Hiking up OLD RAG Mountain at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (+ sunset on Skyline Drive)

Back in April 2016 we visited our second US national park: Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and hiked Old Rag Mountain, which at the time, was not the most positive experience.
So now that we're back over 5 years later, with a lot more hiking trails under our belt, we're reconquering this beast, plus visiting part of Skyline Drive and seeing an epic sunset!

    That sunset was SO beautiful! Best one we have seen in a while! We were surprised the hike wasn't busier since it's one of the most popular (the parking lots weren't full), but I guess it's because everyone was on Skyline Drive lol! We unintentionally timed our visit when the fall colors started to emerge. We assumed the trees would've been dead!

    Ah, Old Rag Mountain. Love this hike (mostly). The scramble is so fun and has a quite a few unique features and some challenging spots. Great job filming this one as I bet it might have been somewhat tricky. I think you gave a real nice overview of the trail and highlighted what one could expect if they were to attempt it. Excellent work! The last time I did Old Rag was about 2.5 years ago with my oldest son. We started at a tradition that year where I would take a solo camping trip with each of my boys at least once a year. That year we did Old Rag and some of the battlefields in Maryland. He was 12 at the time and rocked it but that endless fire road wore him down. Slog is a great choice of words for it.

I'm originally from Luray, about 10 miles NW from there, and I've climbed the mountain at least 300 times, mostly from the three summers I spent giving guided tours. It was always funny watching little kids handle the toughest parts of the rock scramble better than experienced adult hikers.

    You guys did so well with the filming in the narrow scrambling sections. I adored watching you guys on this hike. Very much up my street with the scrambling and I didn't realise this park was so close to Washington DC. Annoyingly I've visited the city twice, but never made it to the park! Loved the drive too, the autumnal colours were beautiful. We did the same thig in Rocky Mountain, very jet lagged as we'd flown in the night before, we opted to do a scenic drive. The chefs toss at 14:30 was very impressive. My students love to try doing it and it always ends badly! When you were after an adjective at the end... not that you were eating / describing food, but are we allowed to set you guys challenges? In 2022 when eating food, use the adjective 'scrum-diddly-umptious' as though it's a perfectly normal word to use and just keep talking afterwards 🤣 🙌 I look forward to the DC vlog(s?), I love watching your videos when I've been to the places and get to reminisce!

    You would love this hike! It's so much fun and feels like a jungle gym! We did lose one pepper or potato on the toss, but that's not bad, right?! 😜 I was JUST thinking of using that word today when we were finishing up edits to the DC vlog. A bakery we visited had that word on their wall and I was thinking how we need to throw that in sometime. So challenge accepted!

There are pools eroded into the tops of several boulders up top, the one in question is accessible on what is the far side, if approaching from the typical trail to the top. Awesome 360 views. Wildflowers (trilium, geranium, violet, mayapple, anemone, bellwort coming soon, and something couldn't id, looked like pitcher plant, with a stem growing from hole, with cluster of flower buds on top kind of like a queen ann's lace /lantana cross). Thank you for this video and a question (and apologies in advance for the length): my husband and I are also on a quest to do all the NPs but are still very early in that quest. We've been to Acadia 2x and to Great Smokey Mountains. We'll be going to Shenandoah this year in June. Early in our NP research (You Tube is a godsend!), having viewed other videos about Old Rag, I had already put it on the "Above Our Skill Grade" list. However, on our second trip to Acadia, we accidently did the rock scramble side of South Bubble to go up and I am still shocked we made it to the summit! So now as we prep for June and watching this video, suddenly doing OR doesn't seem so hard, LOL! Am I mistaken or at least from what I saw in your video, are there no areas on the OR ascent like that one flat rock face "pull up" point right before you summit SB? Because if so, I think I can actually move OR to the "Want To Try" list -- descending down the easy side of course as we did for SB, LOL!!!

  • @AdventuresofAplusK

    @AdventuresofAplusK

    4 ай бұрын

    Hi! If you conquered the South Bubble then you can do Old Rag. The scrambling parts are fairly similar. You could always get up to Old Rag from the fire road as well. It's much longer and just following a bumpy road through the forest so it isn't as exciting, but no scrambling required there. Hope that helps!
