Today we look at two Grandmasters from two influental KZread chess channels. Hikaru Nakamura @GMHikaru and Eric Hansen @chessbrah. Both GM Hikaru and chessbrah have had the Hippopotamus Defense featured on their channel. And, a game between them follows just that. The Hippo Defense is truly one of the most underrated chess openings in the entire game. I myself played many chess openings in tournament chess over the years. These include the Scotch Gambit, Giuoco Piano, Grand Prix Attack, Sicilian Najdorf, Nimzo-Indian Defense, Bogo-Indian Defense, etc. However, it wasn't until I played the Hippo that I earned the CM and NM titles. In this video we explore the chess opening strategy, chess opening moves, chess opening tricks, chess opening principles, and chess opening theory which helped GM Hikaru get a great win against GM Eric Hansen. If you don't play the Hippopotamus Defense, WHAT ARE YOU DOING??
@GMHikaru (GM Hikaru Nakamura) has played the Hippopotamus Defense mutliple times online + against chess computers. Chess engines often have a hard time knowing what to do against the Hippo Defense, because it's so closed and solid. @chessbrah (GM Eric Hansen) has done a Hippopotamus Defense Speedrun series in which case he plays the Hippo at multiple levels. Chess for beginners can be tough, as one is trying to improve at chess, and really start to understand chess principles. There are a ton of chess openings out there, but only so many recommended for begineners. I would say that the beginner chess player should play a chess opening which they like! It is all about you being comfortable in the chess positions you reach, and then from that point you can use chess strategy and chess principles to try and win at chess. GM Eric Hansen does a good job of highlighting the Hippo Defense in his series.
There's so many search-terms on KZread including chess for beginners, chess vibes, chess moves, chess game play, chess grandmaster, chess openings for beginners, chess principles, chess tricks, chess for beginners, chess explained, chess lessons, win at chess, chess, KZread chess, chess vs, and so much more. How do we improve at chess? How do we take our game to the next level? My answer is simple. Focus on two things, those being chess tactics and chess endgames. Chess openings are important, I mean y'all have seen how much energy I've putten into Hippopotamus Defense content! However, in terms of improving ELO - make sure not to skip over tactics and endgames.

That's amazing because GM Hansen did this wonderful Hippo speedrun a long time ago! Always good to see Hippo masters show us how it's done!

That was only about 6 months ago. I watched every game and played through all 233 of them last July and August. In general, I did not find them to be all that instructive, regarding the Hippo. But wow, could he ever find and force checkmate! I was very impressed with that.

@@wormrose01 I'm more impressed at how far GM Hansen got with the Hippo on pure skill. Imagine if he actually specialized in it. That speedrun series is more of a "what can I do with the Hippo at the basic level?" It would've certainly been more instructive if he was more familiar with it. Also, yeah I didn't check how long it's been since I last watched that series. 😅

Isn't that interesting? Eric did a hippo speed run and he got smacked playing against an opening he's played hundreds of times! I try to attack the bishops ASAP against the hippo. Always with the rook's pawn on one side and a bishop battery on the other.

@@TheChessGiant This might be the best beginner opening! Even if opponent makes contact on move 5 you can still close the position and be pretty safe. Just bide your time and keep your eyes peeled for blunders! I also okay the aggressive hippo opening things up right away after move 10 and it's also fun but more risky. You'll never get mated on move 7 like I have with some other openings.
