High Point’s Soap Box Derbies

The High Point Historical Society hosted 1951 and '52 High Point derby driver Bill Blair and 1954 High Point Derby winner Harrison "Bud" Lyon to discuss stories about the Soap Box Derby races. This program was in conjunction with the Museum’s latest exhibition, “The Need for Speed: Soap Box Derby Racing in High Point.”

The cars were doing 60+ MPH the first year they ran at Hobby Park. They moved the start gate down the hill by 1/3rd to keep the speeds under 40MPH.
