Over heating is always a big concern with new GoPro’s. Great testing Danny, and thanks for sharing.

Great job Danny This was ONE of my main concerns with the "new" camera. I was hoping for a larger overall camera size to help with the overheating issues, maybe allow for more hardpoints to mount accessories, as well as a larger rear screen and maybe an onboard audio interface. I understand they chose not to increase the size to help older camera owners (8/9/10) use the existing ecosystm of peripherals. I just think they could have done a better job overall. However, 10bit color is a massive improvement, along with ther extra framerates (worth the extra cash by itself) and they did say "4" distinct camera lines by the end of 2022. Does that mean GoPro/MAX/Bones/Mini???? Or could they have 1 more camera up their sleeve. . .

Thanks for the test. I would just like to know if in 4K 60P it also goes down. There is no excuse for this to happen to me. When we buy a GoPro, we pay dearly and want it to simply work well. Which is still not the case with the GoPro. It doesn't matter if it's at maximum resolution and maximum FPS. It is simply the obligation to perform well as promised. What does not happen. Thanks for showing this video. I was convinced not to buy the GoPro. I will continue with Osmo Action which does what it promises at maximum resolution and maximum fps.

Great video test. I was going to upgrade from my GoPro hero 7 black but I’m hearing all the reviews are complaining about overheating. Not sure what to do. Did you try how long before the GoPros shut down with all the extras turned off?

Yep the old overheating issue. I do 4K, 60fps or 4K 50fps on the 10. Lately I've been getting 20 mins plus of continual filming before shutdown. Standard gopro battery on mini tripod, media mod and rode mic 2 wireless. Definitely improved a lot since earlier in the year. Could be cooler weather in Sydney or firmware improvements or both. Not sure. But a lot happier now. Thanks for your vid.

@MrBlack so what do you recommend, that I do to get the battery to last a maximum period of time - I'm about to record a theatre piece for about 1½ hour - not more than that. I've had It going this evening - after 42 minutes it overheated. I have the GoPro Hero 11 Creator with the handle put on while filming.

Glad you posted this video been wanting to get a newer gopro for a while as i only have the hero 3 silver +,and i do 100% agree people want everything and expect to not have any issues with their stuff getting hot regardless of brand. as well as Gopro themselves posting in the comments there was no air flow there for it was steady heat and no movement. keep up the good work sir!

How is it then that DJI can do the Action 3 that does not overheat at all? If it were not for the focus issue, they would have killed GoPro with that. Now both Action 3 and GoPro 11 seem like they are unfinished products to me.

Thank you thank you! Features are features, but it's nothing if you can't use it for a longer time. That's disappointing. I was so excited to get my GoPro Hero 8 Black, only to find I can only use my first 4K 60 video for 15-25 minutes. It seems there's no compelling reason to upgrade still as I'm not an action pro and is for family use mostly. I don't see the point, using an analogy, to get a Ferrari and to use it for milk runs. I know this was a heat test, but I also wonder about live preview while recording, if it is still not available. Just for reference, the 8, live preview while recording is available at 1080p x 60fps or lower. Thanks again for the great simple heat test I'm sure we were all wondering about!

So basically to make it run longer you need to not use aspects of the camera that made you upgrade in the first place. Don't get me wrong I have 2 GP 9's, a 7 and a 6 and I enjoy using GoPro cameras but they aren't exactly knocking it out of the park lately. Makes more sense to buy the used ones being sold by those that have to have the latest.

Hello, I am new to your channel and love the info you have about the GoPro's. I just ordered the 11 for my KZread Channel and I am worried about the overheating. I will be using my GoPro for some outdoor things but mostly for coloring projects and unboxing at my desk. I am going with the GoPro because it's a great prince compared to the cameras that people say to use for KZread. I am disabled so on a tight budget. Can you do a video or just let me know what the best 4K settings would be so I can film at my desk for 2 to 2.5 hours at a time with no overheating? It would be very helpful to not just me but I am sure others also. Thank you.

Thank you for the test review, Danny. I just received my GoPro Hero Black 11 and ran a test for overheating. I set my cam to 4K 60fps and it lasted just over 23 min before shutting down. Hopefully the cam is running properly. I did have it on Hypersmooth boost. Not sure if that adds to overheating or not, but I'm going to try the test again turning off hypersmooth and se if the results are better. OK, I ran the same test but removing hypersmooth. This time it was 26min and 7 seconds. So, turning off stabilization will give you a few more minutes.

Not surprised by the results. Still a pity that DJI came out with their OSMO 3 and already show some quality & reliability improvements over the Hero 10 & Hero 11.

