I think Gem should make a series of short 1-5 minute long documentaries on all the hermits as Anthropologist Gem, talking about their quirks, bases and hobbies. It would be a really good introduction to the hermits while building on her lore!

The artist being a little deranged is very much a classic Lovecraft thing. Which I imagine Dredge pulls on to build atmosphere. Since most of the Cthulhu mythos was spawned from Lovecraft’s absolute terror of the ocean. Maybe you could give them a diary in the house that builds on what kind of creature of the deep is out there.

I’ve been doing permaculture for years! So glad you’re into growing your own food. Some tips 1. You can reuse soil for a different type of crop in the following years to save money and get more out of your soil. 2. You can layer your crops! Try growing peas above, and carrots below to get some extra space. 3. Trimming the bushes and vining crops at the perfect time can encourage more branching which means you will get more produce once the plant transitions to flowering and fruiting. 4. Save your seed. It may mean leaving a little bit of your crops unharvested, but then you will get free plants in the following season, and those plants will be genetically predisposed to growing in your pots in your home. Your plants will get better and better over time if you save seed. 5. Compost your waste materials and use them to boost your plants at fruiting/flowering times. This also means that when you weed, just throw the weeds back onto the pot to give the nutrients back (weed stuff before it starts to seeds if you’re gonna do this) 6. Hand pollinating flowers may help if there isn’t a lot of plant life to support insects in the area. It’s a very fun and cute activity.

i’m from canada you can extend your growing season by starting plants inside (try February to May depending on how long your desired plant takes) we started brussel sprouts in february to hopefully get them grown before first frost in september. seedlings take very little space a window sill or a table by the window can grow a lot in smaller containers before being transplanted later into their final home.

I think a tavern would be a great addition to the village! A place for drawn up sailors, travellers, adventurers and merchants to rest their heads overnight as the waters are too treacherous to navigate in the dark.
A rancher here with some horticulture tips (especially for peppers). Anything tropical or sub-tropical aligned such as peppers, avocados, melons, güisquil. Since you’re gardening growing these is best inside; either in a pot or another container of choice. Eventually the leaves for them will toughen up enough that they can resist the cold or frisky weather (as long it’s not too extreme, of course). Then once they’re mature enough they’ll be safe enough outside. If it’s near a window or an area that gets enough sunlight that’ll be perfect for the seedling to sprout and grow. I live in an area where the weather is pretty unpredictable every year, and this strategy has saved me hundreds if not more from buying new seeds and plants constantly. I’d recommend growing herbs like mint, thyme, and sage. They’re great in tisanes and they are pretty tough plants. They’ll resist very abrupt weather. Anyway Gem love your vids. Keep up with the amazing content!

A pro tip for your peas. Harvest them when they are still on the small side. They are always sweeter and much tastier! If you let them get too big they can get a bit bitter and too dry. But I do agree growing things in your own garden and eating it is the best!
@KageSilver
13 күн бұрын
And if you haven't already, peas like to climb on a trellis of sorts since they are a vine. Lots of water helps them produce fruit, too!
@liataislibrary6667
13 күн бұрын
@@KageSilver Yes yes! Trellis your peas, make sure local pollinators can get to the flowers (bees love them!). Like custom trees, you want to leave some air for your peas :3 It makes them easier to harvest and makes it so pollinators can get to the flowers more easily! It's more of an in-ground gardening thing, but if you want to get more into it, look into companion planting. One year, I grew my peas around a sunflower, and they both thrived for it. The peas' nitrogen fixation helped the sunflower grow stronger and taller, and the sunflower provided a natural trellis for the pea vines. (Sunflowers have some pretty deep roots, though, especially the tall ones, so they're not super container-friendly.) Another plant type to consider branching into -- herbs! Thyme is nice and hardy, and my local native bees love it. Fair warning, though... if you grow mint? KEEP IT ISOLATED IN CONTAINERS. DO NOT PLANT IT IN THE GROUND. Mint is FAMOUS for spreading like gangbusters and being hard to eliminate once it gets in a garden bed. Keep it pruned. Keep it contained. You'll have lovely fresh mint for days, but watch out for it attempting to escape! X3
@liataislibrary6667
13 күн бұрын
Another plant that does well in containers -- strawberries! Look for mountain or alpine varieties; they're smaller, but much more cold-hardy and full of flavor. I had three plants that I kept alive and producing indoors for six lovely years, hand-pollinating the flowers with paintbrushes.
@KageSilver
13 күн бұрын
@liataislibrary6667 Some strawberries are perennials, too. Some herbs are, too, if you want to let them run wild in their own container. You just need to make sure you insulate it well for the winter with foliage or other covers.
@otherdrew8556
13 күн бұрын
Yeah, peas need something to climb for stability, or they'll topple. Strawberries are great too, but I've found is that tomatoes in a deeper container??? They do fantastic. You can have fun with different varieties each year, they give you fresh tomatoes, and they're so lush. The give harvest surprisingly long into fall in Toronto, so I think you'll have no problem whatsoever letting them thrive Gem. Just water a lot, and plant in early spring! :)
"Is he fishing?!" Que ominous lightly strike.
Something to add to the side of the house could be some sort of line extending to the tree with banners hanging from it that are half destroyed, like it's the artists work that they used to display there before going crazy. Something to hang ominously overhead and ground the space while not being too enclosed like another roof/balcony
Tips for your garden: You can grow peppers in the windowcill if you want Dont forget to put a lage climbing stick in the pot with the peas! They can grow up to 2 meters

