High Risk Day Tornado Mangum Oklahoma May 20, 2019

May 20, 2019 was a rare High Risk day for Tornadoes. In the heart of 44,967 sq miles of High Risk area sits Hollis and Mangum, OK. Jeff Piotrowski intercepted a tornado warned storm that developed near Hollis and produced a damaging tornado which entered the city of Mangum. These storms were moving very fast making the chase even more dangerous.

Spectacular video Jeff!!!! I remember when I was a young teenager and saw you on a couple of different tornado documentries and I remember your enthusiasm and gusto explaining about tornadoes back then, and it's very obvious that you have learned so much knowledge and experience and it is wonderful to see your career excel through the years. You have a very recognizable voice, that, as soon as I hear your voice, I instantly know it's Jeff Piotrowski!! I had not seen your videos (or any other storm chasing videos) in a while, but yesterday I clicked on a tornado live stream, and I INSTANTLY knew it was you within a couple of seconds haha. Keep up the wonderful work!! You are my favourite storm chaser/meteorologist by far!

Deposition driven stovepipe tornado to deposition driven tube or sock tornado. Very cool. SW OK seems to get a lot of deposition driven tornados. West South-Central OK, Tornado Basin (area bounded by Lawton to OKC to Sulfur), tends to get a lot of condensation driven wedge tornados-and monster in size. Thanks for the vid.

This whole storm, on May 20, was actually predicted to be like April 27, 2011. Yes, there was deadly amounts of deadly tornadoes that day, but the next couple days completely decimated that record. Just in about an hour late in Missouri, there was 29 CONFIRMED tornadoes. And it just so happened to be that it was on the anniversary of the Joplin tornado. This was a very violent storm system, and it barely skipped us, her in NW Arkansas.

Fun fact I was there. I live in mangum oklahoma and I saw the tornado with my own eyes. My Nana and papa didn’t want to go when the sirens went off and we look outside the front door and there the tornado was. We rushed to the back and got into the car and drove to a nearby daycare that had a shelter, my nana works there. It was the most traumatizing thing I’ve ever experienced. I was outside with a tornado right there.

Had this tornado hit anything well-built at its peak intensity, it definitely would've been rated higher. I live near Nashville, TN and was anxious all day long on May 20th, 2019 anticipating the "big one" in Southwest Oklahoma like the historic El Rino, Moore, Joplin, or Tuscaloosa tornadoes. Glad that there were no casualties from that particular tornado.

Great job. I believe you were mostly going down Taft Street in this video of Mangum right before that tornado went across that Main Highway like it did my daughter's house was right there by the golf course she was so close to getting hit. her and her husband and her two children had taken off there's another video somewhere that shows them leaving their tail lights just hauling butt away from there.
