Many foreigners think that it is the residents of Christiania who sell hashish. But it is criminal gangs from outside who sell. The residents have asked the police for help in removing the criminals. At the same time, they themselves have started to dismantle the street (Pusher Street), by picking up the stones. A double penalty has been introduced if you commit a drug-related crime in and around Christiania.

In the old days 30-40 years ago, the selling of Cannabis was not controlled by organized crime gangs like it is today. The main reason this is generally accepted today is that the authorities prefer this to stay mostly in Christiania. If you close it down, it will spread out to various locations around Copenhagen. However, the police makes a point of raiding the place now and then to make sure these morons don't start to take things for granted. I was in Christiania with my parents in 1971 a few days after it had been taken over by the hippies. Today, the original inhabitants of Christiania have given up controlling the selling of drugs there so they actually rely on the police coming around and raiding the place now and then. Today, the drug trade in Christiania is controlled by organized crime gangs whether this being the so-called biker gangs or other type of criminal gangs. They virtually never bother ordinary citizens. At the end of the day, these criminals are cowards. They know that if they start to interfere with the daily lives of ordinary Danes, they will simply vote in a government that will get medieval of these crime gangs. They know they would lose that fight eventually so they keep their distance and keep the violence among themselves.
