Jay, the word you were looking for is "soul". These older cars have soul and a personality. New cars are basically appliances. You'll note that the Shelby has no power steering, and no power brakes, even with disc brakes. You had road feel in the steering and a brake pedal feel that allowed a good driver to be the antilock brake system. very good presentation, and I love the outtakes at the end! It shows that you strive to put out a good quality video.

A side note: My second car was a 68 Mustang GT fastback with 390 and 4 speed. Bought it when I was 16, and the car was 2 years old. Never crashed it, but, boy, did I accumulate speeding tickets in it!

The outtakes are really funny I stumbled over words like you can’t believe you guys only get to see the finished product. You don’t see all the stuff going up to it and in a lot of ways like you could tell where things have been cut because I can’t make my voice sound the same as where I’ve screwed up a lot of it is spice together maybe one day I’ll make a video on how I make these videos. I had a friend who wanted to watch me make one of these videos. This is really not that Interesting it is very boring process You know, I love cars with great stories. Glad you dig this episode. Great choices.

Also, thank you so much for sharing your 68 fastback with us. I wanted a fastback, but I was happy with the coupe fastbacks were unobtainable at that point they are still unattainable now for me, but one day I would love to have one and I don’t care if it’s a six cylinder I’ll put triple Weber side carburetors on it make it a hot running six with a big cam. My Mustang overheated a lot I put two or three radiators in that car and I could only drive it 2025 miles before it would get too hot to drive it before the sourcing the aluminum radiator I could find and then I didn’t have any more heating issues . Mine would get so hot that you could feel almost like your soul of your shoe was melting to the gas pedal, but it was only down inside the pedalbox. The heat wasn’t up above, if that makes any sense with all the windows down it circulated through there, pretty good, except in the Pedal box. Mine did not have vents, for some reason

My dad worked for Gulf for decades and as such we bought gas at the local Gulf station. The owner had 2 adult sons, the younger having recently been discharged from the Army in 1969 used his money to buy a 1966 GT350H. Excellent condition and he kept it that way for years. The family got interested in Shelby Mustangs and bought another 1966, 2 67 GT500’s and a 68 GT500. I worked there in the summers in high school and college. I had the chance to drive the 66 GT350 and the 67 GT500 with dual quads. The 65 and 66 GT350’s were as Shelby intended, noisy and powerful, almost brutal. From 67 on they were a bit more refined and air conditioning was available. Today’s cars are much more powerful and refined, quieter, with conveniences like air conditioning and power everything. Driving the early Shelby Mustangs in the heat of the summer was an experience, but rewarding.

Thank you Mark for sharing that memory what a great story I wonder if the family still has those cars Mine wasn’t a number matching car. It had a 351 Windsor in it was punched out with flat top pistons FMX automatic behind it but you could shift it manually if you wanted to you could hold first gear to 60 miles an hour in that car it was only good for 110 but 110 in the car that you can’t stop very well good enough. lol I remember really hot days. Mine didn’t have the vents in the foot well I don’t know if the previous owner just got rid of them but mine didn’t have that. In the summertime it got so hot in there that it felt like your foot was literally going to melt to the gas pedal. Especially when you were stopped in traffic if you kept it moving with all the windows down, vent windows open, it was very comfortable.

This particular example is extremely well done as a “Tribute” creation. I’m glad to see the prior owners have achieved nearly 170,000 miles of enjoyment from it instead of being relegated to “Trailer Queen” status, with mirrors under the chassis at car shows, as most original “low mileage” GT-350s are. After all, the car was made for driving enjoyment in the first place. My one objection is that they should have gone with the “flat” (not shiny) “wood” steering wheel with the metallic lining that I believe was the steering wheel in actual Shelby Mustang GT-350s.

Great Episode 👍 Useless Trivia In Dallas Shelby had a shop putting Chevy 8 265 ci engines in Austin Healy out of his own pocket ..But Austin would not sell body shells he sold less than 5 😢. My uncle test drove one 🤔 good but expensive 🤷 40 Fords and model T and A where cheap and plentiful .. Austin Healy lost out and Ford's Cobra 🐍 Legend was born 👏👏👏 Hertz caught on to the engine swap 😂 My Uncle said people would rent the car during the week and swap the suspension and steering boxes out of base car's 😂 bubba could build a Engine but handling was a different story 😂 Enjoy your day and Happy Motoring ✌️🤠

