Hiker Disappears Feet from Partner/Found Dead In River12 hours Later. What really happened?

Hello everyone, today's case takes us to to the Toronto, Canada area. Monday December 23, 2018 on the Crothers Woods Trail near Redway Road, East York, Toronto Canada.
Stella Wong who was only 45 years old at the time and was in great shape and knew all these areas very well. She was hiking with a male friend and disappeared around 7pm. They were hiking together but for some unknown reason they got separated.
Search and rescue was of course sent out immediately , with dogs and drones.. by what they found at 9am the next morning was not only devastating but confusing.
How could Stella have ended up in that body of water? why didn't she make any calls for help?
Her hiking partner was questioned and cleared, but was there someone else there maybe? This whole case is such a baffling mystery.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Stella Wong, her friends and family and everyone who knew and loved her🙏🙏
Something just doesn't add up in this case.
Thank you for watching and please be respectful in the comments if you choose to leave them 🙏

When you said that she parked her car in the same place and basically had a routine she followed when hiking, my thoughts jumped to something my husband told me many years ago. I rode my horse on trails by myself. My husband told me to not go out the same time every ride, or enter the trail the same place, he said that someone could easily observe my "routine" when riding, that someone could potentially stalk me that way and plan when to try something not good. It made me pause and think. So maybe someone saw where she parked every time and other routines, and planned their attack on her that way. I am really sorry for what happened.

I grew up here and for 2 years, this was my backyard. These trails are very heavily used year round. It wouldn't be uncommon for me to take my dog out around midnight, in 6" of snow, and see a pack of "fat bikes" riding through. This park runs through one of the busiest cities in Canada, and while parts of it can be quite secluded, you really aren't more than a few hundred meters from civilization

I've been hiking many places by myself, with a friend and also with small groups. I often become separated because I tend to walk a bit faster and require a lot less resting than the people I'm with. When I notice I've gone too far ahead, I turn around and walk back towards them until they're in sight. I understand this is a bad practice. But it's not quite as far from a possibility as some are treating it to be. I'm sure this a common occurrence and doesn't in any way point towards fowl play.

I kinda liked hiking at night. We would leave after work, drive 3-4yrs and then hike another 3-4hrs! Depending on the moon phase, I’d sit in the dark for about 10-15min after we parked. It would help our eyes adjust. But hiking at night made it seem like we got to camp much faster. It helps though if the trails are well marked!

The deciding factor would be how far from the water on shore they found her body, as they reported it as being near the river, vs something more immediate. On the bank, sure, there's the most plausible scenario. If farther, as was the narrator's implication, and a COD of drowning would include a water related incident that concluded somewhere on land, then yes, still most plausible. Otherwise, it's a problem, and i was left with the impression that being found on shore after having drowned was one of the problematic circumstances, leading me to suspect the companion's possible involvement.

Another great presentation. Although an experienced hiker, it was likely an accidental drowning due to an unfortunate decision. The shocking freezing-cold water and heavy water-laden clothing and boots make survival questionable for even the strongest swimmer. Consider the Eastern Airlines crash in the Everglades many years ago. The plane went down because an expert pilot with decades of flying under his belt was focused on fixing a $3.00 cockpit lightbulb and forgot to fly the plane, not realizing he had accidentally disengaged the auto pilot. His family said he could never have made that mistake, but the black box data proved otherwise. We all use poor judgment at times - I know I have.

I agree with you on the night hiking part....if she was such an accomplished and experienced hike she wouldn't have been out there. This as more likely the sort of thing a couple drinking buddies wood do to share a bottle or some weed. I am in no way suggesting that's what happened I'm just suggesting her experience wasn't as good as she thought and also It's very odd. As far as the temperature that should be an issue you don't need to be an accomplished hiker to understand what is something most Canadian children understand very early on if fact this as not terribly cold. The daytime high today was -10F by suppertimr it was around -22F with a wind chill of -30 and an advisory for -32 through the night but they wind has died off. There are people hiking along the highway out of my town hey all at breakfast and 4pm or so must if them still went anyway.. But a plausible explanation was she was a good hike and knew these woods but not the weather hypothermia creeps up on ya similar to becoming intoxicated and brings odd behavior and poor judgment. This could explain the separation the climbing of a fence and falling into a river and would only serve to cause mire impairment as well loss of strength and very quickly death. This as only speculation but it's plausible

The victim is experienced in the outdoors and is high functioning. The body is found in a body of water, or next to a body of water, with no clear cause of death. The one thing that stands out as not being part of the profile, is that this feels like a case of foul play. The guy that was with her had to be involved somehow.

