Highest mileage Volvo 850 in the country... MOT verdict and update

After buying the highest mileage Volvo 850 T5 in the country in Part 1, in Part 2 we take a look at the MOT debacle, and see whether I've managed to get a fresh ticket on the old girl. 462,000 miles is quite an achievement for an old car, so we'll have a browse around the Volvo, go for a little drive, eat some cake and talk about the plans for the future.
With absolutely ZERO conspiracy theories! Well, apart from two teasers of upcoming videos and a very open ended question about contrails. Sorry, I mean chemtrails. No wait, I do mean contrails. I think...?
Enjoy!
(PS for those of you who noticed it went on KZread and then disappeared, only to pop back again... it was because I'd left out the cut away shot of the new numberplates, and felt it worth a reupload to put that in!)

I have a 95 950 Estate, it's done around 210000 miles and is in fairly good condition for it's age. Brought it cheap15years ago and it owes me nothing. Worse thing about it is that it doesn't do many miles to the gallon so it's on a SORN at the moment. Amazing how much stuff you can get in these old Volvos.

Intermittent ABS light on an 850 is normally down to the ABS module bolted on the pump mate, The soldered joints inside deteriorate due to age, All you need to do is get inside it and reflow the solder with a soldering iron, It worked for my T5 8 years ago and i've had no problems ever since 👌As for this 850 T5 you've got you must get it to 500K miles! Check the PCV system is OK, Give it a decent oil and filter change and give it an autobox trans flush if the oil looks brownish!

Its so good not to have abs, electronics, katalysator, airbag... It has saved me so much money so I have bought ridiculous luxury items for it like full new truck A/C kit, new webasto, now Im planning to install new titanium exhaust to it just to make the car inspector laugh a bit more. It has working monroe rear shocks on it after 35 years of service just completely ridiculously strong car and original untouched rear axle, gearbox, motor (had new gasgets installed). And good zinc coding from factory so no rust holes except 1 under drivers shoes.

unless the wheels need straightening or welding then £100 per corner is a bit much. if your on a budget, remove the tyres and clean the rim where the bead sits down to bare metal and re-paint all off the inside. the problem is corrosion gets under the beads and lifts the paint from the rim, even when they paint that black rubber sealant on, unless they fully clean the bead seat, it just sits on the lifted paint.

These and the P1 V70 are built like tanks... My '99 V70 had its first MOT failure last month, mainly as I hit a pot hole on the way to the test centre which took out the front strut were the spring sits. Two new struts and spring fitted and it past the retest. Interestingly both struts were the factory fitted originals. I bet cars built today won't go 24 years and 170,000 miles on their original parts. Those columbia wheels that you have are notorious for going out of round causing the tyre not to sit right and thus slowly deflates. I replaced mine with aftermarket wheels as I was fed up having to replace front tyres so often due to the uneven wear. 462K... that must mean my V70 is just about run in then 😆

unless main dealer or volvo specialist, i doubt they have the tool to reset the abs, which is why it was on when you picked it up. abs does self test at (is it 20mph or so, cant remember, but when it makes that strange noise on first move off) which is why the code is coming and going. good result on mot, could be lot worse, not lloyd's vehicle consulting worse as in lets wright the car off as its had a catastrophic bulb failure!! but lots of things like link rods, control arms etc.

Think from memory its the 2 pin motor connector that dry joints. I enlarge the copper pad and resolder, then reflow all the other pins along the bottom. Need e4 torx, dremel with cutting wheel and some silicone. 30 mins all in excl drying. Nice easy job not catastrophic!!.

I would love to know how many miles your Volvo travelled under the LPG system and did it fail or was it turned off deliberately? My only experience of those systems from back in the eighties is that they stink when running on the LPG and that the combustion chambers run dry and hot, and had a tendency to burn out the exhaust valves, so I am amazed at the high recorded mileage. A question popped into my head as I was typing. Is it still the original engine?

We had ours converted at 112,000. People thought we were nuts but the exterior was solid, interior fine, everything worked. The only bit I didn't like was the 28mpg on petrol. We've since done nearly another 200,000 miles on LPG. The injectors are way past renewal time but are obsolete so when it works, it works as it will but with many LPG stations shutting down, I guess it's back to petrol.

Totally agree about the pollution created by making new cars instead of not scrapping old ones Geoff. With regard to the ABS warning light; I had similar problems on my 1997 V70, I removed the ABS module, opened it up and re-soldered the joints where the multi-way plug attaches this fixed my issues. I'm lucky that I have a microscope and could see numerous cracks in the solder joints, so I was confident this was the problem, it isn't always though but may be worth checking, here's a video where this and another fix was attempted but unfortunately did not remedy the issue but it will show you what was involved: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aq2Lt7iznLHZm6Q.html. Hope that may help.......I see others did the same fix with success

Geoff's "old high mileage Volvo" is actually FAR WORSE for the Environment than an EV, HERE is HOW that is calculated, first there is the initial environmental footprint, concerning the manufacturing of the vehicle, it takes less resources to make an ICE vehicle compared to an EV, BUT, as soon as both of these vehicles hit the road, the ICE vehicle has a far heavier environmental footprint, compared to an EV and after about 3 years on the road, as the ICE vehicle OVERTAKES the EV in the "heavier environmental footprint" department, as the ICE vehicle "continues to pump out CO2 and NOx" during its entire lifespan, therefore the more miles it does, the worse it is for the Planet.

  • @mostlyoldthings

    @mostlyoldthings

    Жыл бұрын

Thanks Kevin Fair point. Currently the UK generates about 29% of it electricity from fossil fuels as I understand it, so not all use of EV's is CO2 free, but I get what you are saying, assuming that they cover similar mileages per year. However, I believe lots of these old classics are only used occasionally (my 1997 V70 did about 1500 miles last year) so if they do less than 1/3 the mileage of an everyday use, 12,000 mile, EV we are in the same carbon emission ballpark -maybe just me trying to justify my earlier comment but just a thought......I do indeed look forward to a time when all power generation is carbon free and EV's have comparable range and there is a comprehensive charging network, I also welcome better battery technology where it would be less problematic to recycle. On a social point however, it appears that many of the EV's produced are prestige items, and purchase costs are beyond many less well off members of society, so although ICE's may be worse, for many they are the only current (no pun intended!) choice for those who need mobility but who are struggling financially. It would be better in my opinion to make smaller, non-SUV sized EV's which had scaled back performance (we all know how fast some EV's are, ridiculous in some instances) lighter weight with a presumably then better range. Hopefully this would mean they would also be more affordable rather than status symbols? I'd certainly buy one if the price was more competitive.

What I've done over the years is get them to do an NCD match on a new policy. I've ended up with 6 policies all with full NCD and if I change a car (quite rare which is how I've ended up with too many), a policy NCD can sit idle for a year or thereabouts before being applied again. I've managed to get most on a multicar but three being modified usually ends up with one car being orphaned. Another is a classic so on it's own policy.
