I'm impressed how much you were able to pick up on in the video, remembering that story from the Peter video and everything else. Unfortunately, that story wasn't unique. In the early 1900's Saturday was a regular workday like any other day and it was a terrible struggle for Jews who wanted to remain committed to religion to keep shabbos. Sadly many couldn't withstand the challenge and capitulated, giving up their commitment to Judaism. The words of the song were a message from the Munkatcher Rebbe in Europe when given an opportunity to give over a message to television. Knowing of the struggle of American Jewry he gave over the message, "Jews in America, Keep Shabbos and everything will be good"

I would like to add that many people in fact went to shul early before going to work and did NOT give up their religion. I've heard from oldtimers that in many areas (eg Lower East Side,) the "early minyan" on shabbos morning was made so that the men could daven before going to work. Unfortunately, it certainly is correct that most (many?) of THEIR children did not want to hold on to the religion. But it wasn't a simple "stay in the religion or go to work". Shuls and shteiblich were filled with people who also worked on Shabbos. Also, there were stories of people who got fired every week and found new jobs the next week, but in reality this was extremely rare (the entire idea that there were hundreds or even tens of people in the same area all trading jobs every week doesn't make sense). There were a few such people, but generally, most people who were in such jobs worked on Saturday and did the best they could --- at least if it was happening weekly. (I am not judging them of course, just pointing out that I've seen some people say that quitting or being/fired every week was prototypical behavior, and it doesn't appear that that was the case. People needed to eat, and quitting/being fired from your job every week was not something that most people could do.) Of course there were plenty of people who were in jobs where they did not have to violate Shabbos routinely, who would get fired when the boss wanted to make them work on Saturday. It's this idea (which was in the Peter video) that it was COMMON for Orthodox Jews to be fired every week or every couple of weeks ------ that appears to be mythology. No, most people, even people who were otherwise Frum, couldn't do that ---- in those days, if you didn't pay your rent, you froze on the street. This is what I've been told, if I'm incorrect please inform. (Think about it --- who was the Munkatcher Rebbe talking to? It was to all the people who were going to shul, keeping kosher, etc, but working on Shabbos.) Also, the 5-day work-week which started beginning in the late 1920's was largely the result of Jewish Labor movement leaders (who were not necesarily religious but were saddened by the loss of Shabos as a day of rest for their brethren) working with other unions to get rid of the 6-day work week.

Moshe here. The reason the same words keep being repeated over and over forever goes back to the thing we discussed about it being a sort of mantra meditation idea. Any phrase that has deep importance could be repeated over and over and over and it keeps getting deeper each time. Especially when done in a song and even more so when dancing in a circle/spiral. The reason this phrase is important to us is as follows. The term means "my dear Jews in America" it was a phrase at the beginning of a message from a really famous and holy Rabbi in Europe. He was at a grandchild's wedding in Europe and they had television cameras there. He heard that the footage would be broadcast in America. He heard about the situation in America in regards to Shabbos. Many Jews didn't keep Shabbos because of the hardships it entailed as we see in this video. Right away, he looked at the camera and passionately left this message: to my dear Jews in America, you could keep Shabbos! If you keep Shabbos, everything will be good! A small clip of this footage could be seen at the beginning of this music video. Looking forward to hearing more from you! Keep em coming, they're fascinating!

Actually took a break from my shabbos cooking and cleaning prep to watch this! This video was popping up for me all week and I kept thinking, naaa. So glad I watched it here first! What a beautiful journey this song and video took us on- with the change in rhythm and style, vintage and modern visuals etc! We are so lucky nowadays to not have to struggle (for the most part) with shabbos observance. This video and song (in all its length 🙂) really brought that parallel to life and how lucky we are to be able to celebrate shabbos after all the sacrifice prior generations had to make! Very touching!

It doesn't look like anyone pointed this out yet, at the start of the video (at 1:50) you had an old man, who was the Munkatch Rabbi, who said "Teiere Yidden in America" (my dear Jews in America) "Heet Shabbos Vet Ach Git Zaan" (observe the Shabbos, and it'll be good for you), this video is from 1933, and the entire song is based on his words. The video was at the Munkatch Rabbi's daughters wedding in 1933 in Munkács (Munkatch) which is now located in Ukraine, where apparently more than 20,000 people attended the wedding, according to the local press, the TV crews were there, hence this very rare footage was possible back then.

6:30 is when the moment I was waiting for to happen. The realization of this is what was in the Peter video. And he decorated his Sukkah with the pink slip. Was yelling at the screen about that! The song is not specific to that fellow, just the reality of what it was like back in the day for Jews to keep Shabbos. Also, they didn't end a few hours earlier. In America Saturday was a regular work day. Only sunday was off.

Yidden means Jews. This is in reference to the Jewish immigrants in the early 1900s where they would have to struggle with the notion of observing Sabbath because it meant losing their job. Again. This went on weekly. The words are taken from the Munkatch Rebbe who lived in Europe at the time. When he heard about this struggle he sent out a passionate speech to them to be strong in their faith and keep the Sabbath properly. The speech was made when he saw reporters who came to film a huge wedding (I think it was his daughter's wedding) and was told it will be aired in the USA. He took the opportunity to passionately plea with the Yidden in America to remember to keep the Sabbath.

