I used to think it was trite also. Once in a while someone would say it to me with the utmost sincerity (for example on Veterans Day). I realized it was their way of expressing gratitude (I'm a former Marine) and I could accept it with humility and say you're welcome. So even though I have not been elected to speak for anyone else, I wanted to say I appreciate it. Express your love to your loved ones and have a happy and safe life as well.
