High Mileage Family Hauler - The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
With 47 or 52 MPG combined (depending on the trim), the 2020 Sonata Hybrid is one of the most efficient cars available in America today. It's also a mild mannered mid-sized sedan with a big back seat and a huge trunk. Should this be on your shopping list in an era of low gas prices? Let's find out.

Why? You're not going to gather much energy with such an insignificant array, it encourages you to expose the vehicle to UV which is very harmful to the paint, plastics, and rubbers on the vehicle, and its moot anyway as I just spend $1.48 a gallon on gas and prices are likely to fall further as the economy declines and the price war escalates.

@@huskydinosaur2860 Yeah no, those prices aren't going to last forever. I don't see the point of the solar panels but it's nice to see it on more cars to hopefully bring the costs down, adoption rate up so more research can be done with increase efficiency.

I've wanted this on EVs for years. It makes sense to put solar panels on a roof that's otherwise wasted space. If this was a plug in hybrid, this would be my ideal car. Thanks for another great video!
As a long range highway driver, the fact the Sonata’s styling reminds me of an old Jaguar is a bonus. I just wish they made a hatchback version of it.

My thought is with the hybrid/Solor roof, best color contrast is the white base color with the black roof, or having the red.
The looks have been growing on me as well. I'm not sure what is, but the hybrid looks so much better to my eye. Looks aside, this new generation Sonata has been a very impressive entry. I'm curious as to how the new optima will compare.

I have a 2015 Sonota hybrid and the nice thing about the higher mileage is that you can go much longer distances before you must stop for gas. That gives you more options on long trips. My Sonota gets about 45 mpg and about 600 miles per tank .

45 mpg actually sucks
I drove a 2016 sonata hybrid Limited 99,000 miles in about 30 months as an Uber driver. I averaged 37 MPG over that time period. Based on your report, it looks like the 2020 sonata hybrid could improve that substantially. Now I’m driving a 2019 Santa Fe Limited and averaging 24 MPG. I would love to see a hybrid power plant in the Santa Fe. Hopefully that’s coming from Hyundai.

Yup, it's odd that there aren't more hybrid powertrain options in each model range for pretty much all cars. Toyota is pretty good about that though. Although SUVs will not match the sedan MPG numbers because they are like bricks moving through air.

I'd say there's a good chance of it as Hyundai/Kia seems more committed to hybrid and/or EV versions of their vehicles than anyone but Toyota. It helps that it's a lot easier to package these modern batteries in a conventional car than the larger batteries of a few years back.
I own this model and couldn't be happier. So many features that keep me safe! It will have to be a really high-end electric car to get me to trade up. Love your videos I learn so much!
Thanks for not putting hundreds of commercials on your vids.
Wow, this colour and the rims on the hybrid (very much nicer grille than the catfish over big grille in the Turbo) makes the car very elegant and expensive.
In the thumbnail, that's the best I think this car looks! The wheels are the right size on the hybrid, the chrome grille looks better than the blacked out grilled, and the extra chrome along the lower front fascia looks more elegant!

Great video as always, Alex. Thank you for the very informative comparables with the Accord, Camry and Fusion.
My 2011 Sonata is the best car I’ve ever owned. Exactly nothing wrong with it. I convinced my family to switch to Hyundai also. Great cars.
Thank you for another great video! I appreciate the comparisons to the Fusion
Bought a new Fusion Hybrid shortly after Ford announced they would cancel most cars and focus on SUVs. Turned out to be the right time to do so - I think I got almost 10k off MSRP. So far, the only issues I can think of are limited trunk space and dated interior... but those are things you are obviously aware of before you buy and they don't bother me. I get about 46 - 47 MPG average in it but I do drive around almost exclusively in eco mode which enables better throttle control (so you can drive around longer and more often in pure EV mode) and more regen braking. But I don't hypermile it - I drive it like a regular car, just in eco mode. Build quality is surprisingly good. No rattles or squeaks, no enormous panel gaps. Reliability, too, has been very good so far but obviously I haven't had it for that long. If you can live with the dated interior and smaller than average trunk space this seems to be a decent daily driver/commuter.
I am in Love with this car's interior and I have tested the 1.6T limited and it beats the competition in terms or interior quality and fuel efficiency.

Thanks for your continued content, AOA. And not a word about the virus. Nice! As for the Sonata, it's quite a looker, IMO. Especially those well-integrated headlights. I drive a 2019 Ioniq and do agree that the VESS (the pedestrian warning system) is very audible and annoying at lower speeds. I don't need a car that sounds like a pretend space ship.

