Heroes Of The Battle Of Britain: A Nation Remembers

Check out our show Real Fake History's episode on the Battle Of Britain! 👉 • What If Nazi Germany H...
The Last Of The Few takes a detailed look at the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight as it prepares for its 50th year of display & commemorative flying with a thrilling display at the Biggin Hill International Air Show in 2007. As Spitfires and Hurricanes undergo servicing and maintenance, the Avro Lancaster heavy bomber of the Flight is stripped back to its skin for a major overhaul. We follow the work involved as these aircraft are reinstated in the markings and colour schemes of machines flown by courageous and outstanding aircrew of World War II. Exclusive interviews with personnel of the Memorial Flight reveal the passion and enthusiasm that lies behind the expertise of those who maintain and fly these magnificent aircraft. Pilots who have previously flown the latest jet fighters describe the excitement and techniques of flying these classic warplanes, especially the huge Lancaster bomber. And in stark contrast, interviews with veteran aircrew of Fighter and Bomber Command, provide a chilling reminder of the reality of operational flying in hostile skies. Dramatic archive footage from WWII illustrates differences and similarities with the flight of today, while new material, shot with the full cooperation of the Memorial Flight, on the ground and in the air, allows us to participate in the Flight’s preparations for the display at Biggin Hill and the display itself.

When people tell me how beautiful the polished engine cases are, on my 650 Bonneville, I tell them "They are made from the same alloy as a Spitfire".

When one studies the war time aircraft it takes abit for the realization to set in just how many gave their lives in them and just how violently these men died. It is to them the battle of Britain flight should always be remembered. Sacrifices made so that others may live will never be tarnished unless forgotten. As for me allowing those sacrifices to be forgotten is the ultimate form of disrespect and dishonor. This American was choking back tears during this program, I only wish the United States had such an honorable flight of warbirds as well. The fact the Battle of Britain is maintained by the R.A.F. makes it really special as it is like they never stopped serving since their days as front line aircraft.

Ha! I have discovered it, too. Almost like Poland, although we did not have any colonies, only our fresh independence... The Russians and Germans hate our country to this day...So yes! Great Britain has been robbed from her Empire status by... democratic and peaceful USA... We can now hear the laughter of history...

I’ve always wanted to fly a ww2 era fighter. I’ve often wondered if I could build one but after watching this maybe not. If a pilot was thousands of hours has to train again then someone with no experience probably couldn’t.

@@Sterlingjob Yes, but often manufactures take production parts they have tooling for and just change the housing. The same arm, bladder, etc or motor in a new housing. I bet the Griffin used the same parts as latter inline engines.
