Imperium is falling apart lmfao, look at the Necrons - you only beat them at Kronus, and lost hundreds of battles versus them (1 necron is as strong as 1 SM and can't die)- Meanwhile, Eldar prophecies that the Tau Empire will be great - we just need to get rid of out Ethereals

the imperial guard is the backbone of the imperium itself. they are the hammer that smashes into the defense lines of the foe to disturb them and the space marines are the medic knives that cut through the enemy weakpoints to win the battle

Actually, those heroes who push the line, and survive, often get invited, to be a Space Marine. It's rare that one repel the invite, and stays... some do it for power, but most do it because of their brothers. But, most important: For The Emperor of Mankind and for our Holy Sanguinius!

warhammer 40k: the only place where a lunatic with a chainsaw is considdered a hero

There are billions of heroes in Warhammer 40k great video

This makes me think of the Adeptus Mechanicus more than the IG or SM. I keep picturing Skitorii, Secutors, and Warhounds just marching onto the battlefield to face the Heretic threat, opposite them a legion of far more experience Dark Mechanicus warriors.

It is the Adeptus Sororitas, they used to be some kind of military police for the Space Marine chapters, but are now the armed force of the "church", as they may not have "men in arms" in their service. Awesome Flintenweiber!

by m42 most chapters do not operate on chapter strength or company strength except in dire emergencies. Space marines tend to get fielded from whatever multiple chapters can be spared in numbers as few as 3 or 4. These are still considered ridiculously powerful assets.

Damn that music reminds me of some track for a Saturday-morning super hero cartoon. Very fitting considering the movie is about heroes.

The Guard are the Hammer AND Anvil. the Space Marines are the hidden blade underneath the Long sword. The Men of the guard are the anvil and the tanks and arty the hammer. hence the reason many guard player hell "Im bring down the hammer" when they launch arty strikes.

I've been a fan since I was, like, 5; and even I don't know half the time XD I think the Primarchs, essentially the first 20 Space Marines ever created, and father of the 20 space marine chapters (Half of which turned to chaos), where scattered accross the galaxy by the Chaos gods, by the time they could be recovered, at least 2 of them; Sanguinius, the Blood Angel and Lemun Russ of the Space Wolves; were mutated. Sanguin had wings, Lemun was a werewolf.

To be honest, the Guard have won plenty of wars on their own, without backup from any of the other armies of the Imperium - what a fair amount of people like to forget is that while the Space Marins are certainly the deadliest of the Emperor's soldiers (by and large) and while in the continuity they definitely see a lot of service, the fact is that they're extreme emergency forces - most guardsmen go their entire lives without seeing a marine and fight myriad wars in spite of that fact.

you'll never see the back of a Mordian Iron Guard regiment...unless you and they have fought to the last man and you slid between the man's legs just before he cut you down.

The Imperial Guard provide the numbers that Space Marines just do not have. They hold what the Imperial forces already have and make pushes where the enemy is weak (costing millions of lives). They can and do win major battles and wars but it takes time and alot of manpower. Space Marines have more individual skill and strength. They assault key targets but rarely have to hold the line. SMs speed up the process of winning wars, reducing the casualties inflicted on IG. They are both essential.

The majority of Chapter recruit their aspirants from those that A) survive to be 10 years old roughly, and B) those who have shown themselves to be the best of the best of the best in their own respective cultures. One can not join the Adeptus Astartes for personal elevation. The Chaplins and Librarians will break your mind and find that desire long before one would complete their initiation. There are cases on fully matured marines learning of desires they never experienced before.

in The Texas chainsaw massacre they call them Leather face and is frowned upon for his brutal chainsaw murders. In 40k They call him a Priest and carving the enemy bits with brutal chainsaw force gains him much respect.

One thing i really love about the Warhammer Pen & Paper RPG games ("Rogue Trader", "Dark Heresy" etc) is that, if the GM does his job right, is that they really nail home that the real heroes of the Imperium isn't some noble knights in shining armor with golden hair and perfect skin. No, the real heroes are rugged, battleworn, scarred mean sons of bitches who will never get any real credit for their actions but still keeps on doing their duty because the alternative is the doom of mankind.

i was speaking in a tactical manner. the size and holding power of the guard act as the anvil while the sheer speed and ferocity of the marins act as the hammer.

So, you could say that the Marines are for the Spec-ops, behind enemy lines, forces, where as the Imperial Guard get's things done. Dirty, slow, and well organized. I'd rather be an Imperial Guard than a Space Marines just to get a glymer of that glory in battle.

The Imperial Guard is made from the most basic of soldiers to some of the best in the Imperium. The only warriors better than the Kasrkin are the Space Marines. The Guardsmen are the backbone of the Empire, for they defend most planets, while the Space Marines only come when the battle is un-winnable.

A great commander can make even an army who seems obsolete become a great force while a terrible leader can loose even the easiest battles. Attila and his Huns are an example of the first. There is no army with better tanks than the Imperial Guards and no empire has more of them. The Space Marines are not soldiers. They are the skirmishers. They can deploy quickly and hold, but since each chapter only has around 1000 soldiers, who each might be equal to 1000 guards, they still need them to help.

Most Guardsmen regard the Marines as demigods. Few would ever see them in action even if they were in the same warzone. They certainly wouldn't feel resentment due to their absence..

Guardsmen must be constantly thrown into battle to hold a line or push forward. Sometimes resulting in thousands of deaths, if not more.

Yes. The Space Marines are the favored elite, below them you have the ludicrously well geared Sisters who are not that far below in terms of armaments and a match in faith, and below both, you find the common Guardsman, equipped with none of the wintastic gear and with fear in his heart, yet, together with billions of brothers and sisters, he faces the horrors of the galaxy every day, while this galaxy spanning army that is the brunt of imperial might dies and bleeds in the millions daily. It is one thing to go with super gear and magic, but another entirely to go with almost nothing but your will to live and to fight.

Fitting that this ends with Ragnar Blackmane, my favorite character in any movie, book or game :D
