Hermitcraft is the best collaborative show on YouTube, here's why

Ойындар

Hermitcraft is a KZread show with people like Mumbo Jumbo, Grian, XisumaVoid, GoodtimeswithScar, and 23 others. Right now they are on Hermitcraft Season 10. It is a show about a Minecraft SMP where each member records their own episodes. This is why it's great.

Not to mention the fact that this is run by Scar, who is insanely supported by his friends, even ignoring his disability in a way that is so refreshing. I can see someone playing Minecraft in a wheelchair with a feeding tube and oxygen and his friends never once make jokes at his expense with his disability. They are kind and thoughtful and even when there is a bit that goes too far (the mending book in the prismarine permit trade), there is a resolution that they trust their viewers to see.

I discovered Hermitcraft a three years ago after watching a building tutorial by Grian. I then got my husband into it (he's never even played Minecraft). We're both in our late 40's. Once, when our daughter and son-in-law were visiting, we had them watch an episode, and they were hooked. A few years ago, we dropped all cable and streaming services since we really didn't watch much there. Hermitcraft is one of our top sources of entertainment. I love that it's family friendly but can still hold an adult audience.

I think the best part about hermitcraft is how unserious and collaborative it is. Every other popular SMP out there tends to over-script the events that happen and try to make everything seem as serious and emotional as possible, in a way where smaller creators have nothing to post unless there's a big plot event going on. I think most viewers who like Hermitcraft wouldn't enjoy the linear, sometimes over-engineered nature of series like the Dream SMP, especially since most of these shows tend to post more un-edited videos, or have very occasional uploads with an already limited cast of players, some of which don't even post videos. I like Hermitcraft because the creators there are having honest fun and allowing every other player to do so as well, while showing most of the process that would normally be cut out of a video. It builds a sense of family and shows off what healthy player-to-player and creator-to-viewer interactions should look like, in a way I don't often see in these collaborative gaming events.

I know most people only watch a few Hermits or just one. But it baffles me how they manage to keep to that. Because as you point out. Crossovers happen. I started watching Mumbo in Season 7. Then; when the HCBBS happened and he swapped bases with Scar, I got to see Scar’s insane bases and was like, “Damn this guy is amazing! I gotta check out his videos.” And by the end of Season 7 I was watching both Mumbo and Scar. When Season 8 started I stumbled on the Hermitcraft Recap, which allowed me to dip my toes into others. Since I only started watching halfway through Season 7, so I still felt new to the fandom, when Pearl and Gem joined, I decided to give Gem a go to support her as a new member and loved her content. I also remembered Iskall being really fun with Mumbo and Pacific in Season 7 so checked him out. And when Mumbo and Scar were in Boatem I ended checking out Grian. And by the end of Season 8, I was watching 7 different Hermits. This snowballed more in Season 9 where over the course of the season I saw more and more people do amazing cool stuff and by the end of it I was watching 18 of the different members. With Zedaph being the first one I added in Season 9 and Hypno being the last. Now in Season 10, I was already subscribed to and actively watching Skizz and Joel, so that bumped the number up to 20 Hermits. And I have started watching WelsKnight as well who I am fervently enjoying. So I am up to 21 Hermits. And that is only after being in the fandom since Mumbo’s Season 7 Episode 54. I am no artist in the fandom. But I have written some fanfiction, the first was from the POV of Impulse, the second from the POV of Skizz, then Joel, then Tango, then Joe Hills, then Iskall. The next chapter I plan on uploading is from the POV of Wels. So I’m deep enough in the fandom to be writing fanfics from many different Hermit’s perspectives.

Slowly gathering more and more hermits in your youtube subscriptions is so real though. I only started watching hermitcraft this season (season 10 if anyone from the future finds this comment) but I've already went from just watching Grian to watching him as well Gem, Pearl, Joel, Mumbo, Scar, and recently Bdubs. I've been considering watching Iskall and Doc too, though the length of Doc’s videos have been intimidating to me to say the least, lol. A lot of folks can’t understand why anyone would watch a video of someone else playing a video game. Comparing it to watching someone else play sports is a great analogy. For some it’s the community, for others it’s seeing how far the limits of the game can be pushed, and yet for others it’s the personalities of the creators… or more likely for most it’s a combination of all of those things.

