This was the first board game I played, way before finding other board games. I have so many fond memories of me playing HeroQuest with my cousins and friends, and seeing this beauty now brings all those emotions back. I like the splash of color on the walls instead of them being all gray, and I also like their height. You can easily tell the rooms apart, but their low height allows players to view all the models at all times.

Particulary confused on the D2/D3 rooms... no matter how I lay them out it doesnt seem to work right for the walls. Thanks again for all this it will still end up amazing in the end. The guy behind DungeonWorks has also been recreating all the old Hero Quest miniatures through his Patreon (and then they're put up for sale afterwards). So far he's done the Barbarian and the Wizard (and not just one miniature of each, but a prototype version, the classic version, box art version, advanced HQ version and a female version) of the heroes and the Skeletons, Chaos Warriors, Zombies, Mummies and the Chaos Sorcerer (some of these have several versions too, like box art versions etc.). gamedecor.com/monstrous-encounters/miniature-figures.html - go down to HQ www.patreon.com/monstrousencounters/posts If you're looking for non-3D printable minis, then Zealot Miniatures did a Kickstarter for new versions of the heroes and monsters, which you can get in either resin or metal. They delivered the first wave of miniatures back in January, so those should be available on their website soon-ish (the whole pandemic has slowed things down a bit) and the second round of minis from them are just about to get cast. www.kickstarter.com/projects/zealotminiatures/twisting-catacombs-litchmyre-dungeon/description

A lot of people buy the Ender 3 v2 for $260 but you will need to fiddle with it to get it tuned in. The Ender CR-6 is a step up with auto-leveling at $400. If you want hassle-free, get the Prusa MK3S but it's pricey at $750 (kit) or $1K prebuilt.

A good entry level one is the Creality Ender 3. Tons of people have them so you can find support online fairly easily. They are cheap but require quite a bit of tinkering and adjusting to get it to work correctly. If you have the funds, I recommend the Prusa MK3S which is a workhorse with minimal upkeep and auto bed leveling. Finally, the Bambu Lab X1 is dummy-proof but will cost the most.

Those are pretty standard 3D-printed pieces. If you don't have a 3D printer or access to one (I have neither), you can make one yourself. In fact, you can make yours nearly as modular if you want to. It's really easy to work in foamcore and styrofoam dinner plates. I suggest cutting 1 inch squares out of the plates with scissors and using a 28mm grid on the foamcore. Cut your foamcore down to a hair over 29 by about 21.5 inches. That'll give you a quarter inch or so on all sides. If you can arrange to sub birch for foam core, you MIGHT consider cork in place of the foam, but … I'd keep the foam, personally. Less "3D" that way, but I can just draw cracks in the tiles with a ballpoint pen and glue my tiles with a gluestick. The 1" tiles and 28mm board squares are on purpose-creates nice grout lines between the tiles, and it's a good size for the HQ models which are a little crowded on 25mm and claustrophobic on the standard 22mm. Glue stick or low temp hot glue the plate tiles to your foamcore base, ballpoint to draw patterns/cracks in individual tiles, modpodge (carefully and in sections to reduce warping potential), use cheap acrylic craft paints and ink wash to add depth. Spray urethane (lightly, in coats, from a distance) to seal. Tips: Make the board ~31x24 inches (a little more if you want a margin) to make a back side with a "German" HQ board grid. Like, I'd just paint it dark gray and draw the grid in fine point silver sharpie and urethane it to use with Black Magic Craft's foamcore tiles. glue wooden coffee stirrers to the edges to make them stronger and less able to warp when you modpodge them. If you make all the HQ rooms (and central room a 6x6 square), you can make a bunch of 2x* corridor tiles for modular AHQ-style layouts. Shave those tiles so the stirrers are part of the room and you could put it together as a German-style board. The question always becomes though… BMC's tiles were two-sided. But they're gonna slip around if they're small. I'd make the tiles one-sided and make them non-slippy.

@@knghtbrd Definitely an option to hand-make the board. What I like about Dragon's Rest though is the magnetized walls that can be easily swapped out for doors, which is a gameplay mechanic for HQ. What solution would you use for handmade walls?

I use a brand called Fiddly Bits from Bunnings our big hardware (home improvement) chain store. It is only about US$3 but the catch is the only flat colour is black, all the others are high gloss which is really suitable for painting over. I find black priming does work most of the time and for occasional use I do have a few cans of Rustoleum and British Paints which are a similar price to each other and are still much cheaper than Army Painter or Games Workshop.
