HIGHLIGHTS | Everton vs Arsenal (1-1) | WSL | Russo

Спорт

We slipped to a disappointing 1-1 draw against Everton in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League on Sunday.
Alessia Russo scored what she thought was the winner after pushing forward late on, but Everton’s threat from set-pieces paid off deep into stoppage time as Isabella Hobson headed home from a corner.
Stina Blackstenius looked the most threatening in the opening exchanges as we looked to find a way past Everton’s organised back five.
Our Sweden international continued to make dangerous runs between the central defenders and came close to an opener when her driven effort was saved at the near post.
At the other end of the pitch Justine Vanhaevermaet climbed high from a corner to rattle the crossbar with a powerful header, but that concluded the action from a quiet first half where both teams cancelled each other out.
Following the restart we carved out two promising chances. First Steph Catley’s looping header was claimed by Courtney Brosnan, before Victoria Pelova failed to adjust her feet and fired wide from Katie McCabe’s cutback
We remained patient with our attacking play and eventually got out reward through Russo, who was in the right place at the right time to convert from inside the six-yard area after Mead’s initial effort was saved.
That should have been our game-winning moment, but Everton kept applying pressure through set pieces and with just a couple minutes remaining of added time, Hobson climbed high to meet a corner delivery and looped the ball into the back of the net.

We’re going nowhere with this coaching group, no improvement since Jonas’ first season. Quality of players have improved but how they’re set up and what they’re told to do has not. Please just let him go in the summer 🙏

I think Jonas needs more time. We've seen with Arteta that investment is needed in the striker position and in both respective squads to fight for titles. Be patient, Jonas will deliver.

@@WinstonChurchill732 I was with Jonas til this season, this squad is FAR too talented to be out the title race in March. Stina, Russo, Mead, Lacasse, Foord… there’s more than enough there to beat 9 out of the 11 other teams. This staff only has a plan A and when that fails he and his coaches crumble. If we sacked Jonas tomorrow no big club would be after him, he’s coaching a team superior to his own abilities, whereas Arteta didn’t have the talent to match his ideas.

@@WinstonChurchill732 There has to be a change in this coaching staff, especially with regard to set pieces, the coach in charge is not working enough in this area

@chug-chug-pickles The women had a remarkable league standing in Jonas's first Season, and this season has been plagued by a lack of cutting edge in front of goal. If you sacked Jonas, we reset back to square 1 with a new manager who would demand new players. Be realistic, more quality is needed in the Squad, and a striker who can score 15+ goals a season. I've heard there will be big emphasis on more investment into Arsenal Women, so sacking Jonas will counterbalance everything we are planning to do. Stick with Jonas. Success will come with more investment and quality in the side.

@@WinstonChurchill732 This is what the fans expect, as always finishing third is not the obstinacy necessary to win the most important title in the championship.

Sometimes when a team defends in numbers and resolutely, the best way to break the deadlock might be by shooting from outside the box, as we saw Ella do yesterday against Leicester: Arsenal need to look at that, and think about whether there are other opportunities if you can't score from close range. I'd also question how often we've scored from corner headers this season, and how that compares to other WSL teams: if we're worse than other teams, what can our set-piece coach do to change that?

Do any of them even want to be there? why do they look so passionless, they look like they don't even want to be there...seems like this group cares more about their PR and social media following then the club. Sad to see I remember how good this team used to be, now they can't even care enough to try and beat Everton

In the whole of this season the only time we managed to turn a game around by a special act of brilliance is against Man United by Lacasse ...we lack top quality players in many positions. That's why we cant hurt any team when they defend resolutely and intensely.

I don't think it's player quality that's lacking, I think it's the way they're told to play that is the problem. We know the team can take long range shots and score, we know they can put early high crosses into the box for Stina or Allessia to head home, but they rarely do. They seem to be told to always take the ball into the penalty box and do a low pass across goal for someone to tap in, but that's maybe the easiest type of ball for defenders to deal with. We're too predictable.
