my back has almost made a full recovery so has my hip pain...I see so many people worse after hip labral repair and fai resurfacing they need 2nd revisions, 3rd revisions, they end up with blood clots and nerve damage, re tears, hip dysplasia, hip replacement, its ridiculous and nobody is questioning the orthopedic surgeons why they are butchering people's hips. This is still a fairly new surgery and there is no long term data on it but I can tell from all the groups and posting on facebook that the majority of people end up fucked up even more
