Hinge Cutting and Girdling Trees to Improve Your Habitat - The Management Advantage

Спорт

When it comes to TSI, a tree can be your best friend and your worst enemy. Knowing your goal will determine which species falls where. In Tom's case, Beech trees are abundant on his farm and are blocking sunlight from hitting the forest floor. With a little chainsaw work he was able to improve the farm in a couple different ways. First, by hinge cutting he's leaving the tree top at deer level which provides great screening and cover. Secondly, it's opening up the canopy to allow more sun to hit the forest floor. For larger trees, girdling provides a safe, effective method to kill the undesirable trees. While it won't provide wildlife with food, it will still open up the canopy.
Timber stand improvement isn't a one size fit all project. You need to identify your goals and priorities. Find the end result you have in mind, create a plan, and put it in action.

This really works. My woods look just like yours. I henge and girdled a swath of beach and maple along a ridge on 200 acres down middle that use to be open big timber. Not good for holding mature deer , but now it invites bucks. Allowing the light in is what did it. I also planted switch grass in areas where canopy was open more even increasing the bedding and security mature bucks want.

Great video, Thankyou! my deer property is 80% Maple, 10% Beach so I learned a lot and now have something to do next time I'm there.

If it's possible, fire is your best and most cost effective tool. Maple and beach have thin bark and will die quickly too a good fire. Oak is a fire reliant species. It will also open up your stand and clear out brush/weeds/thickets and germinate beautiful and vigorous Forbes and grasses.

Thanks! I like the way you did the before and after as it made a lot more sense. I'd love to see a photo of how you plan to set up your stands and any plots you plan to work in there or is it simply going to be more of a funnel that also offers a nice place for the deer to bed down?

I'm going to girdle the trees that are blocking the view of the Blue Ridge Mountains from my sink windows. These trees that you snap in half, they won't continue to grow? Thanks for the video!

I’d be a little worried that I won’t get rid of the beech tree by hinge cutting. Hack n squirt?

best way is to hinge cut waist high. stumps provide stem count too like the trunk. therefore cover and food for the deer waist high the whole way down the tree

I think you'll find that without hack and squirt on those beech your wasting your time. Even if you cut it down it will send sprouts out 2 to 1.

You can cut those Trees at an upward 45 degree angle and take out half the work, work your way up from small to large , till you get the hang of it. Great Video.

girdling beech doesnt kill it. more than likely the roots will shoot up stump sprouts creating more trees...more work for you. in my opinion with beech trees, i would "hack and squirt" or "drill and fill" with glypho. beech is a nuisance, the more you cut or damage the more root sprouts will grow. you're just gonna create more of a beech thicket now. check out forest connects channel, they have a lot of info on beech and beech bark disease. Good luck!!!

Why would you kill a huge mast producing tree like the one you girdled? I get killing the small and medium ones but to kill a huge one makes no sense to me.

It's makes a mess. If you have a large stand of trees that you want to terminate, dropping them would create such a mess that deer wouldn't be able to move through the area. If you kill them standing they won't leaf out, which let's sunlight down to the Forrest floor and the trees will deteriorate over time.

One negative aspect is fire. I live in timber country. If a fire breaks out, how will the responders access the fire? They drive tank trucks, my neighbors are first responders. I've gone on calls with them to fight hundreds of acres of forest fires. The main thing, access nearest the source to reduce fire spreading.

Not a hinge cutting fan especially for beech trees. I want them dead and lying on the ground rotting. I own 150 acres of woods in Northern Parke Co indiana and have no shortage of beech along with invasive species that require a great amount of time to control.

  • @bradfinegan3381
    @bradfinegan33816 жыл бұрын

I wouldn't girdle. You're creating a safety hazard over time. Hack and squirt is a better method and you will kill adjacent trees that share the same root system. Hack and squirt is deadly on beech.