@zachl6918

@@Artecus Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it. The Altima had good low RPM torque and even the Blizzak's would easily spin with the slightest push on the gas pedal. I currently have a 2018 Hyundai Tucson with AWD and have no issues getting around in the midwest. I hope to keep it another 4-5 years but always watch Alex's videos as he's simply the best car reviewer and for my next vehicle I'm considering going with either an Accord Hybrid or the Sonata Hybrid. If I went with either one of those winter tires would be part of the deal for me. The Nokian's that you suggested look very good. Do you normally go with studded winter tires? The blizzaks I had were not studded and maybe that was part of my problem.
Hi Alex! Thank you for another outstanding review! Do you think it is possible and a good idea to get this hybrid sonata and put on wider tires to improve braking performance for safety? What kind of stopping distance could we expect if we put on wider tires? Thank you!
Looks like a very solid product with very little compromise. Glad to see Hyundai hanging out with the old guards Honda and Toyota. The looks are stunning; almost Aston and almost Maserati, but good in its own way. Too bad I'm not looking for a people hauler, because if I was I'd totally buy a Hybrid Sonata. Not like I can't though.
I think I would be looking at a ford fusion hybrid - I get the A plan, and with gas prices being low (causing low demand for hybrids), the dealers looking to get the model off the lot (discontinued), and with car sales in general being low due to coronavirus, I think this is the time I should buy!

I think the SEL trim is the best option (at least for me). Most of the stuff on the Limited is not really necessary for a pleasant or safe driving experience. Just doesn't seem worth five grand more. I don't mind that it is a bit slower than the Accord or Camry hybrid - as long as its more or less the same as the standard ICE engine models that's fine.
I'm disappointed they went with the front end from the gas SE trim for all hybrids. A bit of a shame that smart park and the panoramic roof aren't options as well.
I'd buy it just for the blinker feature!
if Hyundai can make this a Phev with at least 50 miles of ev range like a Honda Clarity, I will buy one.
Own a 21 blue get 55 in the winter and 65 in the summer guess they improved the 21 model
I want it. The solar roof sold me because I think any electrified vehicle, appliance etc should have a solar component. Unfortunately, I already have a G35 I can use for long distance trips so when I trade my Altima I want to go full electric.
Dope how much tech is in this but i need a hybrid sport orientated vehicle

I like it. I especially prefer the front grill being not blacked out. I don't like blacked out anything. on a car.
My personal opinion is just that, a opinion. Being that I do think the time of a plug in vehicle is coming, but not just yet. The real reason is the lake of infrastructure alsong the majority of interststes and highways. From were I live I cannot find the appropriate charging station along the route I'm more likely to travel upon. Untill the infrustructures are in place the plug in hybrids will be relagated to a part time system with fuel being needed to get from point A to point B. For city/urban work a fully electic will suffice. Make mine one of those fabulous Porsche Panamera 4S hybrid model! I LOVE those cars!
Is there a way to manually adjust the intensity of the regenerative braking without touching the brake pedal, such as the "B" mode on the Accord hybrid or the paddles on some EVs?
I will be replacing my 2012 Prius (eventually), and this one is on my shortlist!
I love the front, but yet though still wish it had some great stylish functional foglights. And some sort of different taillights unique to the hybrid version. Kind of like how the 2011-14 model had it's on unique styling Q's.

It sad that Ford has basically dumped the Fusion. Hence it’s older feel. Luckily Hyundai will keep the look of the Fusion long after Ford’s switch to SUV’s.
Ca you run the aircon while in the sun, with the car turned-off?
Is it possible to get the bottom bits of the grill blacked out? I don't like that A/A lauded change in the grill from the normal Sonata
When will this hybrid arrive at the dealerships?
Alex, can the Sonata hybrid recharge the battery using the engine as you mentioned in your Accord hybrid video? Thanks.
So much better looking than the regular gas version. The new hybrid system is a concern, but in a year or so this will be a *very* compelling competitor in the segment. I've found in the real world Toyota hybrids also do better on the freeway than the city. I think the EPA city driving cycle isn't realistic, maybe they let the engine warm up too much or assume too much speed change on the freeway or something. On long freeway trips it's easy to get well over 60 mpg and on most city trips I can't even get 50 because on shorter trips the engine is cold.
Alex, on the vehicle scale you have "Stinger" listed under the Legacy. Is this a typo? I owned one and it was a segment bigger than these cars. Thanks so much!

The stinger is smaller outside (and really inside) than the Legacy. It is solidly a mid-size sedan in the USA.

