    Totally unrecognisable 😪 don't get me wrong it needed it because it was old fashioned. But I loved Abingdon Street Market the smell as you walked in was just amazing. I remember it being packed and the butcher right at the front door. My Mum would always get a handbag at the leather stall, I would get some sweeties at the sweet stall which was amazing! But in all fairness Blackpool needs this, it needs to come into the 21st Century which it never has but now it is. Brilliant video as always 😊

    My 4th great grandfather George Morrison 1817-1869 was Blackpool's first Police Sergeant and would have been based there before he passed away. He is buried outside St John's and is mentioned on the memorial stone at the side of the church. Great to see the back of the original police building.

    What a great old building! glad to see it repurposed rather than torn down. Maybe they filled the cells in because there was such bad cell reception? 8^) sorry for worst pun ever.... cheers!

    Whoever has taken on the project must have deep pockets. Whilst every market hall I've been to has been a really pleasurable experience, over the years there's been noticeably fewer and fewer younger people using them. As people have commented, markets are practically the soul of their town or city but unless the internet addicted younger shoppers of today can be tempted to visit and are socially-minded enough to keep going back to enjoy them, these wonderful places will die a slow death.

    Cheers for a great video mate. It's a shame about those old cells though i may have an idea why they backfilled. Especially if the cells or basement extended out under sidewalks. There may be or have been plans that included streets or even significant weight being on or near them. Another is that additionally there may have been access extending beyond the building itself for utilities which have been moved. So they decided to fill the void to prevent say a heavy lorry from pulling over slightly and sinking or falling in. As to why they backfilled the entire basement not just a now unnecessary void. That seems most likely to increase the structural integrity down the road and avoid foundation issues. The type of backfill makes a difference however anything is a serious issue were you to need access to the foundation. To add that imposition to future access should indicate a very solid belief the building sound and repairs unforseen for a very long time.

    Grrrr 🤬 back filling relics yet again. This looks like it was a massive station, lots of bad uns in Blackpool hey 😂 I love the old police station “ghost sign” with the light, I love ghost signs from old businesses etc, they’re a bit of a fancy of mine. When I used to be on FB I was in a group called “ghost signs from bygone times”. My job gets me all over the country and I used to post them loads 😂 Back to police… In Leyland we have 2 old police stations, complete with their stone signs still up and intact. One was a cocktail bar thing until recently and you could go down into the old cells, which we did after a few shandy’s 😂

    Hola Darren, I take it this was filmed before your GC trip. Have you got the booking to be the first act on the stage yet 👍 Talking about roof trusses did you open the link l sent you about the Sedge Lyne Wetherspoons pub in Chorlton as the doomed roof has internal buttresses and side to side strengthening bars. The heating came up from the cellar via large 'drum' warm air outlets rather than radiators. Anyways enjoyed today's trip to B/pool again. Cheers DougT

    I'm sure that if they hadn't of started that refurbishment when they did that some of the evicted stall holders from bonny st market would have taken on the vacant spaces which would've meant more unneeded food outlets being built. This will just cause other cafes/food outlets in the town to close down making the area look more derelict/run down.

  • @ianfrench1577
    @ianfrench15778 ай бұрын

    I don't like it. The clowncil has sapped all the life, soul and character out of the building. It now feels almost clinical in places. It's no longer a working class place to buy bargains. There's nothing for the pensioners and good luck trying to get a pensioner to clamber over the bench seating or on a high stool if they have a dodgy hip ( a moron designed this with zero thought given for consequence, nor convenience ). No charm of an honest and comfortable greasy spoon cafe. Now that it is more open, it feels colder. The seats are uncomfortable with no backrests. The food is twice the price. It's catered for the hipsters, and as a working class guy I feel like it has alienated me. I don't know where the original stallholders have moved to, but I feel sorry for them. I wish I knew where they are now. If this is classed as 'moving with the times', then I think the replacement is of a lesser calibre, not a better one.