Did you do something in particular to make them overheat? Heat lamp, hot room or is this just them overheating from normal use sitting there? If they're overheating like that sitting in an ambient temperature room, that's an issue.

Never had an over heat issue the way I use my GoPros. But before enduro batteries had plenty of to cold to shoot. All good now.

is it worth to keep the maxlensmod since hero11 have its own 360 horizon lock..thank you danny..😊😇

Hi Danny, Another great test my friend. I use the Hero 10 for my video's and of course have the same overheating issues when filming. I can usually get 17-22 min of recording on setting 4K/60fps and standard internal battery. The use of an external battery has helped extent my recording time and reduced my concern due to overheating. Thanks for the comparison, for my type of video recording I see no reason to upgrade to the Hero11, the Hero 10 will do the job! Like 659.

@@jenniferchavez6607 No prior footage is lost, GoPro just stops recording and shuts down. Must be an internal safety feature to keep from damaging the GoPro. Hope this helps.

It will be interesting to see how the MINI can handle heat with the extra cooling fins on the back and no screens

I own a GoPro 10 for underwater photography, but if they continue with with this trend toward 5.3K, 60 fps, hypersmooth features etc. it may be the last GoPro I purchase unless they offer an alternative to the "black" model with more practical and usable features. High resolution display devices are not easily available and are not inexpensive.

Will be good to see a low light video comparison between the 10 and 11 and even th osimo 3.

My Hero 10 overheats consistently, doesn't charge the battery and has a hard time downloading videos. I highly recomend against getting a GOPRO, there are other options out there that are easier and better, more user friendly that don't pose problems of shutting down when using it for the reason you bought it.

11 had enduro and 10 had the blue. He ran it with what they came with.

I'm adding the Hero11 to my Hero9. I could use a double tripod like the one you're using. May I ask where you got that?

So you ran both of them at highest resolution and frame rates? For those of us that shoot in 4k, I'd like how to know how they both perform at 4k-30/60.

Yeah I record band shows at 4k30 with a power supply plugged in and my Hero 7 black will record until the SD card is full (about 4 hours). I just want to know if the 11 can do that.

@@FastRedPonyCar Hey I have to go Pro Hero 9s and I use them as dash cam. I drove all the way to New England from Florida using them. I power them with an external battery pack and shoot 4k/60 usually. They only overhead in direct sun in the worst of the days of summer. I usually can redirect A/C towards them and keep them running all the time. But at room temp, I would think if not about 85° they should be fine. But yes, I'd like to know how much better these handle the heat/generate heat.

Would the Hero 11 Mini do better in cooling?

1” sensor is Wah we need. The Sony rx0ii it’s still the best image quality action camera even with it’s focusing limitations smh

How long it can record at 0-5 Celsius temp?

With the Enduro battery for the gopro, it's best to fully charge it and then use the gopro outside in the cold with higher resolution and fps

Because of your 3 month review video I went out and purchased the 11 Creator Pack.. I had an 8, but wanted the front facing screen and the creator pack accessories. I just got my first overheating message today, but I believe that in addition to some of the selected secreting that increase heat while recording, running it inside a car (even tho A/C was running) on a 73° Florida day added to the heat and ultimately the shut down. I also want to add that I bet the media mod case adds to the heat soak. Side note.. when it overheats and shuts off it still saves all that was recorded up to that point. WHAT A RELIEF!

4k/60, turn off hypersmooth, turn off connection, turn off gps, 10% brightness, take out the battery, use GoPro Volta or a capable powerbank and hook up the Go Pro Hero 11, take out/retain the battery door, mount on a tripod (if not using volta), environment is indoors, decent airflow and I get 41mins of footage until it shutdowns due to overheating.

Great video as always. However I have to disagree a slight bit. If they're going to offer 5k 60, I should be able to run that with no issues. When there is issues, that tells me a company released something that wasn't ready. But thats my personal view and opinion on that. As for memory cards, I'm personally am a big fan of the Lexar 1066x. I have quite a few and none have failed me yet.

@@KentRoads No the camera shutting down and missing the shot is an issue. Sony had these problems with the RX100 line. They allowed the user to override it. I've not seen reports of any damage from this.

@@KentRoads That may be, but the tests I've seen so far in 4k the gopro shuts down, where as the DJI Action Cam 3 give a warning like the Sony cameras I mentioned, and crucially carries on recording. Of course we'll have to wait and see what happens when the masses get their hands on these cameras. My use would be outdoor (as they are designed for) so there would be good flow, but also direct sunlight.

Can you test also the insta 360 x3?

