Highview, KY Federal Signal 3T22 Hi/Lo Siren Test -5/14/19

Ғылым және технология

Decided to Jam on over to Louisville after Oldham county. Someone gave me my a tip that one of the 3T22's in Jefferson county's system did Hi/Lo and I jumped on the opportunity to hear my first Hi/Lo signal. This faded yellow 3T22 is located atop the Highview fire station off of 864. I believe this is the only siren that does hi lo in the system. It's one of the few roof mounted sirens in the system as well. Louisville test on the second Tuesday of the month at 12 Noon.

Always loved the hi/low sounds these sirens produce...such a melodic sound. I remember as a kid growing up in a small Nebraska town, the local used this siren for all of their fire calls. To this day, this particular siren is still their. I know it is still used for their Noon & 6 o'clock siren. As for fire calls, I haven't heard it used but my guess is they still use it.

Awesome recording! I've been noticing a couple interesting siren occurrences in different Louisville areas; I wonder if anyone knows about them. Multiple times during or after stormy weather, I've noticed an extremely distant Whelen sounding in hi-lo. I want to say it's somewhere far south or maybe southeast of the University of Louisville. I never hear any other sirens when I hear it. Secondly, a few weeks ago in Lyndon, I heard a single rotating siren from far away, sounding in fast wail. I don't know what its make and model are. It could perhaps have been a 2001.

@Timofey Kozyrev It's not right. People come here for the uploader's videos, not yours. If your videos are good and have good viewer retention, they get promoted more heavily by youtube. If not, they stall with 50-200 views. If you need to plug your channels in comments of *other people's* videos you're probably not doing something right. Plugging your channel in comments makes you look desperate for channel growth and is unsustainable because most people think "Oh that guy wants me to visit his channel because he commented about it. I'm not going to." Work on your channel first like adding tags and seo, not piggybacking off of other's success. No, I won't be nice about you using someone else's channel to benefit yourself.

Listen every second Tuesday of the month at noon. The Hi/Lo is a controller mistake that has apparently gone unnoticed (unreported) for several years. It ought to be fixed for the June ‘20 test. Louisville/Jefferson Co. EMA outdoor warning sirens weather warn and test in “alert” mode. They never run in “attack” unless warning of an actual enemy attack. Hi/Lo hasn’t been used since the introduction of universal fire pager use in the late 1980’s.

This isn't supposed to be running hi-lo. All of the outdoor warning sirens should run in alert mode for three minutes during the monthly siren test. It did hi-lo again today. Close by you can hear a 1003 running in alert.

@@Joethaboss66 yeah it kinda does if the outdoor warning system is intended to convey specific messages to those in the community. We never run our OWS in attack mode here only in alert mode for tornado warnings. To use the fire mode could confuse people when they ought to be taking cover. It wasn’t very long ago when these sirens were still used to alert volunteers.

I am almost certain the people living there don't know what the different signals mean and their correct names. All they most likely know is that if the siren goes off any other time then the testing date, then there is danger. The only people who would know the signals would be the volunteer firefighters but I have heard that they haven't used that siren for the fire department for around 35 years.

When you’re ready to run the OWS system let me know and I’ll get you an application. When there are irregularities be sure to tell the director not to worry because “it’s just cool.” Enjoy the reaction. >>>nothing follows

If I were to be running the siren system, I would make several changes to the way things are done. First, the existing testing schedule and structure would go. Under my supervision, tests would be conducted on the first day of the month at 10:00am. Sirens would sound a 2-minute attack signal followed by a 45-second break. Then, a 2 minute Alert on all non-damper-equipped sirens and Hi-Lo on all damper-equipped sirens such as the 3T22's and Thunderbolt 1003's would be sounded. During tornado warnings, all sirens would sound Attack as it would be designated as the shelter in place tone, because it is very attention-grabbing, and it is universally interpreted as "something bad is gonna happen". In situations where residents need to evacuate, sirens will sound Hi-Lo and alert (basically a steady signal) as they will be designated as evacuation tones. If a fire department such as Highview would like to start using their siren again for fire calls, the siren policy would be revised accordingly since the signal they would use would be Hi-Lo. In addition, I would fix all the issues with different sirens such as dirty collector rings and broken damper assemblies at sirens such as the one at Hornback Park and Worthington VFD which both have broken upper dampers. To find failures with different sirens once a year I would send people to each of the sirens to listen to the test and report any problems the siren had during the test (Ex: failure to activate, broken dampers, bad collector rings). If any new sirens such as 2001's or Whelen's require a repair that would cost more than putting up a refurbished old siren, then an old school replacement would be in order (I would totally put up a Hurricane if someone found one for me).
