    Really interesting video, ive been getting my head round gearboxs and your videos help alot. Great to see dog teeth interface on gears, a mix of straight cut and helical gears and how a sequential box works. The brief insight into a f1 gearbox was awesome. I was wondering how different they would be. Same principles but just a skinny alternate arrangement. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

    I learned allot from all the various booths you stopped at!!! Thank you for taking the time to share. By chance, have you explained in any of your other videos the actual shifter box, that the handle / knob runs down in to works?... I am still making my way through all your content, so have no clue if you have covered how they control convert the knob actions into differently controlled linear actions... Especially like the last one in this video where one was on top of the other... But, I also respect the fact that those may be trade mark secrets by the various manufactures there?.. Driving me nuts trying to figure out how those are gated and racked flawlessly and most importantly, precisely... Thank you for the video, this one was even more enjoyable that the last convention show you posted, which was great.in its own right, but this, you really stuck the camera lens in there for me to see... I amp'd up and heading to the shop to play... content like this is inspiring... Dru

These transmissions in this vid make the Magnum look like a piece of junk. Awesome video, I love that engine oil filter! I worked on an ARCA team from the mid 90's until 2009, our first car just had a relatively stock Super T-10. As we stepped up our equipment, we had Jericos and last transmissions were the Tex Racing T-10s. The GSRs in your clip are sexy as hell, as are the Hightowers! How would they do on the street, in place of the M20 I now want to sell? Haha

    It is interesting to see that there are specialty uses for manual transmissions in racing applications. Also a number of these racing transmissions use dog teeth instead of synchromesh for faster shifting. For regular use automobiles, manual transmissions have almost completely died out in the United States.

    David Grisez I know man. Manual transmissions are being phased out by tap shifts and paddle shifters. I guess it's too difficult for these yuppies to shift a manual while sipping their cappuccino and playing with their cell phone.

    Great video. We went to the 2015 show just a few weeks ago. The transmission vendors are really beginning to push the envelope in terms of weight, durability and technology. CNC precision has come to even the most mundane of transmissions like the three speed Saginaw. Just blows the mind.

    We certainly have been impressed with its overall durability. Key to its durability is proper engine alignment and driveshaft angles. I still get the odd 3 speed case that can crack a front mount ear, but that's just the reality. We honestly don't magnaflux the case because, the transmissions are cheap to build and replace. The reality is that too keep up with the Jones's, guys are now spending thousands and stuffing high dollar low weight reciprocal parts into the stock housings (rules) and like it or not, be legal. It's driving a lot of us crazy. Some teams are experimenting with custom gear sets, 1st; 1.23, 2nd; 1.16 and finally 1:1. I run both a 3 speed and Muncie 4 speed with the Muncie a little more durable and getting parts at lower cost. But we are falling behind in the transmission war. Hence my initial comment. Now I know why. This year's PRI really opened my eyes into what is now possible. I just can't afford it. Makes me think I might as well buy my own CNC machine and make all the custom parts myself. My class simply can't afford $5-10,000.00 transmissions! But I know some guys are really spending that kind of money.

  • @GearBoxVideo

    @GearBoxVideo

    9 жыл бұрын

    Too little or too much clutch release can be dependent on the length of your release bearing. You just can't swap bearings around. A bearing that is too long can cause your clutch to over center from having to much throw. A bearing that is too short can cause your clutch to have a release issue because you have too much free play. When I do an installation I will usually mock up the clutch bell housing, clutch fork, and release bearing to see how this throw is working in relationship to the clutch installed.

    Hey purchased your book on how to rebuild performance transmissions, awesome read, gone through it 3 or 4 times. I have a '68 mustang with a 351w that I am building to be a daily driver, I want to yard the C4 and put a stick in but can't decide on an overdrive trans. Toploader with gear vendors seems complicated, tko600 would be perfect but it seems to be plagued with shifting problems, T56 is too big and starting to get too expensive for me. What would you recommend for a overdrive manual? handle at least 550hp and shift good at 6800rpm. Just saw McLeod is coming out with a muscle car 5 speed also, any experience?

    The Mcleod unit is T5 based and not suited for your Horsepower. Some people are saying it is Mopar A833 based, it is not. Just a recased T5 with a longer countergear to add additional support. It uses a stock T5 gear profile. Richmond gear in my opinion makes the best 5 speed out there. There is a feature on it in this video. It comes with the shifter,

    GearBoxVideo Emailed Mcleod about their new muscle car 5 speed and they said that aside from the case they made, the gear sets are their own design also? found some good pictures of the tranny on Dragzine and it looks like the main shaft is supported by a casting in between 3rd and 2nd gear? Not sure what the weak links are on T5s, never had one but always heard they are weak for anything over 350hp. Like the idea of not having to hack up floor pans.

    Ryan Madden Its a T5 based design. In fact all the gears are direct copies of T5 2.95 ratio gears. The cluster was elongated to add addtional support. In reality the center to centers and tooth profiles are the same. This would make a good driver, but is not something I'd recommend for performance use.

    Question this neighbor is a "Ford transmission specialist" Everyone goes to him for not just transmission but repair/mods etc, he seems to be real good. My question is can he also do TR-6070? Are transmission like oil change where if you can do one then other cars are pretty much similar. Or are there "gotcha" or things that he needs to know/learn outside of Ford? Trying to save a few bucks if I break the tranny when I drag race it, but also want the job to be done at almost 100% since I drive it hard etc, and don't want no accidents while shifting etc. Thank you ! The 2WD and 4WD T5 have the same reverse gears. Some overall ratios might be different and you may have to swap the whole gearset.

    I’ve got a 63 Falcon with a 347 with a Mikes Transmission super duper 700 R4. I ran that (first) trans a few hundred miles and it failed, sent it back to Mikes, it wasn’t set up properly (on my end), got it back, was told by my mechanic, “no problem” just a few miles and guess what, problem. I don’t trust the tranny, want to go 4 speed, I’m driving a money pit, just venting. Suggestions?

    Nice video! These manufacturers run straight cut gears instead of quieter helical gears so they don't have as many problems with the case. Helical cut gears put a lot of thrust in the case. All of them are going to break! Period. Oh, and they all recommend special oil! I wonder who made a piece of metal that only one oil can work with?

  • @GearBoxVideo

    @GearBoxVideo

    Not really true. It depends on case design. Porshe GTP's are all helical. When you are running 8 to 10K rpm for hours conventional oils will fail.

    Neapolis it depends on the application most Street Transmissions with synchronizer rings I use a GL4 oil from driven racing oils. Composite rings take specific oils based on ring material being used