WYR total toss up between the Vette and the GT 350, 1966 GT 350H all the way! Many, many years ago I had the chance to buy a 65 GT350 for 10K. In discussing it with my dad he said, "A couple grand cheaper, it would probably be worth it". Couldn't get the guy to budge and the rest is history......😢. The outtakes are hilarious, thanks for all the extra effort you put into getting it right. And, even though this is a clone, the story is so compelling, I'm glad you told it. ~ Chuck

The father of a close friend owned a 1965 Mustang notchback which he kept for 13 years, til 1978. Today I know someone else with a 1965 Mustang fastback who lives right across from me. He just stores the car in his Garage , and very seldomly takes it for a drive. My cars of choice here would be the 1966 Charger because it looks a lot like the Marlin. I would also go with the 2016 Mustang because I like the newer American cars, but like the old ones for different reasons. As I'm not a performance buff I would go with base engine in both cases.

Great choices I would probably take the marlin over the charger only because it’s different and if you don’t know me by now I love different cars. It’s an absolute shame that he doesn’t drive it. What’s the point of having a car if you don’t drive it .. when it breaks fix it that’s what keeps parts in demand without demand no reason to supply the parts. I have a friend who has a 67 Mustang fastback 390 car and I just ran into them the other day and they said it’s been sitting in their garage since the last time we saw each other and that was at least five years ago absolute pity

Car Trivia: James Garner drove most of the chase scenes in the Rockford Files himself instead of using a stunt driver as the directors and studio people had originally planned. He gave them a quick demo of his driving skills and then they let him go ahead. They originally wanted 'Rockford' to use a 6- cylinder car, but he checked with the property folks and conned them and the director into letting him swap to a 350ci Firebird 4bbl which was the hottest car they had on the lot at the moment.

Hi Jay! MUSTANG! The original pony car! Beautiful and functional, too! You can say what you want about the SBC, but those little Windsor engines were GREAT engines! Very reliable! Caroll Shelby made the Mustang come alive! They were very popular and successful race cars. WYR's. . .well, I'm embarrassed, but even though I am a Ford guy, I ALWAYS wanted a Corvette Sting Ray. #2 1966 GT350H, of course!! The 2016 one is not that good looking, and I have a 2006 Mustang myself, just not nearly as much horsepower, but pretty much the same car. Probably my favorite car that I have owned, even though it is a 6.

I was a Ford guy for a while that’s all I had and I think it’s because that’s what my grandpa liked as a brand but I will say if I’m building a vehicle, I would rather build a Chevy because all the parts are change like transmissions up to engines you don’t have to find the specific transmission engine combo Which makes building things a whole lot easier.. 50s Ford had two different transmission types, air cold and water cooled with three different transmission tail shafts. They had three different case sizes it gets complicated. You have to put the same exact thing that came off unless you wanna make a whole bunch of modifications Chevy doesn’t have that problem. But I love Mustang I want to have a 66 or 67 fastback in the collection one day those are my two favorite e Years when I had my 67 I almost bought a 2007 to have a old one and a new one but I never pulled the trigger on it. I didn’t want a car payment at that point. Great choices

I’m going to do a video on what it’s like to own a car because it’s a different experience especially if you’ve never owned a Classic Car .. when someone sees a Classic broke down on the side of the road odds are they will stop and help. Great video on a very cool car replica or not. Wow how things have changed with time and I agree with you the 60’s pony cars and muscle cars may have been slower and less powerful but they were more fun with no driving aids (nanny’s) to dampen the experience, the cars were lighter and looked better IMO. Just to show you how things have changed in 1980 I bought a convertible mustang from the original owner with all the goodie’s from the custom interior package with the tachometer to the k code (hipo) 289 & 4 speed I paid $ 1500 as the lady was in a hurry to sell it had about 80k miles and was in great shape in 82 I picked up a convertible 4 speed 400 firebird for a $1000 and in 84 I bought a 66 formula S barracuda from the original owner for a $ 1000 that car was immaculate with 50k on it always garaged etc but those were the days of $1.00 per gallon gas that was considered expensive and you could pick up muscle cars all day on the cheap, harald lemay of lemay car museum and Bucky Austin of Austin racing plus other offered me whatever my price was for the barracuda oh the good old days before the rich guys started looking at cars as investments and ruined the hobby for us car lovers. For the WYR I’ll take the vete and the charger, as far as I’m concerned the chargers grill and interior or one the most beautiful designs ever especially the 66’s interior and I’d like to rent the 2016 mustang and find the top speed on it for myself 👍Thanks Jay keep them coming

