Tom Scholz is a musical savant. He wrote this album in his basement, played all the instruments, and actually invented equipment (which is still used today) so he could create the music as he heard it in his head. The band came afterwards and the blending of Tom's genius and Brad Delp's voice created the best debut album of all time and one of the best bands of all time. "Don't Look Back" is another corker! Keep up the great work MollyBoy

Boston was the first band I ever saw in concert. It was the fall of 1978 and three college buddies and I drove 70 miles to see them. Sammy Hagar (known as "The Red Rocker" at the time) warmed up for them. Then there was a brief intermission as they changed out the stage and then Boston opened with "Rock And Roll Band" which is a story about the band's history. It was a great concert. In addition to that song, "Smokin'" is also a must.

Our young friend…. Imagine! You’re in an outdoor arena, with tens of thousands of people. The lights flicker and the crowd rises to their feet. The lights go down and a hush goes over the crowd. Suddenly the smoke shoots from under the stage. The crowd cheers! Then bright blinding lights start flashing as that spaceship on the album cover slowly lowers from the ceiling above the stage. The Foreplay begins. Tom Scholz on organ, drums, bass. Tom on lead guitarist is playing the organ with his guitar on his back. After the organ he flips the guitar around to play. Crowd on their feet. The Long Time begins, vocals by the incredible Brad Delp. It’s was the best show concert! Pyrotechnics, confetti bombs, lasers! That spaceship. Breathtaking. The first album titled BOSTON dropped in 1976. Every song on that album is a hit. Start there. Every song. Last time I saw them play together was in early 2000s. Same intensity, same show. In 2007, Brad Delp committed suicide, at age 55, by carbon monoxide poisoning, leaving a note …. “I am a lonely soul”. Such a talented man, broke my heart. Then On March 22, 2017, at age 67, drummer Sib Hashian died of a heart attack after collapsing in the middle of a set while performing on board a cruise ship. Others have joined but it’s not the same. I just wanted you to know what a live show feels like. I loved concerts since high school in the 1970s.

One of the group, Schultz I think, invented a suite of recording technologies after graduating MIT. He mixed this on his own basement to try to sell the gear, but the recording company was more interested in the music he created. Voila! Boston was born.

But unbeknownst to the record company, the entire album was done in Tom’s basement. They “pretended” to re-record the album in the studio. 😂

They played the shit out this song on every rock station for more than a decade. It startling for you to hear so many instruments and voices because modern stuff, for the most part, is ALL synth with some vocals. Old music was hard work and expensive to record but absolutely brilliant.

The story as I heard it: Some buddies attending MIT together decided they could produce music better on their own than a professional studio could. So they made their own studio in a basement and started recording on the equipment they created. This was the album they made. I love the revival of a mechanical organ being used. Pretty sure that electric guitar being used inspired the word “rad” commonly used in the 80’s.

Many thanks to my uncle, rest in peace, for making sure I had my own 8-track of this album when I was a little 70s kid with a bowl cut. This album is line one of the source code of my musical DNA, and I have him to thank for it. And I've got to say, seeing you visibly drift away to this song and knowing *exactly how awesome it sounds* through a pair of good headphones - it made an old man a little misty. The kids are alright. ✌️😎

Fun reaction. This first album by Boston is considered to be one of the greatest debut albums in Rock music. I know this is the second one you reacted to, but you could still kind of go through what's left on the album in order. But either way, you owe it to yourself to hear every song on this album ultimately. Boston has a very distinct and recognizable sound, but then again they have such variety in their songs, which all just kick ass in their own way. Good ear catching that organ pattern once it transitioned from Foreplay into Long Time. All the layers in this are fantastic, and Fran on the bass is just a monster. Just listen for that sometime. Long Time was on the radio all the time when I was in junior high and I had my first girlfriend. We had the 8-track cassette so we could play it in her car as we were driving around or hanging out at the park or whatever. Great memories. And the FM stations would often play the two of them together. But you definitely heard just this part of it a bunch.😮

IMO, this is right in the breadbasket of classic rock. Irrespective of eras, if I wanted to explain rock to someone, I'd pick this along with "Layla" and a few others, and say, "This is rock music." "More Than A Feeling" is regularly rated as Boston's best song, but they have several hits that ought to be on the playlist.

This was indeed a big radio hit, though usually just the "Long Time" part was played on Top 40 radio stations. However, some radio hits back in the seventies were long and the full combination of these two pieces could occasionally be heard.

Love it! I agree with the comment about this being one of the best debut albums of all time. Not a bad song on it! Tomorrow (25th) is my birthday (57) and would love for you to continue your Stevie Ray Vaughan journey…truly a gifted artist. I say do his cover of Jimi Hendrix Little Wing. Jimi’s version has lyrics, SRV’s is an instrumental, amazing player. React to the Live version, pretty sure it’s the “Live at El Mocombo” version. Keep up the great musical education. Gen X’ers we’re blessed with the best music! Enjoy!
