When I first got into the hobby circa 2001, there was a guy at my local shop everyone referred to as 'Son of Milkman'. 10 year old me had no idea why that was funny but I did know the guy was a wizard. I was stuck in the realm of base coat > layer > highlight; I hadn't even graduated to using washes. He took the old application of painting with inks and "boosted" them by putting his values down first. It blew my tiny prepubescent brain, how quickly he could build up so much contrast in so few steps. A couple of years ago, I returned to the hobby and underpainting and undershading are now common practice. I still think about that bloke and how he elevated what I thought was possible when painting little toy soldiers. Your videos give me the same vibes as watching him all those years ago. Your dad's not a milkman is he?

I'm sure you know, but if you are just doing a bunch of models, you can prime first with black, then use a white primer and spray from above the model to do a similar effect quickly. Not as high quality, but it's ok for doing a lot of models at one time.
I can't get enough of this method with grisaille. So awesome.
I love this so much! One side effect is that this approach can also allow you to practice NMM in a safe manner, as, in the greyscale stage, you can focus entirely on the values and contrast alone, without the additional complexities of chromatic tones. That way, something as complex as NMM is broken down into smaller chunks of mental load and becomes much easier to manage for beginners. Excellent stuff, as always!
Just finished priming and zenithil highlighting an entire set of monster for a game. Now I feel like I should go strip them all and do it this way. Man. Learned so much here today!
Amazing. The greyscale and the full color are both so beautiful but in completely unique ways. Well done!
Amazing will certainly try out the sketch lines to highlight before. The models in just the black and white looked awesome.
One of my favorite videos yet!
Love it. Great demo and explanation. Thanks much, Marco.
Outstanding. Again. Keep it up Marco, your contribution to the community with regards to teaching the understanding of effectful painting processes is unmatched!

Excellent video. I was thinking this old painting method would work with glaze mediums and contrasts. So great to see you show it works.

Wow. It looks great and it is done so easily 😳
Stunning. I have never seen this technique before and I can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing your talent!!
Taking this method to my table tonight, thanks for always being inspiring. My next goals are trying to develop such interesting color pallets as you do - and bring more visual interest to my models. Rock on Marco, I hope to catch one of your classes at some point in time.
As always: highly inspirational. I immediately painted my Oldhammer Quest Heroes en gresaille, albeit not as speedy or good as you. Still highly enjoyable. I did not know how I wanted to paint them and this technique allows you to focus solely on light and texture. Millie Gracie!
fantastic as always.

I absolutely have to try this technique!! Thanks for the awesome video Marco!

I'm definitely going to try this.
This is amazing. Thanks for the lesson in Light and control:D

I take way too long to be able to realistically paint bulk batches of minis. This should help me a lot!!! I can't wait to try this technique! Thank you so much for the great tutorial and expert tips!
great video. I love the way you use contrast paints (mixing, adding retarders, etc.)
I'm comfortable now with the all 'black undercoat + zenithal white ink + black oil wash > make up sponge + acrylic white drybrushing' grisaille technique but this one is far superior. I'm gonna try this white gouache application tomorow! (Every time you publish a new video, I buy some paint the next day, what an odd coincidence :D )

Hey Marco, it was really great for myself, son and wife to meet you at the Bad Moon Cafe two weeks ago. Loved this video, well all of the NJM videos to be honest, keep 'em coming!

@@draadhaai did a test where I compared 7 different options for mixing up my own "contrast paint". The contrast medium and the glaze medium did act differently. Contrast covered more and created less highlights, glaze medium covered less and created more highlights. Both should have their uses
Truly stunning amazing work! Always love watching your content (though I don't often comment). Thank you for your continued dedication to the hobby and sharing. ❤️
These look amazing, Marco! Congratulations and thanks for sharing! A couple of questions, though: How would you adapt Liquitex Inks for the job of GW's Contrast line? Just medium and retarder, too? How would you compensate for the blue undertones in most blacks when glazing over yellow paints, as they might tend towards the green side of the spectrum? I miss being able to show up at the premiere, but work's got me busy at the usual time! Hope you're doing well!

there is a big difference it seems in the way the gouache gets applied on the surface vs acrylic. it looks like you get a lot of unique texture and variation in opacity when you use the gouache. very interesting to see

Considering that in 2 days I'm going finally to attend the class, this video helps me to understand better the underpainting! :D in the case of inks (like Liquitex or similar) what approach would you use? I know that inks are more saturated... would you use more water and medium to dilute the inks?