Thank you so much for sharing all of those cars that you bought on the cheap. You can still find deals on cars not the whole hobby isn’t about rich blowhards ( as a really good friend of mine put it ).. the pre-war cars are coming down in price because a lot of people that love those cars are moving on they’re passing on, so it’s only a matter of time before people like me can afford those, but the flipside is we live in a world where the simple stuff is complicated to those who don’t have computers that tell them exactly what’s wrong with the car. My 67 I bought it in 2010 I was 21 years old. I paid $5000 for that car. It wasn’t a number matching car. It had an engine from a Ford bronco transmission from somewhere else you could shift it manually if you wanted to the coolest thing about it was, you could hit 60 miles an hour in first gear cause it was only a three speed , when you shifted it to second gear which was only good for about 80 it had a really tall first gear, but it accelerated really fast if you drove it like that if you drove it the way that they wanted you to drive it. It was not fast. It was a dog And it wouldn’t hook up right and just spin the tires. Met my wife I’ve been looking for a new Honda van in the car market is just insane in 2020 before Covid and Market craziness you could get the van that I’m looking for for about $6500 with 100,000 miles all day long that same van is double the price now but I can’t see spending double the money because we’re in a bubble . And once the bubble burst, I’m going to be out that money that I don’t want to eat. Great choices happy you dig this episode I try to stay away from the mainstream cars they don’t do as well in my channel as the eyeball cars but I really like mustangs and I wanted to tell the story there’s another Mustang story that I really want to tell but I’m not entirely sure when that’s going to be I know somebody that has a T5 which were the cars that went to Germany. His dad owned a Ford dealership that he owns now and this car came back to America and he has all the documentation of this car with his dad‘s signature on it signing it. It’s just a really cool story.

I have tons of pictures of it. I was in the photography so I took a lot of pictures of it. Still have a lot of them. By the end of my Mustang ownership, I knew just about every tow truck driver in the vicinity by first name , it kept sharing off pins at the bottom of the distributor and every time I took it to a mechanic it would run for maybe 7 miles and as soon as I got on it, it would break again it turned out it needed a new distributor, but somebody told me that I needed to put a new engine in it and I said I just had this engine done. It runs fine until you go to get on it the last time I broke down it was a horrific thunderstorm and I got fed up and just said I’m gonna sell this car. I’m gonna sell my Honda and I’m gonna buy a new car that was the worst decision I ever ever made… New cars are not worth what they sell them for. That’s why they depreciate so fast but I was 25 and I hadnt learned that lesson. Sometimes I miss my Mustang but there’s more cars out there that I would love to have. I had this conversation with my friend Shelly the other day and said if I have $5000 to buy another Classic Car I don’t know if I would buy a Mustang I think I would buy a Nash Metropolitan, I really kind of sort of want one of those or a silver hawk but I really want to buy at least one Classic Car every year and do a long-term review on it drive it compare it with other stuff I really want to do that with the metropolitan this year, but I don’t know Money doesn’t go nearly as far as it used to

Just remount the upper inner A-frame 3/4" lower, reset the camber to stock specs, and add a 3/4" sway bar from a big-block car and these Mustangs are race-ready. Not quite as effective with radial tires but worked great for the bias-ply tires of the era. Drum brakes really let the car down so most switched to discs eventually or added that option when it became available.

@@P_RO_ With the front springs mounted on top of the upper control arm made the cars tipsy. Sway bars were a definite plus, adding them to the rear axle really helped. The GT350H's also had an added frame cross member. I prefer disc brakes but the original Shelby's used metallic linings on their drum brakes. They stopped quite nicely without fade.

@@automatedelectronics6062The only problem with mounting the springs above the top A-arm was upper body flex which was cured by the "Monte-Carlo" brace between the shock towers. Just like a more normal spring-between-A-arm setup you had two rubber bushings and a ball joint on the upper A-arm, so both essentially act the same. The one place where there might have been a problem was the inner bushing of the lower suspension arm which being single versus having two bushings did compress/ unload more on sideways forces. Also it's locator rod bush if worn (which few were ever replaced) introduced caster changes under hard braking. Most people who criticized the front end simply did not understand the system which did aid overall car lightness as intended by eliminating the separate front subframe other cars used. Many Fords had it for many years which wouldn't have happened if it was as deeply flawed as some claim. The main performance issue was the shock towers limiting installed engine width. Full metallic brake shoes did work better but also wore drums quicker. They did fade, but only at a higher threshold versus organic shoes. Top stuff initially and proven in stock car racing, but discs and their better cooling were about to take over the game so that's what people did later on.
