This song actually saved my life. I can actually remember the exact details of the day when I first heard this song. I was in sixth grade, my English teacher Miss Lake was playing it quietly while we all were in study hall. I came up to her after class, asked what the album was that this was on. She handed me a burned copy she was going to give to her fiance and said she could always get another one. I played it until it couldn't play anymore on my walkman, from start to finish, and this song in particular, over and over. I even bought myself two real copies and wore them down too. But it was this CD, and this song specifically, that made me feel like I wasn't alone in the world. I understood the pain they sang about. It's been like 10+ years since I listened to it, but I still have every word memorized, every sound. I wouldn't be here if I hadn't heard this song on that rainy Friday afternoon in my small middle school in Minnesota studying. While it wasn't just this song I played until my CDs were unusable, it was this song that started the beginning of a new life for me. I don't know where you are today, Miss Lake, or where your life has taken you. I know you'll never see this message, you'll never know what a crazy impact you've had on my life and I'm sure you won't even remember who I am. I've always tried to pay it forward, and I've succeeded, staying up sometimes until 6 in the morning with people considering suicide to make sure that I can give them the same feeling of belonging that you gave me so many years ago.

@@luclenoir4119 Much better now! Once in a while I get down into a hole but I've made many amazing friends over the years (many of whom struggle with my same or similar problems) and they help dig me out of it. Specifically, there's a lady that has become like a little sister to me that I met about two years ago. Her brother committed suicide years ago, and as a result her metal band has a hard anti-suicide message. They give out free stuff with the 988 Suicide Prevention hotline logo. They recently just released their first EP and did a music video for a song that was specifically written about her brother called Hope. Most of the other members also have either almost done it themselves or know someone that has tried or succeeded. Kinda reminds me of the song Life is Beautiful by Sixx:AM. Not that I ever did heroin like he did, but just, you don't realize how beautiful life is or the opportunities you miss out on when you're that close to the edge, but once you hit rock bottom and start making changes to get better, you really see the forest through the trees that depression blinds you to.

From the lyrics, it seems that this song isn't about depression - not as most people know it. This song is about when you have felt so much pain that there is nothing left. You remember what it was like to feel happy, and to feel sad, but you don't feel that anymore. You don't feel anything anymore, except a longing to be able to feel anything other than numb.

This song has always had a special place in my heart. I was 17 when it came out and it still hits hard 17 years later. It really showcases something that anyone with depression and/or anxiety battles with on a daily basis. That desire to be better, to be normal, to move forward, to be able to maintain healthy relationships and to move about in society with confidence and yet always finding yourself falling back into the same cycles of doubt and negativity. Feeling hollow and alone and blaming yourself for your inability to function like a normal human being. Linkin Park, and Chester specifically, had such a gift for turning these feelings into profound lyrics and cathartic songs and it’s so sad to know that we will never have that perfect combination again. LP is iconic and truly one of a kind. Miss you Chester.

My mom loves this song!! Funny fact: the "swipping" intro was actually written by Chester Bennington while he was playing some weird stuff on the acoustic guitar, then Mike Shinoda has sampled it, reverse it, and "cut" it (like into 4 pieces). Funny fact #2: That was their first single recorded with the bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell.

Also, I love how multi-functional Mike is. He raps, of course, but you'll also see him on guitar and keyboard and later on in the band's career he even takes the lead in some of the singing to give a different effect than Chester does. ^_^

"Somewhere I Belong" was always a special one for me. But then again they have a ton of songs that are special for me. But I agree, whenever I revisit these albums, everytime I can't help but sit back and think, "Goddamn, these guys know how to write a song" lol The first two, three albums in particular are just a bunch of perfect songs. It's insane how talented this whole band really is 👍👌
