HH 17th Karmapa's Return to Tsurphu Monastery 1992
The Gyalwa Karmapas were the first of the incarnate lamas of Tibetan Buddhism to be recognized as reincarnations and are known to be among the greatest, spiritually realized masters of Tibet. The Karmapas vowed to come back for twenty-one incarnations in order to relieve the suffering of the world.
From the first Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa, who lived during the 12th century, to the 17th Karmapa, born in 1985, each successive Karmapa has predicted his reincarnation by leaving behind a letter, where the parents' names, his place of birth and other pertinent information are accurately foretold.
The monastery of Tsurphu has been the home of all his predecessors and was totally destroyed in the Chinese Cultural Revolution. It has now been partially restored.
This is an excellent video documentary about the auspicious arrival of H.H the 17th Karmapa, at his main seat Tsurphu. Also included is the Hair-Cutting ceremony that took place in the Jokhang in Lhasa. The main feature is the Enthronement of this child incarnate which empowers him fully with the role of the new Karmapa who is destined to become one of the greatest living saints of our time.

I will reply that he was indeed 'recognized' by the Chinese government as the 17th Karmapa, but I cannot be so sure to say if he was 'chosen by the Chinese Government' as many of us don't know the true details and never will. One have to judge and decide for oneself. For only the true Karmapa can give the most perfect teachings and his Dharma activities always flourishes.

Karmapa is actually not born on June 26th as it is officially published - there was a mistake in the transmission of the dates to Dharamsala when he was found. Concerning the "2 Karmapas" There is only 1 Black Hat Karmapa - and his seat is always Tsurphu. So this one is the true 17th Karmapa - also due to the (supposedly, but not truly rivaling) 14th Shamarpa. The other one is currently the Vidjadhara of the Karma Kagyu Lineage, the lineage holder (due to the 14th Shamarpa), so he is (someone like) a Red Hat Karmapa - like Shamarpa himself. Both "Karmapas" will meet and settle the situation accordingly, when the conditions are there (probably soon, still in this Dragon🐉Year). This is it, this information could eliminate the unclarity