Where everyone was working on their projects but it was a learning space where you could look at everyone’s work and improve your own as well. Builders like Bdubs, Pearl, Gem, Keralis and Grian have brought the true artistry hidden within the game, out of the game; and have each shown the other hermits and then in turn their audiences how to build better or make different type of redstone contraptions that they couldn’t have done before!! Minecraft is a great virtual world to interact with your friends from a distance and be creative but also explore, adventure, and my favorite is when we learn :)

Great video! You've really brought up a lot of solid points! I think you can't highlight enough how clever Grian is in his marketing approach for Hermitcraft. He is responsible for so many of the important events, and has probably cause thousands of people to start watching other perspectives too. The community is so kind-hearted, and the Hermits are each amazing in their own way. Seeing any other Hermit appear in someone's video just puts a smile on my face. The fact that they're able to pull that off is nothing short of amazing.

Another great thing about Hermitcraft that I found particularly great is that you don't have to watch the previous seasons to understand the current one. Some hermits reference stuff that they've done in previous seasons, but they know that they get new people at the beginning of the season. And if you happen to run out of content for the current season, or just want to watch some older Minecraft gameplay, you can just go back and watch any season

Theres also the branching series from Hermitcraft (and also Empires) such as the Life SMPs and the modded series like the vault hunter thing iskall did. All of these add even more content, particularly when the Hermits involved are getting tired of the regular season.

Every single Minecraft community is brought together by this series, mostly the Building and Technical communities but they sometimes do cool PVP stuff (Total Chaos is fun to watch) even if it's none of the Hermit's main focus. The combined knowledge on this server is completely unmatched, except maybe by SciCraft. Docm77 (my favourite), Cubfan, Tangotek (I mean, what even was Decked Out in Season 9? he's insane) Zedaph, Xisuma and Etho are all insane redstoners (Mumbo is also THE biggest Redstone KZreadr) and the rest of the Hermits are all either crazy good at building or are cracked some other niche things (like... VintageBeef's map art ability is just... wow). Iskall even brings the modded community into things as the lead dev of Vault Hunters. But what makes it work as a collaborative server is that they all seem to just click with each other, organically making their own little story arcs, challenges, dramas and just pushing their abilities (like, Doc is at the pinnacle of technical Minecraft at this point, he breaks the game every season with the Hivemind backing him up). Each Season is like a huge work of art, put together bit by bit.

It's ridiculous to think that I have been watching hermitcraft since s5. Started with only Mumbo's pov, then iskall, then grian when he joined s6, then scar, and now Joel. The funny thing is that I started watching it at the same time I was learning english, as it's not my first language, and I learned SO much of the british slangs and English vocabulary in general. So yeah! You can check that out of the reasons I love hermitcraft!

I remember one of the best moments in Season 6, when I first started watching, was when Grian, my main perspective, started interacting with Joe Hills, and I found Joe's humor incredibly amazing. Then I tuned into what might have been one of the best collabs ever, between Joe and Cleo. Everyone was starting to prank everyone else more aggressively, and Joe opens his video with his regular opening, then finishes with the line "Cleo, you woke me up early enough to go to the airport, so come to your base, what's going on?" Cleo responds "I need someone to make it weird, and that's always you." Joe proceeded to build the "Hall of Atonement", which might have been the funniest episode I've ever watched. Then, half way in the middle of the episode, Joe says he's edited all the worst bits of the building process to his video, and he left the best jokes for Zombie Cleo to put in her video. Indeed, I went on and watched the exact same video, from Cleo's perspective, and got a completely different experience. I think that was the moment I fell in love with Hermitcraft. The video is Joe Hills "ImpulseSV's Hall of Atonement build process with ZombieCleo - Hermitcraft 6 ep 53".

Oh man, I'm rewatching that video, and I forgot how good the jokes are. Cleo says "Come look at this sign", and Joe says "I'm literate". It's just the sort of perfect stupid humor I love. Joe goes on this long rant about the history of internet memes, and they both keep burning themselves on a random magma block Joe placed down, and Joe says something like "This prank will hurt to visit, so it should hurt us to build it." It's peak humor.

I found my way over to hermitcraft from minedcrack around s6 I think and it’s been one of my fave smps ever. The only other smps I would consider ‘better’ were more story based and that puts them into a whole diff category. For me it’s the people on the server that make it so good. Especially in this recent season and their decision to b a little less hermit like it has been amazing. The addition of gem and pearl in s8 was a great idea them both being such great creators but in different chaotic way. Then this seasons additions of Joel and skizz felt like something a long time coming w their major involvement in grians life series. Their honest love and respect for one another just makes for some of the best if not craziest moment in Minecraft yt💜

Personally I find one of the best bits of the current season is the fact that they are friends that enjoy each others company, especially when they start procrastinating about getting on with the work they have to do to produce their main videos. This happens mostly on the [unedited] streams (which are often rebroadcast on the hermit's second channels and are often 2-3 hours long). There is almost always a friend on the server they can chat to if they feel the need. The fact that they can still regularly entertain a couple of thousand people when they are doing something as simple as collecting resources )or as hard as doing redstone on stream), or just shooting the breeze with other hermits (and they don't even have Wind Charges yet!), is a testament to their ability.

