HH44: OC v. SC models explained (Episode 5)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The all new HH Catamarans HH44 is a ground breaking yacht offered in two versions: Ocean Cruising (OC) and Sports Cruising (SC). In this video we hear from Paul Hakes (CEO & Co-Founder of HH) and James Hakes (HH Naval Architect) on how they and the team at HH Catamarans envisioned the differences between these two models.
UPDATE: Since the recording of this episode we have renamed the "HH" version the "SC" (Sports Cruising) version to better explain the key features of the sportier model. Meanwhile the "OC" (Ocean Cruising) version could be described as an easy to handle, owner/operator style boat that still offers plenty of performance for enjoyable world cruising.

    The way you two communicate and respond with each other it's as if you're father & son. It's a very natural delivery and feels so honest. I really enjoy your chats. I can't afford any new catamaran but I can dream because I think at 68 it is too late for me. I am glad to see straight drives and not sail drives on both boats. So much safer. ** One Question: Why have trampolines on a boat? I see the Bali 4.5 has no trampoline and uses it for forward lounging space.

  • @HHCatamarans

    @HHCatamarans

    Жыл бұрын

    The trampolines are a good indicator of how performance oriented (versus houseboat oriented) the catamaran is. The more you build forward of the mast, the wider the hulls must be to float the weight, and the slower and less performing the boat will be. If you see a big trampoline, then the bows are long and lightweight and efficient in shape. Hope that helps!

    Great explanation Paul and James. Such a beautiful design. Question: can the winged keels on the OC support the weight of the boat when on the hard? Can it be beached? Have you quantified the extent of the improved pointing ability with the SC? Many thanks... Ben.

  • @HHCatamarans

    @HHCatamarans

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question Ben. No, these keels simulate having two daggerboards partially dropped, so they are very narrow and are not load bearing. We have run VPP analysis on the OC and SC boats and will email you a comparison. Hope all is well cruising in Indo. ~Seth

    Good question! The base HH44 has a Lightships Displacement of 8750 kg and a Heavy Displacement Max Load of 13,500 kg. So that gives us the ability to add 4,750 kg (or 10,472 lbs) to the boat without exceeding the boat's design parameters.

    A question about sailing ability and stability. Sailing experts (I'm not) say that carbon yachts/catamarans don't sit "in" the water but "on" it. The reason being is that they are so lite that, in rough weather, one is thrown around more than in a heavier boat. Is there some truth to this, and again, if so, do you use extra ballast to find the balance between stability and cruising speed? Thanks

  • @HHCatamarans

    @HHCatamarans

    Жыл бұрын

    A purebred race boat certainly does sit on the water, but these are Cruising Boats with closing cabinetry, lots of refrigeration, plush finishes, loads of solar and other items that bring the displacement similar to other fiberglass boats. Cruising on an HH Catamaran is about as comfortable as you can get.

    Looking forward to #1 hitting the water. I hope you are going to mock up that helm station and try it out. I've never seen a situation you had to reach over your instruments and throttles to get to the winches. Even if you got ultra-low profile throttles (or quasi flush mount), you are going to be pulling a lot of line over that instrument panel.

    do you use only epoxy or do you use vinyl ester?

  • @HHCatamarans

    @HHCatamarans

    Жыл бұрын

    Technically our boats are all 100% epoxy infused but we do add a barrier outside skin layer using vinylester to act as an anti-osmotic barrier on top of the super rigid epoxy infused hull. Our paint is then a two part marine polyurethanes which further protects. The female molded hull & deck is built using our in-house 18m 5 axis CNC router for dimensional accuracy to within +/-1.0mm and is also epoxy infused E-glass sandwich construction. There are no corners cut on any HH Catamaran, including our OC models.

    @@HHCatamarans Could you clarify why you would need to use an outsider layer of vinyl ester barrier coat if your boats are all epoxy which is the superior material? This would make sense to me if you were using polyester like Outremer does, but I've not heard of putting vinyl ester over a 100% epoxy catamaran. Thanks!