As you figured, this was the norm in those days. Any of us that have ancestors that lived in America at that time have the pride that they got the pink slip (generally many times, for some it meant barely bringing food home to their family since many factories wouldn't hire if on their interview they said they don't work on Saturday). It was actually one of the biggest reasons Jews were afraid to come from Europe to America: they were afraid either they or their descendants will eventually assimilate.

I was busy working yesterday and then going straight to preparing for Shabbos. My kids kept playing this song in the background, to the point of annoyance and I had no idea why they were so busy with it. Now I saw your reaction , and I see why they kept replaying it. I do agree though that it's slightly too long. I could see myself singing this to myself as I prepare all Friday for Shabbos. By the way, I work for a non Jewish employer and I feel blessed that I am not given any pressure to leave early on Fridays. I do have to put in the work on Sundays or evenings instead , but I am still not pressured. My mother and father though always were given grief for leaving early on Friday from work. Even if they wont be given a pink slip , the comments and the attitude towards their leaving early makes it very difficult. And by the way, when we come home , we work really hard preparing ...it's not easy. I wake up very early on Friday so that I get a headstart on Shabbos prep BEFORE I start work and then I'm on overdrive as soon as I finish working at about 1PM until candle lighting time. Thank goodness we then have Shabbos to rest after the mad dash.

Yidden means Jews in Yiddish. In the early 1900’s, when Jews came to America from Eastern Europe, observing Sabbath was difficult, and as Shloimy said people had to find another job every week. It was a difficult time, because of what was known as Blue Laws, under which businesses were closed on Sundays. That has changed, but preparing for Shabbos has basically remained the same, with added technological devices to turn off and put away. You got the gist of the song right away. Wonderful review, as always!

The story starts around 100 years ago (before that period most Jews who came to America started to assimilate quickly after arriving) when the first religious Jews who fought to remain religious started to arrive on American shores. My grandfather, for example, came in 1929, a 20 year old, leaving his family behind in Europe. He passed away 25 years ago. He said he was fired from five different jobs, and then he showed us the termination slips that he kept all these years. It was a source of great pride for him. This is a very common story and similar stories happened to everyone who wanted to keep shabbes in those ealry days of the Jewish religious community forming in America. Part of it was that the new arrivals filled only minor jobs in the factories, easily replaceable jobs. And many immigrants, Italian and Irish, as well as many Jewish workers, competed for the same jobs. Another part was that the Jews who were already established in America were sometimes out to teach the new arrivals a lesson in dropping Judaism the way they knew was kept for thousands of years, so the question of keeping both shaboos and their job turned into a culture war between very reform and very religious Jews, the former taking part in discouraging religious Jews from keeping shabbes.

Food that stays cooking is on the low temp as to not burn. A/C set to correct temp. Toilet paper cut (yea it's a thing). Table set. Candles ready for the wife to light. Lights turned off in the fridge. Shabbos lamps (lights that have a rotating cylinder around the so you can block the light when spun) turned on. Phones off and put away. All item that we can't use on Shabbos are also needed to be put away as we are not supposed to move such items (to prevent accidental use). It becomes second nature after a while.

Im not sure I feel the video was long as it had to tell the story. Back in the early 1900s Shabbos was a bit of a burden. Because you would work 6 days and then lose your job. But if you were a proud jew you would be happy to lose your job for the sake of Shabbos. That is why the song had a sadder tone. The second half was a much happier tone because these days shabbos is well respected and a jew can easily keep it. He shuts down his world and doesn't worry what tomorrow will bring as it will continue after shabbos as it did before.

So they got kicked out from their jobs every Friday to make thier father in haven happy……so the video gives strength to the Jews today’s generation to keep shabbes and to remind them how hard people struggled then to keep Shabbat and how easy it is today’s days….so it basically shows how they struggled and how happy they were to get kicked out from thier jobs to have the opportunity to make thier father happy…..

In that times they didn’t hire a mostly Jewish work force. it was the times that factories were started they had a few hundred employees. some Jewish ppl leaving didn’t effect them enough to change their policies

The words they keep repeating comes from a famous rabbi prewar in Europe the (Minchas alazar) his daughter’s wedding was televised and when the camera came up to him he asked what it was and was told that the Jews in America would be seeing it so he sent the message my dear brothers in America Protect shabbos and it will be good for you and it kind of turned in to a slogan

Ok my view and some context. First, Yidden are jews. The lyrics translated are "dear jews in America, keep shabbos and it'll be good for you", and the small clip of the rabbi at the beginning is the basis for this song. By us jews, it's well known the Jewish american history, specifically regarding the hardship of keeping shabbos in those days. Many many jews didn't manage to cope with the constant pressure changing jobs, and eventually stopped observing all together. The stories of those who kept strong are inspirational to this day. (The firing cards are kind of symbolic, as it expresses the devotion and sacrifice to keeping the Torah. (Kudos for remembering the story, we knew we could count on you 😉.)) Note also the time transformation (9:30) moving forward 80 years or so, and basically having the same worries on Fridays, just in modern terms (getting ready etc. not the job firing part of course). In hindsight, I agree that the video could I guess be done a little shorter. Must say, when the song came out, I told myself I need to listen to this in case PortuguesePai does a video on it, and sure enough here you are 😀!
