Hermit life - easy or not?

Is it easy to live as a hermit? Many people would say it is an escape from the society and hard life but I will never agree with them. Hermit life, especially if it is spiritually oriented can be very challenging.

I always felt like a hermit and the one thing that I wouldn't miss is another people's drama and their dirty looks or judgement and hate, If you don't fit in their world create a world of your own! Hermits are lost souls and damage souls and nobody bothers you and its peaceful and people probbaly have many reasons to live alone, nobody cared about them! You can call your shots and be your own boss and do what you want! People always hated me and they still hate me and its better to be alone than have false friends. I like being alone!

It was so peaceful just listening to you talk. I dreamed of living in the forest & anytime I would go camping for a week or two I never wanted to come back to society. My problem is as a woman I was afraid to go alone. I know many are not. I ended up in the country with a house, a garden every year, preserving food and making most of my clothes. I still dream of this life but now older I'm grateful for pension and health insurance. I would suggest for those who would like this lifestyle to do it when your young. As you get older, you never know what can hit the fan. Health problems... I live as a subsistent farmer & I think it's the next best thing. 😊

Shaming people works to some extent. As someone who was constantly shamed, treated as a pariah and alone throughout my childhood. You'll eventually stop caring about what society thinks of you. This is just my opinion, but it's better being around the dangerous wildlife than spending time around people who spite you. Most animals in the wild do not harm out of spite, but I know plenty of humans who do.

I told my dad I wanted to live alone in the wild, he called it unnatural, as if working a 9-5 is. Screw that. I'm either ending it or living freely without having to listen to other people.

I agree. I hate working for someone 9 to 5. In Finland work week usually 40 hours with lunch time included and few breaks. I just don't like it for 4 week vacation a year. Usually what i suggest to live, live as cheap as possible hermit life, with no friends. Not a whole lot money needed to survive. I collect bottles, at summer I bike usually from 12 and in 13 you are collecting bottles to the end of the day. Deposit them and get money. On festivals, streets, if there are people, there are bottles and tin cans too waiting. I live nice life collecting them and also getting blueberries from woods and selling them is another great method. Stop wasting time at work and live. I am not free form work, but there is no bosses and you can have enough money to pay cheapest rent, few actual bills and food is on table. Traveling by mountain bike "for free". Nothing else is needed, people live extravagant life for stuff and money, not really even living.

Hello my friend. I want to become a hermit, and I want to do it for God. There aren't really any forests here in Ireland, but I would like to move to Germany. I haven't really done anything worthwhile in my life so far. I am now 37 years old. I am subscribing to your channel and I'm going to watch more of your videos before I ask any questions. I actually already live as a virtual recluse at home. I interact with very few people. I have some attachments to material things, especially money. I think I can only survive to a good old age if I leave society behind completely. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.

I have been getting deeper into my Buddhist practices, and currently monasteries are staying closed in Canada due to Covid fears, so Ive been considering taking a personal retreat. I saw your video and I need to tell you that you are quite inspiring. I have no doubt that what holds me back is indeed fear of the mind. Ive been on retreats before in communities, and even that is isolation for the mind, so it knows whats in store and it hates me for wanting that.... :P. I enjoy the cadence of your voice, you truly sound like one who is aware of your thoughts and watches them closely before they become words.

I agree with someone of the hermit life because jobs really are important but in reality, you are basically making somebody else richer. Doing all that work to buy things you don't need that will eventually rot and are impermanent. You just need the basics in life, grow garden, food, good company, weapons, meditation and wisdom. The outside world or society in general, can be insufferable sometimes.

Although we Christians have a different reason and certainly a different approach to it, the usefulness of being by yourself is also the essence of preparing yourself to live in the world and trying to help others. In fact, many of the best Christians or people out there help the most when they are by themselves meditating, praying and listening to Him! Western monasticism actually started (and continues in many ways and places) with retreat in isolation, sometimes for the rest of your life. Our Lord Himself did it when He spent 40 days in the desert and it was not the only time he retreated in the Scriptures alone (most of the things He did are not even written!) You can say indeed that Jesus was the hermit par excellence.

Living in a van, I definitely got some criticism, but I found if you invite them to critique using humor and making jokes about your own situation, they become disarmed and you are then able to offer a new existence for them to see vicariously through you. It can be a great service to be a hermit. Thank yoy for sharing your experience with us

It is the most difficult thing we can do certainly I would say. Well that and probably the military and getting off the opium or heroin for me was all rough too, I had many days or months of crying and pain on and off, and it's still not over til the summer is over. It makes everywhere the wilderness. Even walking to the other room can be an expedition, even laying on the bed an exertion. There's a place near here I'd like to go and be alone in the wilderness for a few days, it's called Shenandoah, it's the giant mountain range and valley that seperated the settlers from the "howling wilderness" that was the west. It's a very epic place, I had some terrible and interesting experiences there with psychedeclic drugs

jungle would terrify me. Once i went on a french exchange and i was put in a room and there were mice running about. I was terrified and was up for the whole night. And those were not even wolves they were just mice!

@@elgekok560 I have been single for 5 years. Not active on social media, I'm an introvert. Maybe to be alone with someone is a good idea too. But I still like the idea regardless if people tell me I am not capable of doing it. I've been told many things that discouraged me. Looking down on other people is not a outcome of solitude. No one is perfect. We all have to start somewhere. I hope you'll encourage more people. Thanks

You should try living with indigenous people first and learn their ways. Roald Amudsen lived with eskimos like 10 years. He could live perfectly in that harsh environment and led the first expedition to the South Pole.

I am sad to say that I tried this a few years ago and I failed. I look back to that time and wish I could do it again (but I am married and have children now) and this time persevere. I encourage everyone who is doing this to hold on and never give up
