I must have watched this a few years ago, cuz it’s exactly the way I play it. But I never learned the chorus, or I forgot it, so I was looking for a tutorial and I’m like...Hey, this is familiar lol. Anyways thanks for lesson. I think this was first dead song I ever heard back in high school ‘93, or it was my fav back then. Dead and company do a great job playing this, bob, JM, and the big bass player all sing a verse.

@@micahlong8186 yea, I've checked out your channel and am already working on "New Speedway Boogie". Great lesson with a lot of feel. You do a really great job of breaking down what can be rather complex arrangements - Jerry and Bob were so great in the way they played off one another....I miss seeing them live - keep up the good work Micah - cheers mate!

I used to play this song all the time, on guitar usually and sometimes with a mandolin. But here I am, a couple or more decades later, trying to learn it again. Guess I got a bit of the bidens.

@@autistichead8137 Sounds fun. I'll have time to make a video next weekend for the intro. If you've been playing guitar a little while the intro is pretty simple. Just some slides with simple notation, a hammer on and a few chord punches in between. The introduction to High Time is important because it's used throughout the song. A major facet of the melody is to drop the 6th string to D before standardizing the rest of the guitar strings to that lower key. If I'm up to it, I'll throw in Jerry's banjo solo on Midnight Moonlight with Old and in the Way. Its got nothing to do with High Time, though it's worth checking since you can take it far. I'll create a more complex solo and quickly go over the licks to keep it short. Edit: You'll have to subscribe so you know when I post since I don't always leave my videos on.

@@oilartworks9124 Thanks that would be great! I got it a little figured out but it’s always good to get tips from people who’ve been playing longer! I’ve only been playing for two years, my attempt repertoire is a few grateful dead, some Howe, some Hillage, Some Wes, some Iommi, I really want to nail tunes like high time because the tempo is excellent for an intermediate player like myself. While Yes, Wes and Hillage are more aspirational.

@@autistichead8137 Glad you got it figured out. Yes, tempo is important. The best tip I ever got from a professional musician was over 30 years ago. I'll never forget it. "Learn the instrument you want to play along with the songs." Of course Keith Richards Grandfather's tip is just as good. "Keep on playing. At worst you'll have lots of fun and at best an opportunity." If you like Wes Montgomery, you'll enjoy what I do on Jerry's banjo solo later on. (Thumb on the high 5th G banjo string in a reverse). Keith Richards said the root to Rock and Roll Really began in open G. When Les Paul guitars first arrived, many, (like Keith) completely removed the 6th string from the instrument and tuned to open keys just like a standardised banjo tuning. Most guitarists forget that banjos were the most popular American instrument before then. Peace