One thing about growing peppers is that you can get two years out of a lot of the plants, which definitely gives them a head start in their second year! Look up overwintering peppers--when they're in beds you have to dig em up, heavily prune, and replant in a pot to move into a cool spot indoors (in zones that freeze) but maybe if you're already using grow bags you can just prune? I put mine in the garage over the coldest months and had 2 out of 3 survive this year! The 2 year plant is 2.5 ft tall and around (it was printed back to 2 10" branches) and I've gotten 2 dozen peppers off it. The new starts (same variety) I put in this spring are barely a foot tall and have maybe done 2 peppers each.
"Hey Gem, you got any pickles?"😂
Gardening wisdom: 1. Leafy greens grow great in climates with a shorter growing season like Newfoundland. They grow quick too! You can easily fit two harvests in a season, one from May to early July, and one from mid July to September (you can still plant some now!). 2. Next year, to take your potted plant game to the next level, start studying soil acidity, drainage levels, and NPK requirements of plants (it sounds super intimidating but it's rather simple once you understand it!). This opens up the world of potted berry plants or other picky plants as well as making your own compost, which I find very rewarding.
@nyxolydian
12 күн бұрын
Yes! Excellent tips, also note that leafy greens are easy to grow hydroponically which could help save space, but either investing the money in a pre built system or investing the time and research to build your own could deter some people. And learning about NPK seemed scary to me at first, but I bought a cheap soil testing kit online and started nurturing my soil only a bit (and probably not perfectly) and in the years since my plants have THRIVED!!! So to any gardeners out there I can't stress enough how helpful it is to even do a few quick Google searches about how to optimize your soil :)

Peppers are perennial! They can be overwintered in colder climates by cutting back the branches and roots and bringing them inside. We have a habanero that's 4 years old now! I highly recommend looking into it since you already grow them in pots. Also, some greenhouse plastic draped over tomato cages may work as a cold frame for your potted stuff. Depends how big the pots are, I suppose
The cold open was gold! I love that Gem's whole Dredge themed base comes with her own spooky fisherman neighbor
Pearl’s prank had me laughing out loud. Especially the quiet mic at 16:21 with Gem’s exasperation really had me 😂
Hooray! An update to the creepy fishing village 😂 My tip for growing peas--don't let the actual pod/peas get too large. They're tastier in my opinion when they're smaller and younger. ALSO, peas are really easy to propagate by letting a couple pods dry on the vine and then saving seeds for the next year. There's something extra special about growing something from a seed you harvested yourself! 😊 GOOD LUCK 😊
this is by far the most peaceful episode ever. gem got to really work around her base without any visitors. LIKE, that is so rare compared to the other episodes 😭
One of my favorite memories from when I was a kid is going out with my brothers to our garden and eating freshly picked peas and raspberries. So happy for you that you have a garden of your own!! It’s such a good feeling growing food for yourself and so relaxing too!

I absolutely love the battle beach -> Tango's house sight line and the way it's framed by the trees on either side. Beautiful!
Im from BC (i had no idea you were also Canadian!) and one of my favourite things to grow is strawberries. I don’t have to replant them, they come back every year. I actually remember my grandmother telling me to pile on snow if there wasn’t enough on our strawberry patches because it keeps them insulated through the winter. Its just so satisfying seeing them grow bright red 🥰 And basil i have never gone wrong with. Its pretty easy and nice and pretty
Love the new buildings. I have 6 raised beds and several pots for vegetables this year as well as a flower bed that wraps around 3/4 of my house. Growing tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, watermelon, peppers (also not doing well), onions, garlic, corn and giant sunflowers. If your peas are of the climbing variety, you'll have to trellis them so they don't collapse under their own weight.
I grow tomatoes, peppers, squash, leafy greens and herbs. I also can and preserve a lot of my crops. My biggest tip is don't try and do too much at once. Add a little bit each year and know exactly what you are going to do with the produce. That way you don't have 10 lbs of harvest and nothing to cook
Gem: Is he FISHING?! *thunder crashes and lightning flashes*
Last year i grew some basil plants on my balcony, and i was not expecting how huge they got! definitely a good plant to start out when youre getting into gardening as they dont really need a lot of work