She wasn’t found in the river I guess the fact that she had no injuries but also one article said they were in a ravine. I don’t know the whole case seems odd and extremely unsettling. I just can’t understand why anyone regardless of the frequency of visits to this place would anyone go out in a forest type area in complete darkness and with below zero temperatures. The fact that police appeared to be tight lipped as to the relationship between the deceased nor any information on who he was and is or his whereabouts other than he was cooperating. You have to be so careful today about where and with whom you go it’s as though you can never really know or trust a person.

Agreed... there is so little info & all of it is contradictory, but what it does suggest to me is that Stella wasn't the type of person to 'get lost' hiking at 7pm in the middle of winter. I watched some of the news coverage as well & things don't add up... could be reporters & police getting wires crossed, but the location of her body was nowhere near the trail she was supposedly last seen on. Not to mention that the trail next to where she was found was so wide that they drove the police & coroner's trucks right down to the location. You couldn't miss it, even if you were stumbling around in the freezing dark. I'm normally one to argue how easily people can get lost in a national park or wilderness, but this was an urban park surrounded on all sides by housing, shops & streets. I don't buy any story that includes "and I turned around & she'd vanished."

@medea27 I agree that person that was with her made no sense to be. Why would you get separated? Why would she walk off from you in that dark park? I agree one article I read said they both were in a ravine and that’s where she was by the searchers. They never went into great detail about the relationship between her and the male companion. Every article I find is very limited. I’m sorry for her family’s pain and lack of true answers as to what happened to her.

Last seen at 7:00 pm on Dec 23. . . that's at least 2 hours after sunset. It would have been very dark, not to mention freezing cold. Maybe she got disoriented in the dark and fell into the river and drowned? Falling into freezing cold water in pitch black night could be very shocking and disorientating. It doesn't take much water in the airway to drown.

If she fell into the water, she could have had a cold water shock. There's a technical name for it, but even the best swimmers get it. It's basically that your body does not respond to normal signals, such as to breathe or how to react because your body is so shocked by the water temperature. Those who go into search and rescue a lot of times have to go through a training where they're actually submerged into cold water quickly. They started that after a case about a transport helicopter crash that happened above really cold water. Only one person survived out of 15 or 16 people on the helicopter. He was someone who had experienced jumping or being submerged into cold water. I forget exactly why he had cold water experience, but he survived because the water didn't shock him as much as the others. Even though the chopper was going down and everybody knew it was about to hit the water, and they tried to prepare, they still could not react, and ended up drowning in a helicopter crash that they could have survived.

Drowning in very cold water is easy. Bryan's puzzlement at why she didn't "just call out" for help after falling into the water suggests he has never fallen into freezing cold water. The immediate result is the "cold shock response" - you involuntarily gasp for air and begin hyperventilating. It is almost impossible to call out while you are in this state, and it tends to promote a panic reaction. Worse still, this makes it much more likely that you will inhale water. Even if you don't take on a lungful of water then, within 10 minutes of immersion, you will suffer "cold incapacitation", losing the ability to get out of the water by yourself.

A lot of tin foil hat detectives in the comments. Suggesting it is not normal to go out at 7pm for a walk in a well known area, that she visits frequently, because it was cold, is reaching at best. We do NOT hibernate in Canada in the winter. There are A LOT of winter enthusiasts who would much rather go for a walk in winter than summer, but I digress... It's a good thing (and obvious) the commenters on here are not detectives/police officers/judges/people of power, otherwise there would be a lot of "suspects" wrongly jailed &/or convicted. Sometimes the most obvious & simplest things are hard to interpret and accept. People in the comments don't want the simple explanation to be true, they want some mysterious evil thing to be the only theory explainable. Conspiracists basically. As for the Male companion she was with, I, without a doubt, presume he would be questioned in some capacity that led investigators to eliminate him as the "first suspect", as one commenter used. PS. I lived in Toronto for 32 years, the city is very much alive and busy at 7pm, even in winter! 😉
