My great great great grandfather fought in the battle of Culloden, and was taken prisoner. He was first sentenced to death , but due to his age(he was only 15 at that time) his sentence was commuted to exile to the colonies. He was shipped to Virginia as an indentured servant to a plantation owner. After a year on the plantation he decided to run away to the Appalachian mountains, settling in what is today southwestern Virginia. That is way the name Lawson is so common in this part of the country.

I think Tennessee has a lot of areas settled the same way. A lot of customs in this area I simply don't understand, me being from northern Ohio, from an area settled by another set of indentured people from Germany and eastern Europe to work the Great Lakes Transport boats. When you think that most Americans have these kinds of family stories, that begin, "When my great great grandparent came here as an indentured servant," or as a slave for life for someone's profit, this tells us that the US was never founded on freedom. Especially not religious freedom. We were founded as a business deal, and we still are.

I read a book a while back on the subject of the Highland Clearances. In the book, the author explains that the land was taken by Scottish landlords (clan chiefs) whose sons had been sent to England to study in the schools and universities. These sons felt more English than Scottish. They lost their connection to their own culture, and it was they who 'realised' that the land would be better used (more valuable) if sheep roamed on it instead of peasants. To make this happen, they had the small landowners evicted and pushed them to the coast where they were basically destitute. Once the people were removed to the coast, they were encouraged to get on the ships bound for the new world. The versions are similar except for the idea that it was Scottish landowners who did the removal and not powerful English people. Patrick Sellar and the Duchess of Sutherland, for example, were both Scottish. She was the head of the Sutherland clan. In your story, you keep saying it was the English who were doing the removal of the people of the Highlands, but it wasn't. I think it makes the story even more sinister to find out that it was Scottish people doing this to their own kin. I also read another thing were it talked about the clan chiefs rather suddenly demanding rent from their clan members where traditionally, the tenants would pay in kind. This was the beginning of the end of duthchas and a more commercial (modern) approach to landownership. So, all in all, I think it safe to say that the Scottish peasants were victims of their own Scottish landlords. Another point, poor people from England, Ireland and Scotland who traveled to the New World were almost always indentured servants when they arrived because they owed the fare of their crossing to those who had organised it. This was not something specific to the people of the Highlands.

The Internet started existing when I was in middle/high school, so I remember doing old fashioned Library research for a little while but then switched to researching online..... But man I wish all these amazing Creators existed back then, there is SO MUCH information now to use as inspiration, references, etc.... I probably could have gotten scholarships if I had all this to help me! Your granddaughter is lucky to be alive for this WEALTH of free information 😍😍😍 Good luck to her, I hope she gets all A's and extra credit and gets into her college of choice and has the best life ever!!

WoW! Jiles, this so interesting to me because one of my ancestors left Scotland for the US in 1750, just a few short years after the Jacobin uprising and the elimination of clan identity. He was from Perth between the lowlands and Highlands and from Clan Bruce. I have no idea if this is why he emigrated but the timing suggests something changed his mind about living in Scotland at the same time as this occurred! Thanks so much!

My dad JUST came back from Scotland and brought me a tea towel with my clan crest and details on it. Most random gift ever, but I love it.

Jiles, I really enjoy all of your videos but I feel that I must point out that the majority of the landowners who participated in the clearances were Scottish. There was a goundswell of opinion amongst the Scottish ruling class that the Highland Clan system and the Border Reiver Clans were detrimental to the future of Scotland and this can be seen in the Suppression of Unruly Clans Act of 1587 and the Statutes of Iona of 1609 the latter of which was perhaps the first step towards dismantling the Highland Clans solely. I've really enjoyed this video, partly because I'm a descendent of Highlanders and Reivers, but mainly because I appreciate the work that you put into your videos.

@@-._A2._- That's the way my grandfather taught it to me. His father was from Nova Scotia and his father was the immigrant. My grandfather still spoke a little Gaelic and I loved his stories about Scottish history. The other line is Irish so zapped twice.

If you read more educated comments, you will learn that it was wealthy Scottish clans that did a lot of the land clearing,. This information is also in official history records, if interested? But it's popular to always blame only the English. Real resentment should be held against Westminster. Power and wealth is not found in the average citizen, it's always found in a select few, making rules for everyone. No matter where you are, the dynamics are the same.

I don't believe I have any Scottish in me, but I have always been interested Scotland. It definitely has a tumultuous history!

On my mothers 60th birthday, my grandmother from Pictou, Nova Scotia bought the material for the McGregor tartan from a Scottish owned store and made a kilt for her. It was so early, and the creatures were used to make political decisions in their slaughter of land, to watch native species grow into extinction. Remember it was done in East Anglia too. That is why Australians talk slightly like they are from there. EA was cleared and turned from sheep to farming, and Scotland was cleared to make way for the sheep!

The comment about Marx seeing the clearances as an example of "Capitalism run amuck" is silly. In the later chapters of 'Capital' Marx explains "So called Primitive Accumulation", and how the Scottish clearances were part of how early capitalism formed. In order to push them into situations and localities where capitalism needed wage labor to develop its further domination and strength, people had to be forced off of their lands where they did not live under a wage system. This was not a mere example of the evils of capitalism ("capitalism run amuck"), it was the systematic and intentional growth of capitalism. For further understanding I suggest '33 Lessons on Capital: Reading Marx Politically' by Harry Cleaver which begins mentioning the clearances towards the beginning of the book, it's an easy amd enjoyable read.

Wales and England were joined together in 1284 long before the Act of Union in 1707. James VI was succeeded by his son Charles not William of Orange as implied. Catholic Scots supported Bonnie Prince Charlie. Just as many were on the other side. It was not a battle between England and Scotland but a battle of religious belief.

I live in Oregon. Scotland and Oregon and Scotland have a similar size and population Some of my family left early after Flodden Fields, not by choice but the other part of the family left during the clearances. They left to both the US and Canada. But if my family hadn’t have come John Muir would never had had a chance to hike through Yellowstone or the Giant Redwoods and help create the federal parks service

Sorry Jiles a I'm totally confused. James I didn't die in The Glorious Revolution, he sired Charles I, who sired Charles II and James II, and died of old age in his bed. I think you might be confusing him for his grandson James II, who ruled for three years after the restoration of the monarchy which saw the accession of his brother Charles II to the throne. Part of the reason England had it's civil war was to do with religion and James's II Catholicism is what got him replaced by William and Mary, his son-in-law and daughter.

The Union did pretty much the same thing to the Confederate states during and after the Civil War. I guess humanity as an adjective in common parlance is diametrically opposed to its true meaning, which is to treat each other in the worst way possible.

Hate to be THAT person but there is a big error in the early narration of British history in this podcast, England annexed Wales in 1284 and enacted an act of union between those 2 countries in 1536, well before the act of union with Scotland. As a native born Welshman, believe me, the English have been effing us even longer than they have the Scottish!

Thr whole country was screwed over with the enclosure act. At least Scotland has the right to roam in England we have zero rights and lost all our common land. Camping is illegal unless on land with express permission of the owner. Which they charge for.

It is crazy how long grudges last. I can’t grasp being hateful and so locked into the mind, to always be angry about events that happened literally - hundreds of years ago. Perhaps because I was born in the US where everybody is mad about one thing or another. We seriously need to educate and not indoctrinate. Happy 🎃candy sales day😉💚
