When I first got into the hobby circa 2001, there was a guy at my local shop everyone referred to as 'Son of Milkman'. 10 year old me had no idea why that was funny but I did know the guy was a wizard. I was stuck in the realm of base coat > layer > highlight; I hadn't even graduated to using washes. He took the old application of painting with inks and "boosted" them by putting his values down first. It blew my tiny prepubescent brain, how quickly he could build up so much contrast in so few steps. A couple of years ago, I returned to the hobby and underpainting and undershading are now common practice. I still think about that bloke and how he elevated what I thought was possible when painting little toy soldiers. Your videos give me the same vibes as watching him all those years ago. Your dad's not a milkman is he?

I'm sure you know, but if you are just doing a bunch of models, you can prime first with black, then use a white primer and spray from above the model to do a similar effect quickly. Not as high quality, but it's ok for doing a lot of models at one time.

I love this so much! One side effect is that this approach can also allow you to practice NMM in a safe manner, as, in the greyscale stage, you can focus entirely on the values and contrast alone, without the additional complexities of chromatic tones. That way, something as complex as NMM is broken down into smaller chunks of mental load and becomes much easier to manage for beginners. Excellent stuff, as always!

Would you consider doing some guides on painting miniatures with heavy body artist acrylics? I'm really curious how you would approach painting a mini that way.

Oh yeah absolutely! I made a big investment of Schmincke PRIMAcryl during Christmas to boost my collection of Liquitex Heavy Body so you'll see them a lot in the next future 😉

Question: have You ever tried working with Aquarell paints as washes? Because I think your Oil wash workflow might work there too. Except water based and You would need to fix them with varnish.

Hi Marco. I missed this video, only watching it today. This is definitaly a must know technic. You say you spend only 20min for each model to set up the black and white values. It seems your white is quite diluted, almost as a glaze... any tips to achieve such a quick painting with this diluted coat (I guess you need at last 2 or even 3 coats to get your white gradient) ?

Thanks! The trick is to work with different consistencies and opacities at the same time; layering full layers takes more time but if you already have an idea of the right values to use you can apply more opaque white on the upper parts and delicate, translucent touches in the lower midtones and shadows!

@@MarcoFrisoniNJM ok so you have a glaze consistency so that you can have translucent layers were you want and you make "stains" on purpose where you want it to be brighter ?

Hello Marco, just discovered your channel, very nice ! Instant Sub ;) I use a very similaur technique that's also fast, but the results are also more "tabletop quality" and not as detailed as your (amazing) work^^ To put it simple : black primer, light grey zenithal, some accentuations on details, and finally basecoats of what fancy the models with TAP Speedpaints^^ Finished a 10 Sicarians squad in +-12hrs :) Very fast and efficient for batch-painting, and the result on the table is very satisfying :) Anyway, thanks for your video, I'll try this on my next HQs I think ;)

I tried to do grisaille for the first time this weekend. Realized I am terrible at it. I think one of the most challenging parts for me is getting a good mix/consistency of the paint. Also realized that leaving black anywhere you want to see color is a horrible idea as the contrast paint loses out every time vs. black.

Amazing work as usual Marco, keen to try this out on a blood bowl team! Do you use a fluid or a gel medium when thinning the acrylic gouache?

Have you done any mini painting videos with watercolors? How does it compare to other types of paints? Any tips? I just bought some wizkids minis (my first minis, mostly because they come pre-primed) and I'm curious as to the effectiveness of painting with the watercolors I already have (also have some oil paints, I might try using them together, if I feel brave).

Amazing work and technique Marco :) I have a question... Do you mix any mediums or matt varnish along with the white acrylic ink? Or do you just use it straight from the bottle into the airbrush?
