I don't disagree when you say that he doesn't have a lot of flaws & doesn't really change over the course of the series, but I think that works when you consider the other characters that he's surrounded with. As far as my favorite Arnold moment, here are a few (in no particular order): 1) The tango with Helga (because that was a different side of Arnold); 2) Parents Day & The Journal (same reason); 3) -Eugene: "Uh, actually it's my turn to drive.". -Arnold: "Uh, no." (same reason); 4) "Stinky, shut up." (same reason); 5) Reuniting with his parents; 6) Kissing Helga

    1. Arnold really takes much from his parents. His open mindedness is really rooted from their experiences dealing with a lot of cultures and people. Of course, dealing with the occupants of the boarding house also strengthen it. His relentless persistence is definitely from his dad while the caring aspect is from his mom. 2. As much as Arnold believes that people are not always what they appear to be, considering that he helped many people, he does forget his own advice. This is true particularly in Ruth and Lila. He was seeking for people who are similar to him (altruistic and open), but realized that they are not really what he thinks of them, Lila in particular. Still, Im happy that his belief not only lead him to the right girl, but made her realize who she really is.

It's amazing how Arnold took after his parents without even meeting them. Good point, Arnold did not take his own advice sometimes. He was driven by his emotions when it came to girls. Exactly, Arnold failed to follow his advice when it came to Lila and Ruth, but when he did use his advice he was able to see through Helga.

@@DialUpDigest Arnold Shortman and Gerald Johannson are like the Kid version of Andy Dufresne and Ellis Redding. Like Andy in Shawshank Redemption, Arnold is Enigmatic, often at times Stoic, a bit introverted, but incredibly adroit and simple minded. Much Like Andy, Arnold is difficult to read. Helga believes in her Yandere obsession and relationship with Arnold that she knows everything about him, but in reality, there's layers of Arnold even SHE can't grasp. Its not just his Parent's being AWOL, its the Lessons his Grandparents instill in him as well as his Interaction with the other Roomies. Gerald is like Red. He just goes with flow, follows life wherever it takes him and rolls with its punches. Also like Red, he is INCREDIBLY, Mature wise and humble. Arnold Intrigues and Fascinates Gerald the SAME way Andy piqued Red's Interest. Throughout Shawshank Redemption, Red Studies Andy, but can't figure him out, its the same thing with Gerald. Gerald often calls him "Bold" and "Whimsical". When you study the contrast between Arnold Shortman and Gerald Johannson, you can see the dynamics as well as who EACH of their GFs end up being revealed as. Of Course, it was inevitable that Helga Pataki even though her own Zeal would STILL end up winning Arnold's heart. Fate was going to make it happen regardless and as you watch each of its most important Seasons 1-4(1996-1999) you can obviously see it. When I was watching its first few seasons(I'm in the EXACT same Age group as majority of the main Cast voice actors, Xennial just like they are) I KNEW even as early as '97, that Pheobe Heyerdahl would end up falling for Gerald. She's the Cartoon Animated Equalivent to Kathy from the Wayside School Books.(Even is an Asian Girl fancying a Black Kid much like Kathy Fancies DJ) But in a Way, Pheobe is Gifted, No Nonsense but often finds herself back in tight spots between conforming or compromising her own principles. I think what Attracts her to Gerald is that he's more free flowing and doesn't get bothered by Conformity. That's certainly what causes Pheobe to fancy Gerald. There's also a Fascinating Dynamic to Why Helga and Pheobe are BFFs. Helga is somewhat of a Hapless Romantic and Dreamer, while Pheobe is Pure Conformist. Highly Intelligent, but wanting to bend the rules even when she doesn't want to.

Decent video, you covered a lot, but as for Arnold's flaws, I'm really surprised you omitted how he tried to fill the void in him by fixing everyone's problems--and would even force himself onto them, despite their wishing he'd stop (Eugene's Birthday) or that he was SO desperate for things to be fixed, he subjected himself to public humiliation for Iggys forgiveness--which is completely on Arnold, and instead of learning a lesson from it, he NEVER forgives Iggy. In addition to that, Arnold does have an aggressive side that Helga has brought out--jumping down her throat unprovoked about how much he can't stand her and would rather be with anyone else as egg-caring partners, retaliating against her by throwing back paint, and rather notably, the intense anger and physical roughness he had with her during the April Fools Dance (mixed in with his own flirting, according to the creator) You can also argue that by and large though, later seasons Arnold is more mature than his earlier season counterparts, and that is a sign of growth. And, him having some problematic areas that aren't fixed or learned from helps prevent him from being perfect. Just my piece

True, in real life, this would never be allowed - Arnold was only 9 and couldn't legally work, maybe with parental consent though. And he was doing Oskar's job which would be against an employment contract.

Yet Oskar’s boss at first thought Arnold was the one who applied for the job and considered Oskar too old for the job. In real life when I worked at ages 15 to 17 I remember I had to fill out paperwork and get a parent or guardian to sign. The grownups also used it to determine whether or not I need a physical to be eligible to work.

Oskar constantly came up with excuses for not delivering the newspapers, and had Arnold deliver them for him (first the stomach flu and then his aching back). Arnold caught Oskar lying to him, and everyone else thinks Oskar will never change. After hearing Arnold and Susie (Oskar's wife) complain about him, Oskar decides to prove to everyone that he can do his job.

The episode where I was impressed with Arnold optimistic view was the episode Crabby Author, where he had to write a book report about the author he admired, until he realized the author grow up to be a bitter old lady. But regardless Arnold still come to her house because he loved the books she wrote. And that scene in the classroom where even though Arnold has a bad experience with the author, he still wrote his book report about her and the classes reaction to his report is what got me mainly because they wouldn't expect such a sad and depressing report from a person like Arnold who usually optimistic. Also Gernald line thag I don't remember correctly but I think he said "sometimes you can't help everyone" I love this episode mainly because regardless on how Arnold optimistic is tested he still believe the good in people even if those people don't believe it themselves.

Tons of good things I can say about Arnold that i can write a book about him. And that's just the first 9 years of the kids life. Sure Arnold has tendency to get involved when he shouldn't but he can't help it. Look at what the kid has accomplished. He helped mr H reunite with his daughter after so many years. Helped Torvald get better at doing math, even though he's still shaking down kids for cash. Gotten his grandfather and aunt to fix their sibling bond. And even helped his honorary uncle Ernie get a girlfriend. Just wish at times he would find ways to help himself. Though I did like when he went crazy against Harold. People say that Arnold & his parents moving to San Lorenzo would be good for Helga (& rightfully so), but it'd also be good for Arnold. Everyone in the "Hey Arnold!" universe needs to learn how to solve their problems without him. Arnold needs to learn that he can't be everything for everybody (especially Helga), & that there are times where you need to be a little more selfish & put yourself first. Lastly, Arnold & Helga need to reach the point where their feelings for each other are on an equal level (as well as a healthier one, in Helga's case).

Good points, everyone in Hillwood was way too reliant on Arnold. They lacked problem-solving skills. Arnold was very self-less, but I think he needed to be a little more selfish too. True, Arnold and Helga's feelings for each other did not seem to start off on an equal level. Hopefully as time progressed, the relationship would become a healthy one.
