Just some background info: - Herman van Veen is THE grand man of musical theatre / cabaret here in the Netherlands with a career that goes way beyond our borders. He is probably even more revered in Germany where he performs in German. The Opzij song is a classis song of his that pretty much anyone here. Even at his ripe age he still performed about 200 shows a year all over Europe. And the the covid crisis hit and like anyone he came to a standstill but .... he kept on working / rehearsing / performing. He lives on a small estate where he has a big room with a stage and every week he would perform his current theatre show there, without audience, no streaming whatsoever, just to keep working. Like he said himself: his voice and his body are the tools of his trade and if you stop using it like you used to it becomes rusty and before you know it you are losing your edge and especially your comedic timing. - Matthijs Gaat Door (Matthijs Goes On) is a tv show that was Matthijs van Nieuwkerk's latest venture. Upto mid 2020 he had a daily current affairs talkshow that was still doing really well but he felt more and more confined in that format so it was decided that the show would end (it was called De Wereld Draait Door which translates to As The World Turns or maybe more cynically The World Spins Out Of Control). In early 2021 he came back with this weekly Saturday late night show which at first got people scratching their head ... "what is it that he wants to do? Is it a music show, is it chat show, is it serious talkshow" but week after week the show came more into focus. It was originally intended to have a big audience in the studio but also here Covid through a spanner in the works. The big band was part of the original plan but having them all spread out over the scaffolding certainly was not but it was a way to do this safe for all involved. Within a few shows it became a haven for performers from all genres, guests who had a music background but where there for something else pleaded to perform with the big band and as a result some iconic performances were captured. This was by far the best tv show I have seen in years and certainly the best music tv show in decades on Dutch tv (yes, even better then Beste Zangers). But it wasn't all about music because there was another segment in the show that touched people probably even more and that was Forever Young. Herman van Veen was also a participant in that segment which was basically a conversation with our referred elders from all walks of life (writers, artists, politicians, singers etc.) about what makes life worth living. BTW, I saw you recently reacting to Kyteman and it is interesting to note that quite a few of the musicians of his band / orchestra are playing here in the big band (certainly the string section but I believe also some of the horn players) and that the violin player dueling it out with Herman van Veen (that violin player is one of Herman's regular on stage musicians) is also a former Kyteman Orchestra member. Kyteman also performs on this tv show under his real name Colin Benders together with Cato van Dijk performing Donna Summer's I Feel Love ... stunning performance. Apparently he liked it so much to perform again with a big band that he is hinting at reuniting the Kyteman Orchestra in some shape or form.

Thank you for your comment. It makes it more clear for foreigners watching this, what the background story is. Herman van Veen is a wonderfull artist and human being performing for decades. Nice that Kyteman is considdering a come-back, and as for Mathijs our former #1 talkshowhost , it must be a great joy to be the host of so much talented people, of various walks of life, from the netherlands.

I'm just seeing this video now. There is something special that i have with Herman van Veen. Many many years ago my mother have had a handshake from him. She have told many times during her life. Almost 4 years ago i have met Herman and he gave me as well a handshake. Then i told him that story from my mother and when my girlfriend made the picture together with me and him, he had his other hand on his heart,because i was so thankful for the picture and handshake, and that was also for him a kind answer/meaning from him! 🙏❤️

The original version of this song “opzij” (meaning: get out of the way) is from a 1979 childrens tv show “ De wonderlijke avonturen van Herman van veen”. I loved that show!

Herman van Veen is a dutch icon. An outstanding performer, with many talents. Not only is he stil giving shows himself. He also supports young artists. Giving them an opportunity to learn, from him and other artists on his estate. There he has multiple stages. He loves to learn new things from young people as well. I have been to much of his shows. Always had great fun.

The song is about the hurry we have every day in life. That's why it has such chaotic vibe. The song is originaly of the old man, Herman van Veen, who is singing in this vid. He is a multi talented artist. Composer, writer, violist, singer, comedian, actor, performing artist, He is trained as a violinist, singer and music educator. He is also an activist for the rights of the child.

My Dad introduced me to Herman van Veen with this song, Opzij Opzij Opzij, I sang Hilversum 3 when I was a teenager, I sang Spetter Pieter Pater with my 2 beautiful sons. Herman van Veen brings me so many smiling memories. This is a stunning version of Opzij Opzij Opzij!