Amazing video, you summarized almost everything I have to say about Hermitcraft really well. Despite being a funny little Minecraft series, I think it does deserve the overview that you gave it, as a fully fledged show. It's also *absolutely insane* how a show that is this casual in format and simplistic in editing styles has managed to survive this drastic change in KZread content that heavily favours clickbait and fast, energetic, overstuffed bullshit over more calmly paced media. And that's great! Hermitcraft is a true shining beacon, showing what Minecraft and KZread content in general looks like at its peak, and how much potential it still holds. Also, if you like Hermitcraft, I recommend watching Grian's *''Life Series''* (which started with Third Life). It's basically like Hermitcraft, it even features most of the same people, except amped to the max and WAY more combat-oriented and story-based. The main concept is that it's a short pseudo-Hardcore series with a limited amount of lives, where anyone who reaches their final life becomes hostile and is tasked with murdering anybody else who isn't. It's an experience that is very hard to concisely explain, and considering how short most of the seasons are, it's much better watched than explained anyways. The fact that absolutley everybody makes content and produces a lot of points of view, just like in Hermitcraft, works to an even better favour of the Life Series than the aforementioned, as you get to see all the crazy bloodshed, drama and motivations of the members much better. Plus, everybody plays at the same time, meaning the series is consistently jam-packed with super fun and iconic social interractions, thing that is already the main selling point of Hermitcraft, amplified even further here.

Oooh if you do have fun! Speaking as someone who’s been watching for a while it’s a pretty fun fandom to be in. If you want any advice I’d say to check out the hermitcraft recap. They’re not mentioned in this video but every week they put out a video recapping what every hermit did that week it’s a great way to catch up for people joining in the middle of seasons it can also help you figure out which hermit you want to watch. If you’re not sure at first I’d say stating with grian is good as he’s in the center of a lot of things and that will introduce you to the group that’s immediately around him this season. Happy Watching!

7:55 I think the fact the hermits seem to be such genuine friends is why it’s so much better than other smps like Dream SMP. It never feels like there’s any actual animosity or problems between anyone. They all clearly respect each other and the effort everyone puts in and they never make overly destructive pranks like on other smps. It’s refreshing to see a group of friends that just genuinely are just having fun together and not necessarily trying to make any grand storylines.

With Season 9's (my favorite season!) crossover, I'm trying to get into Empires - but then they brought over Skizzleman and Smallishbeans. Holy cow! Can Beans ever build! He's my new hero and that's tough with Scar and Grian there!

Another mention for why HC works so well, the personalities/Hermits themselves: You mentioned a lot about Grian and Mumbo, their own quirkiness as friends and creating chaos, but even beyond them, all of them have different vibes which us as fans get something different with each. Skizz, one of the new Hermits, is self admitted "Not quite as good at the game." But he's got this infectious personality and is able to get along with everyone and create great collaborative efforts and that's made his videos fun and it's nice to see him getting better. Geminitay is basically like the server's younger sister. One second creating a chill vibe with her builds, the next bothering someone else or being chaotic. Then Pearl is naturally silly, but her content also can be very relaxing. Then Zedaph, he's curious George as a Minecrafter with massive creativity not in builds, but just wanting to do the most wacky and insane thing. Then add the point you mentioned about each of them having their own skills in the game. We have Redstone users, builders, terraformers, PvPers like Joel and False, Zed being Zed. It's just a fun community of friends on a server which creates something different from a Minecraft series. There also have been other SMPs which do have similar vibes. Empires when it was around (Oddly enough with some Hermits/a lot of friends of Hermits and they did the crossover) having the personalities mixed with a Roleplay aspect. A number of SMPs over the years do have a similar environment. But Hermitcraft is the longest running for a reason. I guess I agree with Mumbo agreeing!

i have been watching Hermitcraft since season 7, and i don't even need to tell you how crazy it can get sometimes. all around fun time. if you haven't watched it yet, highly recommend. to be honest though, i don't know if i could really pin down one season as being my favorite. every one of them has things i absolutely love about them. 7 felt kinda like a fever dream, as i think i started watching part way through, but it was very fun nonetheless. 8 is when i started getting really invested in it, and i probably have the most nostalgia for it. 9 just felt like what Hermitcraft was for quite a while, just because it ran for so long (ngl i think i might've forgotten that they would eventually end that season for most of it). and with 10, it's just so fun to see everyone interacting and hanging out, and the 'downscaling', if you want to call it that, just makes it feel very cozy. anyway, great video and thanks for taking about it (and reading this if you got this far).