Hero 12, 4k, 24 FPS -- it's over heated within 45 min and shutdown. I have the right SD card, and updated firmware. Keeping everything to auto or off. I do not understand how are you using this for hours. Can you please share the settings.

Nice video and thank you. You suggested to use 4K instead of 5K to correct an issue that should not even be mine to correct. I disagree with you regarding that. The very reason I bought three of these Hero 10's, is to have the ability for post zoom and pan in post production without losing quality. If I wanted a 4K camera, I would've bought another Hero 8 and saved my money. Thumbs down to GoPro for trying to blame me the customer....never again. Will be trying out the DJI Action 3

Awesome video once again. For me, I'm getting pretty tired of GoPro selling the same camera for the last 5 years. Tired of the contrasty, dark footage that is useless indoors or in anything but bright noon sunlight.

The update improved things slightly for my HERO11, but did not cure the problem. GoPro needs to be honest about their issues.

Sooner or later gopro will have to increase the size (not by much) of the body. Technical limitations are due to the small form factor. C'mon gopro... We all want a 1inch sensor and a mic input socket Great vid Danny 👌

If you advertise 5K 60fps the camera should work as advertise. It's a 500$ camera after all. Overheating should not be an issue when useing the camera as advertised by the manufacturer.

You just answered your own question, a timelapse won't make the CPU suffer, it's only a picture at fixed interval while crunching data at 5k/60 is totally different.

I actually bought 10 when it came out and even with the enduro battery it still shutdown when it is used as helmetcam in Norwegian summer because of cold. My old Osmo Action never had problems, so I have ordered Osmo Action 3 so it will replace my gopro 10 as main camera when out driving.

Jeg har 2 videoer på min kanal hvor jeg opplever at min gopro 10 slår seg av, den første er hvor jeg tester gopro vs insta360 vs osmo action og da slo den seg av i +10c med advarsel på skjermen som jeg viser i videoen (standard batteri). Den andre er "Exploring New Places" hvor jeg bruker enduro batteriet og det er betydelig varmere hvor den bare slutter å recorde under kjøring.

At 4k60 with a metal Cage, I shoot indoors for over 20min and no overheating. At 5.3k60 I got 8-12min during summer indoors and it occasionally overheats. I really think for anything important avoid the 5.3k60 setting on the 10. I can not stress the importance of a METAL cage to avoid overheating.

They have two main problems with the design. It's got a ridiculously powerful chip that runs hot even though you aren't using certain features. It makes it run hot, the chip needs to be designed to work with minim effort, like the amd ARM chips, or SoC chips. The second issue is that a chip that powerful is going to make that battery heat up like crazy with the amperage it pulls to sustain itself, the battery should be located external to the enclosure like the 360 IF they aren't going to tweak the chips power consumption.

And i am here with DJI Osmo action and Action 3 camera filming 2 hours without overheating :)

Maybe black is not the best color for the case and maybe we could have one that is not waterproof and vents the heat.

So lower all the settings and features on the camera so it doesn't overheat? Isn't the point to use the best settings on the camera without over heating? This is exactly why I switched to the DJI OSMO Action 1 a year ago after giving up on the GoPro over heating. Tested the GoPro 10 and OSMO Action 1 side by side and the OSMO Action NEVER over heated. I just don't get why GoPro offers these high resolutions . . . etc. if the camera can't handle it. The design is poor, they shouldn't sell a camera that can't record for more than 10 mins without overheating (unless your in snow or under water). I film outside with the best micro SD cards (same one you showed) and have tried with stock batteries, external battery packs . . . etc. and still the GoPro overheats. It's pretty sad because I've always been a GoPro user until a year or so ago when all the over heating started happen. GoPro has to do better.

I'm disappointed this is still an issue with GoPros. I'm one who has put a Hero 8 on the backstop of baseball games. I use that same SD card and disable as much extra stuff as possible. I attach a long life battery to the GoPro charger so that I can record 2-3 hours of game play. I record at 4K 60fps so that I can zoom in on good plays when making highlight reels. I'm in the northern USA, so games in March and April can be 50 degrees. The Hero 8 overheats often. Sunny days, cool cloudy days, windy days, etc. I was hoping 10s or 11s would have fixed this by now. For 5 years, I used the Hero 3 for this purpose with no problems, but I upgraded to an 8 for the 4K quality.

Did a test on mine : 4k/30fps, Hypersmooth on, GPS on - no overheating, went off because of empty battery at 1h20minutes. 4k/60fps died because overheating 39 min.

Lol im just getting into go pro, have barely used it. Not looking forward to troubleshooting this issue or using external batteries
