Hinge Cut/Swamp Bedding Area - 1 Year Later

Ойын-сауық

March 2020 I began creating a long, narrow "L" shape hinge cut bedding area along my swamp transition line. 1 year later this area is full of beds, both in and around the hinge cuts. In this video, I wanted to take you all through my bedding area and show you examples of where deer are bedding (and where deer are not). I always like seeing examples of actual deer beds, so I can both learn and hopefully duplicate similar areas on my property. I hope the examples in this video help you do the same!

I think that 2 year old spot your gut and mind are right where I'd be. Along that big downed tree, id be clearing saplings and even considering spraying or at minimum raking once out and they'll choose it if they want. The hinging added a structure to your property which didn't exist prior and you're seeing first hand the power of it. So happy for it man! Cannot wait to continue following and hopefully this spring or summer even chatting on the podcast about it.

This video got you a new subscriber. I agree... I wish more habitat people would show more examples of beds and other points of interest.

I’m honestly not sure. It’s not cattails but grows in wet areas

@@draggindeeroutdoors looking to create a similar looking bedding area but I don’t have a ton of native grasses. Lots of fescue and Kentucky bluegrass that shoots up

I would have liked to see the before and after pictures . As I just got done with a spot hoping for not so much for bedding but for food by letting sunlight hit the ground . It was all trees so I had to burn too .

Have you tried red osier in and around these bedding areas to help hold up the grass and give browse? I have a swamp exactly like yours and the red osier exploded the deer bedding.

Yup I have! I've had decent luck planting red osier dogwood cuttings and very good luck planting willow cutting.
