46 and 2 is the evolution of mankind in referance to the amount of chromosones. The part about the shadow is a Jungian construct to do with the self realisation. The song is about moving from what you are into a new being of enlightenment

totally disagree. yes, lyrics are very important to a TOOL song understanding, but listen through it with out lyrics so you can extract the emotional response the music creates for you. learn the time changes and your personal response to the musical drifts. then add to all that the lyrical meaning so you can add the meaning to your already built emotional understanding of the music. ive found that an early look into the lyrics hampers the emotional extraction of the music.feeling

@@egratudo1974 I think any tool fan understands the music is a important part of the art, but for a first time listener, I still think that it's better to see the lyrics while still hearing the music. I think it is easier to cope with and brings a sense of the atmosphere they are trying to create. And as we all know it can be a little difficult at times to hear some of the lyrics but lyric videos allow the listener to not have to strain to hear the lyrics at the same time be able to enjoy the music. I hope you two are ready for a journey because Tool never disappoints! You're interpretation is interesting, I hadn't heard one like it for this song before and you definitely have the right idea. As many have stated already, the general consensus is that it's about evolving into and becoming a better person and uses chromosomes and Jungian theory as an analogy but seeing it as a middle aged person reflecting on their life choices and wanting to do better works just as well. Tool is a different kind of band, there just isn't anyone like them and I really hope that you continue to check them out. They fall under the "Progressive Rock" category and make use of a lot of odd time signatures, polyrhythms, jazz influenced and tribal styles of drumming and cryptic lyrics in most of their work. Some really good second reaction choices would be "Lateralus", "Aenima" or "Parabol" & "Parabola" (listened to together...trust me). Cheers!

This song is about evolution. It's about aknowledging and confronting your "darkside" (the Shadow which is a Jungian concept). And it uses references to genetics. 46 is the number of chromosomes in a human cell, organised in pairs... so to change and evolve you have to add another pair (at least metaphorically), hence "forty-six & 2". It's a very deep song like most Tool songs. Also... I've seen many people react to this song and they're always puzzled about the title... Not to brag, but I remember buying this album back in the day and hearing this song for the first time and once I heard it I thought "oh 46 like the number of chromosomes"... And I'm no science guy.

The beautiful thing about tool is that a majority of their songs are very profound and often left to the listeners interpretation. Definitely need to watch the lyric videos and such to truly grasp the meaning to the songs as Maynard James Keenan (lead singer) intended. Not sure you guys are ready for the very profound nature of Lateralus so I'd recommend Aenima or perhaps Vicarious as they are for the most part relatively easy to understand lyrically 🤙

Someone mentioned the meaning of Forty Six and Two having to do with chromosomes. Humans currently have 22 chromosomes known as Autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes X and Y. The behind the numbers is the hope that by evolving as human beings the natural progression of life is that by attaining 2 more chromosomes we would evolve into being better people, I believe Maynard is speaking metaphorically as he almost always does, but he does hope that the human race sees the error of our ways and improve ourselves or we are all doomed.

I didn’t read comments to see if someone pointed it out but Tool sometimes is hard to hear the lyrics but it’s because we’re used to how other bands are. When they mix their sound they usually have vocals at a higher volume so you can focus on the lyrics. Maynard doesn’t care too much about people focusing on him. They intend to have vocals low to show and play that all members and instruments are just as important as each other. Tool has great lyrics but Tool has always been about enjoying the music as a whole.

subscribing for tool reactions.... i recommend the song pushit from the same album,, studio version,,,.. then the infamous salival version,,, must have to read lyrics while listening. All their songs are journey,, but pushit is a beautful, tragic and powerful journey
