High Key Photography

High Key Photography | IMAGE CAPTURE and LIGHTROOM EDITING
#wildlifephotography #naturephotography #highkey #photography
A tutorial on how to photograph dark subjects against a bright background. SHOOTING IN HIGH KEY. Today we are capturing the beautiful Southern carmine bee-eater.
We then take you into the Pangolin Chobe Hotel editing suite for a POST PRODUCTION lesson with Janine on ADOBE LIGHTROOM.
Please note: The first image taken on the photo boat was captured at a shutter speed of 1/1000 sec. The image chosen to edit in post production was shot at a shutter speed of 1/2000 sec.
Pangolin Photo Safaris operates in the Chobe, Northern Botswana throughout the year.
In our opinion, The Chobe National Park is the best year round wildlife photography destination in Africa - and that’s why we are based here.
All our game activities - on the Chobe River and on land within The Chobe National Park are hosted by the Pangolin Photo Hosts who feature in these films.
Whether you are a seasoned professional or absolute beginner, everyone is welcome at Pangolin Photo Safaris.

Hello everyone. Please can we ask you a favour? In an attempt to make sure that KZread is full of decent content there is a threshold that a channel must reach before they give you more exposure. This threshold sits at 1000 subscribers. All we are asking is that you take a moment to subscribe to the channel so that we can reach this milestone sooner. By doing so you will also be notified when we load new films - especially if you press the little bell button next to it to turn on email notification. Thank you Janine, a huge help to me, as I suffer from this silhouetting problem here in KZN with fairly bright sky and too much foliage to darken the bird also. I too agree, bird photography is not quite the same with too much grain and in black and white, birds as a subject, like butterflies are enhanced and captured for their colour.

Well, I just discovered your channel and I love it. Thank you for not being what I call "Photography snobs" . I have been out of photography for a while and have recently decided to get back into it. Your instructions and explanations on why you take a shot the way you do is very helpful. Also, the post production work in Light Room is REALLY helpful to me. Thank You!

I just happened upon your video on high key photography. Really enjoyed your explanations and am looking forward to trying this out or even perhaps going back to my library for photos that may not have turned out the way I'd hoped and seeing if high key processing might save the image!

Hello Janine, I enjoyed viewing your video and especially the post processing of the subject. I will appreciate being informed what metering mode to use whilst photographing a bird 1) when it is perched on a branch and 2) when in flight. Does metering also depend on whether shooting against the light or with the light ? I shoot Nikon D750 and D500 and use the Nikon 500 mm F5.6 E PF and Nikon 70-200 f2.8. Thanking you in advance for your inputs.

The grain comes from the fast shutter speed, not the high ISO

Hi, yes spot metering would have worked too. But the ISO would have been identical as the light needs to come from somewhere!

Way too much work editing. Try using a filter on the lens then bringing the shadow on the bird up in editing. One more point, when you overexpose in such bright conditions you can loose detail on the actual bird as it can have light reflection on it's feathers, beak, eyes. Which means you can loose detail that is not recoverable even in editing on the part of the image you want.
