Highlights from Keir Starmer’s no limits phone-in on LBC

Keir Starmer returns to the LBC studio for what could be his last time as Leader of the Opposition. He faced questions from Nick Ferrari and LBC callers as he and Labour look set to seize the keys to Downing Street in what would be a historic victory.
LBC's Natasha Clark takes you through the biggest moments:
00:19 "I'm not going to write the next five budgets right now."
Starmer repeatedly refuses to rule out council tax rises.
03:01 "Would you have served in Corbyn's cabinet if he'd won? Yes or no?"
A 'simple yes or no answer' about Corbyn does not result in a yes or a no.
05:09 "I seem to be one of those people that Labour has chosen to despise."
Starmer is quizzed on his policy to end the private schools tax break.
08:13 "I cannot overemphasise how dire the situation is."
How will Keir Starmer resolve the doctors' strike? By resolving it, of course.
12:20 "Let me kill that one. I'm not looking at that."
The Labour leader rules out a 10% transfer levy on Premier League football clubs.

@@johncheetham4607 get off your bigoted horse for a minute and look at some facts. Because of Tory legislation councils of all persuasions are limited in the amount they are allowed to borrow. You need to borrow if you want too build because councils just like private citizens take out long term mortgagees on any property they build. Under the Tory right to buy anybody who has been in a council property for three years is entitled to buy that property at a discount. When sold half of the profit goes to central government and half to the council. So if councils build they risk losing the property in three years at a loss but central government takes half of the sold price less build price so they lose even more. That means the local Council Tax payers are subsidising both central government and the private housing sector.

Everything else is a % slice of variable inputs, where Council Tax is a fixed sum independent of increasing property values etc. The amount of Income Tax/NI you pay (the amount, not the %rate) increases every time you get a pay rise or second job etc but Council Tax reduces in real terms if it is not increased. For most of the last 20 years Council Tax has risen by less than the rate of inflation - meaning that Council Tax - just like public sector pay - has fallen in real terms - not increased. Council Tax increases in line with inflation should be normal and healthy, not abhorrent and objectionable.

How close are you to being able to afford private school? My guess is that even if it was 20% cheaper you still couldn't afford it! Isn't it better that state schools are better funded, so that all aspirationonal parents have a better chance of their kids doing well?

@@nigeltrigger4499 guessing you are full of it. About a third won't care about the increase as it won't be a problem, a third will fund it with difficulty and a third will have to take their kids out of the private school and try to find a place at a state school, where such places often don't exist. People that go to private school have still paid taxes for other children's education. They get no tax relief for NOT using a state place that they have effectively paid for and NOW you want them to pay an extra 20pct VAT on that cost ?

Would you rather keep Sunak who just blatantly lies about everything? Or maybe vote Reform...the party whose core policy could not possibly be implemented? The problem with it is that nobody would reform a system which has put them there.

As I remarked, nobody would reform a system which put them there, so Reform's primary policy is null. This allows them to publish a manifesto of ideals which are simply not feasible. The other parties don;t see them as a threat which is why they don't expose the flaws in their policies. They are also Tory outcasts, led by a "Bandwagonist"... Farage jumps on the bandwagon of anything which will make him popular. He led the UKIP party a while ago & most of the population now feel that Brexit was a bad idea or badly managed. Has this been forgotten? They appear to have captured the imagination of some though. Or maybe they are just a protest vote?
