High Idle Feature T1N Sprinter

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I don't recommend installing this High Idle Feature or function. It is just an invitation to trouble for most folks, at least it is for me. You'll need to watch the video to the end to know why.

Thanks Bill. Thanks for your wisdom at the end too. Make sense?

Okay Bill you got me deeply concerned about idle time now. I work out of my van doing U-Haul roadside assistance calls and whenever I'm on scene I let it run for 3 reasons, never know when the starter is going to go out, never know when the battery might take a dump, and to run all my warning lights. Maybe at most 45 minutes. Do you foresee this being a problem?

Yes. Keep a close eye on your aux water pump at the firewall under brake booster. When it fails in cold weather your issues may cascade. If you have a water cooled EGR (North American 2004-2006) EGR failure is far more likely than battery failure or starter. I've NEVER needed to replace a Sprinter starter. Driven my own 2 vans over 1 million miles and worked on over a hundred others, not one starter problem. I have read of them and know they are real***, but not common at all with our T1N Sprinters. Battery is just a maintenance problem and you should know when your battery is going bad. Unable to start one cold morning is one thing. Unable to start an hour after shutting off is entirely something else. Warning lights should probably be run on a second battery with battery isolator.

Regarding your comments at the end, isn't moving up to 2000 RPM, and thus no longer "idling," solving those issues? Or is it that the engine needs to be at those RPM and under significant load (more than charging a house battery) to solve those issues? It seems to me that your concerns are exactly why you would install a high-idle kit.

Raising the idle without adding a load is still "idle", just a higher idle. It still presents all but one of the troubles with extended idle, and faster!

I believe grounding pin 8 is the answer to your question. Did you watch the video?

why would you use a high idle feature?

I don't recommend it. The service manual says it is for brief use of high current electrical accessories like wheelchair lifts and Tommy-Lift cargo handlers. I avoid idling over 20 minutes, high idle or not.
