Wow. Hold on, give me a second... I need to relax after this one.
This was crazy difficult. Not only was it just difficult note-wise, but the rhythms were ridiculous too. It was loads of fun though!
I started working on this in June. I did take July and August off while I was away for the summer, but all in all this is the product of a little less than 4 months of work.
There are 8 voices that you don't see, but that's just because I couldn't fit them on screen. 4 baritone voices and 4 tenor voices do not have videos to go along with them, but there aren't any splits in those parts so I don't think that matters that much. There are 7 voice parts in all, plus the Soprano solo.
I'll admit, I did cheat a little bit with the bass 2 part... I wasn't planning on doing this song because of how low the bass part was. But one day (and singers will know what I mean) I woke up and for some reason I just wasn't getting the high notes I usually do... but my range compensated by giving me ridiculous low notes... so I learned the bass part and took everything from there... believe me, I don't normally have the low C's and D's that I sing in the video.
The solo at the end is the top left box, the one wearing a bowtie. My soloists wear bowties now, bowties are cool.
It would be awesome if you all would tweet this video to @ImogenHeap

Are people really calling the original version lazy? Imogen didn't just sing into a mic and it sound like that. She used a vocoder (connected to a midi keyboard controller) and played each note that she wanted in the harmonies while singing. She dictated which notes would be played and her voice was the input so she had to continually sing or the entire thing would stop making sound. Her version took a lot of practice (probably as much as this version). Both of these are incredible but created in totally different ways.

razrv3lc Actually I've written midi controllers to do this effect live and it is basically as easy as singing the part solo except that you can't really do flourishes because it goes through every track and sounds really bizarre. So no this is way harder - unless you count writing the song in the first place. But that takes the cake. XD

+Erik Seastead Writing a song like this is a lot harder than actually singing it. If you look into the history of it, you can see she practically poured her heart and soul into it. To say that this video was a lot harder to make is a huge overstatement. It's not the voice but the words that count. Sure, it must of been hard for Dan, but Imogen had the true load.

This is a great example of how youtube used to be before it was a big business for content producers. People with great but also funny or weird ideas who create unique content with their passion and dedication. Obviously times change. But I felt a bit nostalgic to how youtube used to be hearing this.

I read the description and he said this took him 4 months I cant imagine how difficult it was to record and then link up the separate footage bit by bit. Also, his range. Also pay attention to the amazing low notes. I wounder how long it took imogen heap to do the same thing- only she WROTE each melody and then synchronized it herself as an original song. And then jason derulo made a shit-ton of money with her amazing melody while she gets little to no recognition.

If you're up for it, I'd like to see what it would look like if each one of your voices is colored as per the algorithm. Would it be possible to get the source material for this, so I could try applying it and see what it looks like? You can see examples of ColorChord on my channel or by youtubing "colorchord"

There are some people who are truly synestehetic, or chromosthetic. Typically, the colors they see are are very vivid to them, and unique to them as well. The system I wrote typically doesn't line up that well. I would be extremely interested in hearing her input, and I am VERY curious what colors she would see, AND I would also be interested in seeing if I could write software to match her colors. Send her on over to some of the ColorChord videos I posted.
