Hihats part 2: EQ & processing essentials

In last week's video we looked at strategies for programming hihat lines in dance music, and this week we look at the technical treatment of those hihats! We learn some equalisation basics (notching resonances & achieving tonal balance), some reverb techniques (adding reverb without muddiness), and some volume shaping (subtle LFO pumping). All together these techniques should ensure that your hihats gel perfectly with your track, and should give you full control over their design!

I just applied that notch EQ technique in a song I've been struggling to get sounding how I want. Instantly made my hats sound 10x better. Then I decided to give it a try on my ride and crashes, and it instantly made those sound 10x better. Then I thought maybe this could be applied to the high-end on a snare, and it instantly made the snare 100x cleaner and cut through the mix twice as well with barely any volume adjustment required. And now with all the highs being so much cleaner, the entire mix sounds levelled up with hardly any adjustment to the other parts. Game changer! Thank you!

I find the eq method you use actually creates those peak frequencies. I like to turn on the speaker icon of the eq and rather than push the eq band up I pull it down and move slowly from left to right. You will hear the troublesome frequencies pop out and sond like feedback. This also xlnt for low end also as you can here the lower frequency you are notching while still listening to your mix. Cheers for all the tips :)

I had heard about notching before, but was hesitant to touch it as I heard a counter argument that you could be battling against your room acoustics rather than the sound itself, but I went to my headphones and tried this method, and I actually was blown away when I A/B after notching and altering the overall tonal dynamic after notching too. Night and day. Thank-you!

This is a good tutorial I feel like most people just throw hi hats on Do a low cut on them and push the frequencies. Cutting out those peaks then do a slight broad eq boost to make them brighter or darker depending on your vibe is very smooth. Then adding the reverb will definitely use these tips in my productions. Thank you

Hi Oscar! I just discovered your channel in the last week when I was looking up how to create techno rumble - great video on that BTW. I'm loving your aproach and it's helping me integrate the 11 courses I took with Point Blank haha. I like how your videos incorporate elements of everything from genre-specific sound selection, sound design and composition as well as emphasizing the importance of the elements of mixing (EQ, Dynamics, FX, etc) into the composition process. Coming from a Rock/pop background in my youth, now making electronic music, I have been confused about what order to approach this in, and I've neglected the importance of the mixing elements in early stages of composition. It took me a long time to drop my old approach of writing a traditional song with a guitar and a piano like I used to, when it's really all about the chords, melody, performance and arrangement and to conclude that the mixing and audio FX are themselves core elements of COMPOSITION in electronic music and therefore must form part of the process from the very start. It's not to say that melodic elements and arrangement are unimportant, they are also key, but the mixing elements themselves can largely form the backbone of a track (especially in techno). I just have a few comments about the EQing technique you went over for notching out resonant frequencies in the hi-hats. 1. I think this is a good idea, but I assume I should be cautious not to add in too many notches or to cut too deeply because it could profoundly alter the sound of the HH, maybe not always in the best manner. Nevertheless, I like this idea, and I will try using it. 2. For those watching, I think it is worth mentionning that all of this EQ work goes out the window as soon as you change the pitch of your sample. If you want to pitch up and down, either statically, or dynamically with an envelope or LFO, this would have to come after the EQ in the FX chain. OR alternatively, freeze and flatten the sample after EQing and then putting that sample back into the simpler. 3. Another point of caution when using this EQing technique is that it may be a good idea to use a good pair of headphones to do this or at least to double check your choices using headphones. Unless your listening room is very well treated, it is possible that the resonant frequencies you will be hearing and notching out actually belong to resonant frequencies that exist in your room rather than in the sample. As well, if I am not mistaken, if the boost and Q are too high, the filter itself can self resonate and create a tone that comes from the EQ itself rather than from the sample, and you will be tempted to put in too many notches.

I agree in half with this technique. If you cut out resonances, which are outside the key scale. But if you cut out all of them, so drastically like in your example, you kill this sample. Correct example is; you should volume up of Q a slightly, and listen to, when the boosted frequency is disturbing. Now you've got the spot. Then you should put Q a volume in the same, but in negative value. Still remember to cut out only frequencies outside your scale. If there are some most disturbing points in the key, cut it only slightly.