I love to hear about peoples experiences with gardening! Especially with sugar snap peas since when I was growing up my grandparents lived in the country side about 20 minutes away and I remember I would walk along their gardens with my sisters and their old dog and pick and eat the peas straight off of the plant! A few tips for them is to make sure that they get quite a bit of sunlight and make sure the soil never fully dries out! They also might not be growing as well because there needs to be a bit of space in between each plant but I think that if they are all in individual pots they’ll be fine! I hope that your gardening goes amazingly! ❤️ Edit: I saw someone say something about when to pick them and I’d like to add that ripe peas are bright in color as well as crisp and sweet. If you wait until the peas are too large inside the pods, the pods get pretty tough and stringy. Harvest any over-ripe pods you see, as well, to encourage your plant to produce new peas. ❤
4:52 I love gem studying the mystery of pearl!

For gardening sometimes its helpful to have your plants in pots so you can bring them inside if theres a cold snap. Overwatering was always my biggest problem so I set some alarms on my phone and kept a watering journal. This was such a good ep. The Pearl shenanigans and some new builds.

Omg a watering journal is so smart, I need to do that cause I always end up killing them with overwatering 😅

Good tips! Adding to that: When bring potted plants in, adding a thick layer of play sand on the top helps stop potential bug problems.
Ahh Gem it made my heart so happy to hear about your garden! No one's pepper are doing well in our state Minnesota because it's too cold. Weather is a huge factor for peppers!
the entire horror boating village project is probably my favorite thing you've ever done and seeing it evolve over this season has been such a treat. Truly inspiring and fun
I love how the hermits are so lucky when digging into the ground to find hidden shulkers/jukeboxes/etc

I think they all (or almost all) have multi directional headphones. So you can actually hear if the sound is coming from behind or below or to the side and zero in on the general area. It is really useful for horror games.

then again, they also have the ability to cut out minutes of frantic searching unsuccessfully until finally happening upon it in the last place you'd expect

@@recurvestickerdragon *yeah* Though when I was watching scar's episode 3, there were no cuts before he found the note block. I'm not sure about Gem's vid tho, as I wasn't paying as much attention.
The pay off for Pearls prank was glorious 😂
Love the gardening rambling. It's always fun to hear about the hermit's interests outside of Hermitcraft
The flowers in the trees remind me of bromeliads and other colorful plants that live in trees! They grow in the trees to catch the sunlight that would be completely blocked out on the ground. The wonderful adaptation that allows them to do so is super sensitive, almost tissue-paper-like roots that absorb even the lightest mist! Lovely video as always, Gem! Thank you for making it!
when gem said "maybe its like christmas decorations... but with pickles" it reminded me of this old tradition, i think its either irish or german but you have a pickle shaped ornament and you hide it somewhere in the house and the first person to find it gets to open their presents first

German I believe and I saw in another comment Gem said she knew about said tradition

A poll of Germans found 91% of them have never heard of it. Its really some weird mid west American thing that might have been started from German colonist but its not a German tradition

I have a friend who is German and she does this! They learned it from her grandmother except they use a pickle ornament instead of a real one. I think a small part of Germany does it and it spread from there as Americans wanted to get closer to their roots.

@@themousehouse I did some reading and it appears that be along the line of fruit and veg decorations were a thing in America but pickle decorations weren't selling so someone made up this "tradition" and it caught on
omg you were actually watching him! I thought he just added a screenshot of Gem there for the drama for his intro but she really just joined and saw that XD
3:48 bro took “ I’m in ur walls “ to a whole new level
Scientist Gem studying Pearl and her pickle obsession is giving me life :D
Every gem needs her fishing grian
if you want to make the base even darker, you could maybe hire Cleo to do some armorstands that look like bodies underwater, or maybe some creepy fish from the game. or maybe even some skulls or skeletons on spikes or hanging from trees, if you really want to go into those darker elements.
Hey! I'm a crop scientist and LOVE gardening :D i love hearing how your gardening is going! I think pot gardening is super underrated! I grow potatoes and carrots in reusable sacks! They're nice and deep, so lots of root space! You should give strawberries a try too. They come back year after year for me (I'm in Norway) when insulated from frost in the winter with straw, wool or horticultural fleece! With peas, I had a bit of a learning curve with these too, I found that they were growing so much but it didn't translate into much crop. Since I've been cutting them back more and trying to promote more flower growth to get more to harvest:)
I love how Gem imbues the builds with character and lore... The paranoid artist storyline makes such a small build feel so meaningful! ❤️❤️
