Hershey's Bar Brass Casting - Sand Casting a Hershey's Chocolate Bar - Brass Scrap to Treasure - TGS

Ойын-сауық

Today I tried my hand at sand casting a Hershey's chocolate bar with petrobond sand. I open poured the bar as I need to make some new flasks for two sided casting. The heat in Arizona was no match for the chocolate bar, but I pressed on. It didn't turn out the way I wanted it to, but it was a fun time nonetheless. I hope you enjoy watching my process and what I went through in this episode as much as I did making it... 👍

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! I had a lot of fun trying to sand cast a Hershey’s bar with some scrap brass I had laying around. It didn’t turn out perfect like I had hoped, but this weeks custom jam made up for it for me… I hope you all enjoy it and I’ll see you soon!!

Cool idea for a project, and great video! Tips (should you try this again): 1. If you can, take your bucket of sand into your house the day before so that it will be cooler when you go to use it. 2. Get a can of compressed air/gas that's used to clean keyboards, or better yet, a 6-pack of cans - they sell them at Walmart and Office stores. Put the little red tube in the nozzle, then turn the can upside down and pull the trigger. The gas in the can is liquified due to the pressure. This liquid will spray out and evaporate on whatever you shoot it at, instantly cooling it. You could cool the top of the concrete floor, giving you more time for the molding, and if the chocolate still melted, you could harden the little bits in the sand for easier removal. (often times it cools things so rapidly that frost will form from moisture in the air - give it a few seconds and the frost will disappear)

Next time use a dark chocolate bar. The dark chocolate ones melt at a higher temperature. Also maybe try putting a bag of ice on the cement before to help cool it off too. Hopefully this helps and another great video

Rather than using ice it might be better to keep a block of polished stone in the freezer and make your mould on top of that.

Great idea. I was a bit worried when the molten brass didn’t make it into that one corner. I totally missed it not making it into the second. I guess that’s why most people cast round stuff, probably some physics thing with viscosity of liquid and surface tension. Thanks for sharing another video so quickly.

Thanks Jim! I was worried too, especially because that tiny bit of chocolate was there blocking it. I need to build another flask and I’ll try it again at some point. Maybe with a regular Hershey bar with the big letters. 👍

Peehaps cooling down the petrobond sand, the Hershey bar, and the surface that you use as a base would've made it a little easier to mold. Still, it's a nice piece! Thanks for posting! Happy 4th of July!

With high heet and with chocolate having a low melting point. The next time you cast milk chocolate, you can freeze it first and then just before you set the chocolate down. You can blast the table top with a fire extinguisher which will lower the surface temperature giving you a little more time before the candy starts to melt.

Another idea based off of this one, you could try the plastic two-piece eggs used at easter. A big metallic egg would be cool. Also, could try a coke bottle made of glass, remove the lid and use a sand cast. removing the bottle from a sand cast with the lid on I think would be impossible.

Id say the hershey bar came out pretty good considering the chocolate melted, coule easilly have destroyed all of the detailing completely. Besides, I always thought hersheys was supposed to be able to stand up to high temperatures, hence why they used it for army ration chocolate.

It looks perfect to me. I mean, you took a bite out of the corner of the bar but other then that. LOL. In all seriousness, maybe next time try putting some of your sand in the fridge for a little while before covering your chocolate bar. That might help the chocolate last a little longer.

Hey my friend!!!! Do not worry sometimes things do not turn out like we wish them.. I thought it turned out great honestly... seems like it was actually perfect.. A Hershey bar in the Arizona heat... looks like it was just starting to melt and had a few nibbles here and there... yes I would agree the frozen bar was a great idea but the sand being cooled and the surface you working on being cooled beforehand would have helped also.. But like ya said.. a learning experience... now I do have a question as I looked for info on this.. but what filters do you use for fumes on your respirator? like p 100's or something else.. I ask because I am going to take the plunge.. I need a hobby bad and have access to tons of cans I can melt and a neighbor does clean ups on construction sites at times and gets wire alot... will make him a deal to get it from him LOL also curious as to your sanding routine and grits you use to polish. also best deals on petrobond sand? amazon?? also what 3d printer do you use?? am looking to get one of those also soon as casting has really gotten my attention.. been looking at how to make different reusable molds... but honestly do not think there are really any truly reusable except for anything made out of iron or graphite.. but been told there are ways to do so... also wax casting is something I have been looking into also.. If you hae any suggestions for equipment and gloves and such please let me know. Oh on a side note .. the back of the bar looks like it should have a face on it like the Necronomicon does .. Be well and stay safe in that heat my friend !! much love and respect to you and your family.. Thanks for the video as always and any info or links ya drop to me.. I didn't see an email or would have asked in an email..