The stage looks like that because it creates the possibility of performing while social distancing. If the musicians are not allowed to get too close next to eachother, then we just give them all their own little room and pile them on top of eachother. Was a genious idea of Matthijs van Nieuwkerk, the presentor of the program.

The man singing and playing the violin that is the man who wrote the song many years ago and this was just a one time special rendition of the song the man is stil so busy doing his shows in theaters that they were lucky that he had the time to do this and he is born in 1945 so at this moment he is 79 years and still does this ...that man has got so much energy that as we say is : ..'" not normal " beter known as " niet normaal" in dutch but you know that by now 😁

As a kid I lived in a station building in the South of the Netherlands, which was partly used by a touristic steam train. Herman van Veen once showed up there with a film crew to do filming with the trains and they were also doing recordings in the stations restaurant. We could hear that very well from our living room. His car was parked right in front of our front door, so I waited after they finished and asked for an autograph. He kindly gave it to me. I told him the music sounded great (he told me he agreed :P), shook his hand and went back inside. He seemed like a very nice guy and he's an iconic artist. I gave the autograph to my mother, together with the CD that contained the music he was playing.

Where it reads 'bitches' he sings 'koetjes', which means 'small cows' from the saying 'over koetjes en kalfjes praten' -> 'talking about small cows and small calves' it's about the same as 'talking about the birds and the bees',Google will never be able to properly translate proverbs, idioms and saying because like in this case we go from cattle to birds and insects

Also: 'sideways' is literally correct when you translate 'opzij', but the context tells us he is shouting it to people that are standing in his way: he is shouting for them to 'step aside!', or 'move out of the way!' , because he is coming thru :)

@@Wrecker3D This is funny. Talking about the birds and the bees is an english expression for sex education. Parents saying: I just had the talk with my daughter about the birds and the bees. "Over koetjes en kalfjes praten" can be translated to: "having smalltalk" I can understand the confusion. Because in: " over koetjes en kalfjes praten" and "talking about the birds and the bees", Both expression are about telling about two animals. Only difference are the animals. Expressions are hard to translate but they are also a lot of fun. I can still remember the face of an American friend when I told him things like: "Now the monkey is coming out of the sleeve"; "You never know how a cow catches a hare"; " If the cat isn't home, the mice are dancing on the table"; "It is raining pipe stems"; "The eye of the master makes the horse fat" etc.

"Opzij, opzij opzij" (Get out of my way, get out of my way, get out of my way,) 40 odd years old song, still I sing it when at work things need to speed up.

I'm friends with two of the musicians on the scaffolding (and work with one of them). They love this show! I miss them, due to COVID lockdown we haven't seen/ spoken to each other in a while. However, I'm happy that they could safely continue working here :) They're so talented!

For the people who are not familiair with the Dutch language: The central word in the song is: OPZIJ (go to the side) You can translate it: "Move over" or "get out of my way" or "go to the side". If you want to sing it, you could sing something like: Move, move, move because we are in an unbelievable rush. Make room for me. We need to run, we need to fly, we need to keep going. We can't stand still anymore. We keep running because we have so much to do. It is for sure not a literal translation but it more about the atmosphere of the song. It explains the tempo of the song and the chaotic vibes. As a Dutch person I loved this performance.

The song "Opzij opzij opzij" dates back from 1979 and was written and perfomed by singer, songwriter, stageartist Herman van Veen. But this performance has been extended quite a bit.😃 It is about society getting faster and faster.

Herman van Veen a True master. He is beyond perfect.

It doesn't happen often with me, but I got goosebumps all over!

That was the absolute busiest song I've ever heard. I loved it!! Too bad I lack the capacity to learn other languages, and I wish I had that gentleman's energy.

Love it so much.

Herman van Veen his goal was to connect different styles of music and artists with eachother. He likes Lauwtje and loves the really musical sisters of og3ne. Fun fact, he asked the sisters only 1 or 2 days before this performance, so they had very little time to practice! Insane how they put this together in such short time

You need more Herman? His version of Leonard Cohen's Suzanne or the song Anne about the birth of his daughter. The man has an unique sound.

One small correction: "Over koetjes praten" is from "Over koetjes en kalfjes praten", so I would translate it more to something like "We can talk about little nothings, football and the lottery" instead of taking the 'cows' literally.