Another great review Alex! I agree the front end is going to take some getting used to but I did like the preview video in white. I am curious about the hip/shoulder room in the rear of the Sonata vs the competition. I had a 2012 Sonata Hybrid that I replaced (due to it being totaled in an accident) with a 2013 Avalon because the Avalon was a little larger and a little nicer, particularly with more rear seat room for a car seat and my two teens. Some interesting experiences from my ownership of these two vehicles I thought I would share. The 2012 Sonata Hybrid had 128K miles on it when it was totaled 2.5 yrs ago. I purchased a used 2013 Avalon Hybrid as the replacement (w/45K mi) and now have 118K mi on that car. The Avalon is bigger, roomier particularly in the back seat hip/shoulder area and it’s averaging 38.9 mpg lifetime vs 37.8 for the Sonata. What has surprised me though is that the Avalon’s interior has not held up nearly as well as the Sonata. The center and side arm rests are wearing out on the Avalon, the seats also show more wear and the fake chrome trim in the Avalon has started to peel, even cut my hand once. Few if any of these issues in the Sonata with 10K more miles on it so far. I can also say that while the Toyota hybrid system is a little more efficient and more powerful off the line etc, the Sonata has WAY more confidence and power passing at freeway speeds. The Sonata would drop a gear or two, engage the electric motor and engine and take off, the Avalon just spins the CVT to a higher RPM and slowly accelerates. Overall, I’d say while I love the Avalon and the more premium feel and space, I prefer the comfort, power and driving experience of the Sonata in many ways. If the new Sonata is as large in the rear seat hip/shoulder room as my Avalon, I can see making a change.
@davidnielson9139
3 жыл бұрын
The Sonata was a mid-sized car and competes directly against the Camry, the Avalon is the next size up, a full size car. The 2012 was still the first generation hybrid by Hyundai (the 2011 Sonata Hybrid was their first hybrid ever), so the Sonata was less efficient than the Toyotas (which were on about their 3rd generation hybrids). The Azera would be the Hyundai equivalent to the Avalon, but Hyundai did not make a Hybrid Azera and the car was discontinued in 2018.
Woah Alex you like HEIZE?
2021 around corner? Should we wait?
Alex, what was the passenger seat range of motion?
I like this new Sonata. The interior room, features, and style look better than the current Accord or Camry. I am curious to the fuel tank size. When Toyota & Honda redesigned to the current body styles, the fuel tank size dropped down several gallons which decreased over hybrid fuel range.
@robertstanford9177
4 жыл бұрын
My 2017 has, I believe, a 15 gallon tank and I have put 14.2 in it and had driven in the neighborhood of 560 miles.
Any news on release dates for this?
I really like the look of the Sonata. I hate the exhaust on the regular version. So, this hybrid version solves that issue. I like the look of the Camry maybe more but not enough to pay thousands more.
Heize for music. Nice
Narrower tires just means good for snow for me
Yeah! That solar panel roof only generates 2.2 mpg more for over $1,200, when you can get a panoramic sunroof for $1,000! I would get the sunroof! The solar roof is a good idea but not for the price and the low mileage difference! Also, I would get the 6-speed paddle-shift and not a CVT!
How is the transmission reliability? That is my only concern, because Toyota and Honda(ironically) single drives are bullet proof.
Wish they sold the gold paint in the states. :/
Why not a station wagon form, that shape really impinge on trunk space.
This could work well as a PHEV....hoping that's in Hyundai's plans.
Alex many thanks for your detailed and consistent reviews. I am a big fan! I like this front over the regular Sonata. Some notes on tech. Camry is lacking in infotainment and driver assistance. The 2020 Camry has TSS-P v1.0 which does not have lane centering or traffic signal recognition. Accord has very good lane centering and traffic signal recognition since 2018. But the Accord does not have 360 camera, and the content available on HUD is limited compared to Sonata. For example Sonata shows blind spot and cross traffic alerts on the HUD. Sonata has lane centering, but it is so unreliable that you will never use it. Also Camry and Accord are supported by Open Pilot, which is a $1,200 aftermarket add-on that adds Tesla Auto Pilot capability to many recent models, whereas Sonata is not. I think tech is very nuanced. Manufacturers check off a list of features, but the quality of those features can vary greatly. For example Tesla cars have rain sensing wipers, but they use camera and software to detect rain (no sensor), and so far their system is catching up to regular sensor based rain sensing. I think this is an opportunity for reviewers.
The new Optima hybrid might be the car to really look at once it gets on the road. I think the Camry has the hybrid system that best suits my more highway driving. I just dont care for its looks.
