HIKING AND CAMPING WITH A VIEW | Photography Season Prep

#landscapephotography #wildlifephotography
For the past few weeks, we have been preparing for the coming photography season. A big part of the preparation is hiking with ultralight gear. In photography, there is no such thing as ultralight hiking gear, but the plan is to lighten the load of the backpack and myself. Enjoying the hikes of the summer is the goal.
When I wandered up a mountain with a new backpack and sleeping system for camping it was not my intention to stay for the night. After hiking for 5 km there was no turning back. The weather was great, with no wind, and when I was going to sleep I listened to a concert of ptarmigans, arctic foxes and redwings all around the tent.
This is not our typical video. Taken on a GoPro - and the battery died soon after pitching the tent. Therefore the video ends without a proper end... but it is what it is... an experiment.

The good thing about Gudmann and Gyda, what i like so much, is the way to show the landscape and wildlife of Iceland in all diversity . You can tell the difficulty of making such film of it. But... that's what you are good at!!! There are so many vloggers out there where this video, in this formula is average. I don't like a 'go-pro walking' vlog. To me it is not interesting. But i think/hope this kind of vlog was just for testing. BTW "planning to lighten the backpacking" with a backpack of 12K??? hahaha. I am lookin forward, and hoping you will have a great summer season. It must be very interesting to see summer of Iceland. Keep up the good work please. Paul

Thank you Paul. You are right, this was for testing. The vlog style is not for everyone. Middle-aged men should keep a certain minimum distance when on the wrong side of a camera ;-) The GoPro is great for certain "additional" footage, but we will probably never use it as the main video-camera. Regarding the backpack, I might not have been clear. The usual weight is around 18-22 kg. This backpack was 14,7 with all the camera gear and food for 4 days. My old backpack was over 3 kg empty, this Zpack is about 0,6 kg empty. The tent is 2,7 kg and the tent I have ordered is under 1 kg - so there is room for improvement. The sleeping system is as light as it can get, but the old system was 1 kg heavier.

Gudmann- good to see you trying something new and experimenting with your film making. I do a lot of wild camping with my photographic gear in Scotland and the north of England and agree... the weight/ comfort/ equipment equation is always a challenge. Like you I am not so keen on people walking and talking to camera and prefer the more set up type of filming...gets in the way of the hiking but makes for better quality more interesting content. Good to see the deadpan humour too.

As I mentioned in a previous comment, - middle aged men should keep a minimum distance when on the wrong side of a camera. This vlog style was for testing - I guess we will keep it to the minimum in our videos. Regarding the backpack and weight/comfort limit... a great trip can be ruined by only a few too many kilos. We must remind us that we are in this to enjoy nature and have a great experience.

@@GudmannAndGyda Totally agree...I am moving beyond "middle aged" but the upside is having more time to get into the wilder parts of the UK. Adding to the weight challenge is my desire to be accompanied by my dog: coat (in winter months)/ towel/ food/ bowl/ additional foam mat etc! I too have found carrying a camera and long lens on a backpack clip not to be as practicable as I had hoped...I now tend to clip it via carabiners to the D rings and carry it across my chest. Or just revert to it over the shoulder again. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more of you adventures over the coming months.

There are a few small forests, but in many cases it is very generous to call few trees a forest... :-)

Good day I’m a Canadian photographer love beautiful Rockies, like that would love to camp out like that myself one day I have filmed with a GoPro for years I see nothing wrong with it. Specially, if you’re a beginner, plus it is so much easier and lighter to carry and they actually film and pretty good quality. Granted it is a super wide angle lens and you cannot zoom in on anything but to Vlog yourself I think there’s nothing wrong with it.

Gee how cold was it, despite the seemingly lovely weather. Also how far did you hike altogether. Importantly did the sleeping bag keep you warm enough. Presumably it is rated to a very low temperature ! Cheers, Richard

During the day it was about 4°C, and during the night it was about -1°C. The hike up the mountainside was 5 km - total of 10 km (6,2 miles). It was rather effortless, but great for testing the backpack and the gear. I was never cold during the night. The sleeping bag is rated for -4°C in comfort, I guess it is close to reality, given that I use a good mattress. The mattress is rated R3,9. Best wishes from Iceland.

@@GudmannAndGyda Thanks so much for the details from your trip. I meant to say also that the film clarity and the stabilisation were fabulous. Also nice different angle to show your tent pack up from above. The Ptarmigan was a magical bonus :)