Thanks a million!!! And this is one of the best questions ever! Take any picture or cool illustration you like, turn it in black and white on your phone or pc and study how the values make all the heavy lifting 😉. Drawing books and tutorials are also super useful because drawing with pencil on paper you have to create the same kind of 3D modelled greyscale from the empty 2D white page!
I’ve watched nearly all of your videos. They are truly inspirational. I wonder If you have any plans to any free hand designs. Painting designs on shields for example. Thank you for your work 👍
Absolutely mind blowing ! I have to admit one thing, I loved the models in black and white too haha I really have to try that grisaille. Can a noob achieve it... ? That will be interesting anyway I guess !

Going to try this on my Zombicide set. Cant wait to give it a go. I think zombies will be a good subject for this method. Now to figure out the accompanying super cool accent ;)
дуже цікава техніка. чудове відео
You are truely a, if not the, maestro. You are the same for miniature painting as Sandro Botticelli was for art in general
Hi Marco, thanks for this awesome video! I have a Question: Without contrast paints does this approach work best with inks and medium? Do I lose to much of the value dynamic using "normal" or more opaque acrylics?
You sold me on your style with this easy-to-follow video, Marco. Inks would work fine in the place of the contrasts for the initial staining?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM
Жыл бұрын
😊😁😊! Sure inks are great for this; you just need to tame them with a bit of extra dilution and maybe a drop of medium!
Wonderful video, I’ll have to try it! It’s the perfect video for me because I’m kind of averse to using oil paints because it would be another set of products I’d have to buy, but I already have most of this, just need the retarder and gouache medium.
Oh my lord. I freaking love this comicy sketchy highlighting style I NEED to learn how to do it… but where do i start?

Hi Marco. I missed this video, only watching it today. This is definitaly a must know technic. You say you spend only 20min for each model to set up the black and white values. It seems your white is quite diluted, almost as a glaze... any tips to achieve such a quick painting with this diluted coat (I guess you need at last 2 or even 3 coats to get your white gradient) ?

Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The trick is to work with different consistencies and opacities at the same time; layering full layers takes more time but if you already have an idea of the right values to use you can apply more opaque white on the upper parts and delicate, translucent touches in the lower midtones and shadows!
@Apprendrelapeinturesurfigurine
Жыл бұрын
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM ok so you have a glaze consistency so that you can have translucent layers were you want and you make "stains" on purpose where you want it to be brighter ?
Hello Marco, just discovered your channel, very nice ! Instant Sub ;) I use a very similaur technique that's also fast, but the results are also more "tabletop quality" and not as detailed as your (amazing) work^^ To put it simple : black primer, light grey zenithal, some accentuations on details, and finally basecoats of what fancy the models with TAP Speedpaints^^ Finished a 10 Sicarians squad in +-12hrs :) Very fast and efficient for batch-painting, and the result on the table is very satisfying :) Anyway, thanks for your video, I'll try this on my next HQs I think ;)
I tried to do grisaille for the first time this weekend. Realized I am terrible at it. I think one of the most challenging parts for me is getting a good mix/consistency of the paint. Also realized that leaving black anywhere you want to see color is a horrible idea as the contrast paint loses out every time vs. black.
Amazing work as usual Marco, keen to try this out on a blood bowl team! Do you use a fluid or a gel medium when thinning the acrylic gouache?
Really awesome work Marco, what do you think about to prime in a mid-dark grey instead of black to get a lighter result?
Dam fine lookin rats you got there my friend
