Great demo! I'm impressed. I have a 33609J, though it works great, I'm forced to use it in multi-mono . LOL I'd be more than happy to use this, while it gets repaired. There's nothing like analog compression, seriously. Keep up the great content! Peace.

Hi David, I am thinking about either buying the fatso elx7 or the Ha609a. I know they’re different beasts but I’m wondering what I would benefit most from for my style of music. Blues/jazz/fusion (you know my stuff from the mix consultation). I have quite some hardware but I think the analog saturation of fatso would be great coz I don’t have that. You think it would suit my music? On the other hand, the 609 sounds terrific and might be more versatile and maybe more useful? Any recommendation? Thanks!!

Great review! I hope you are still answering questions on this unit, as I am considering purchasing one. My only concern is the attack. Are the slow and fast attack options flexible enough to use this both as a dual mono compressor during tracking and a stereo bus compressor during mixing? Thanks.

  • @mixbustv

I wouldn't use this as a bus compressor but, not having a variable attack definitely makes this not the most versatile compressor.

Hey David, I'm looking for a compressor exclusively for my drum bus , between this one and the successor which one would you recommend? Working on pop/trap style of music, just want more grit and analog mojo for the drums. Thanks

  • @mixbustv

Though question, you're asking the guy who as both. They're surprisingly different for being such close to each other design. I tend to use the 609 more even if it has no SC. For rock drums I'd go for the 609, for trap and pop, you might end up missing that SC tho', but it depends on how you use them, if you usually compress drums a lot, get the Successor, if you just touch it for glue and color, pushing the output, get the 609, the limiter is quite useful for that genre

Might be a dumb question, but can you do parallel compression with the HA-609A? I was able to try a Successor and loved it, in large part due to the parallel compression. So I'm trying to decide between the two.

Hello David. I'm glad to see you getting back your channel. I bought the HA609A after seeing your video. But I have a big problem, there is a big floor noise when I raise even a little bit the gain makeup. I don't understand. I change the cables, but it didn't improve. I have other gear, compressors, preamps, eq, etc... but don't have this problem. The HA609A is connected as an external effect on my audio device. As soon as engage the HA the hiss or noise comes ! I'll call them tomorrow, maybe I have a faulty device... Thank you for your videos David, they are helpfull...

@@mixbustv Hi David ! Everything is ok now. I tried to get some help from Heritage Audio and they tried to give me advice, but it seem that they are too busy or closed to respond to each email, although they are nice persons. I got answers through Facebook yesterday evening which was nice. I found out today and on my own what was the problem. In general I'm a bit drastic as far as gain staging is concerned, because formerly everything was too hot. When working with a low gain stage volume I had to crank the output and got a lot of hiss from the HA609A, and since my Tegeler Crème, or EQP-1, and the Manley didn't show a significant loud noise floor, I thought that there was none. But I when I crancked the gain, these other machines showed also noise floor, but much less than the HA609A. So I changed my way of working and everything is fine now. The HA609A adds a nice color to my tracks and I love it ! And for the price it's a bargain ! I just have to understand the limiter section which isn't very clear to me, or for my needs... Anyway, thanks again David for your help; and Bravo for your always interresting videos...

No I don't use it because plug-in limiters are better, brickwall limiting was born digital for a reason, and because this is a compressor, the limiter is not a brickwall limiter, but a high ratio stage of additional compression

It sounds great but i am skeptical, the question is : is it worth buying gear in general? as it looks like in 10 years or less the plugins would be better that the real hardware with similar sound more functions and settings easy to recall and more. To me the only thing that is worth spending money is good pres and converters etc..

@@mixbustv Total cost of ownership is also important to consider with software, in 10 years plugins developped today will not work without licence and computer uprades. Not the case for hardware except for maintenance.

@@mixbustv In blind tests the plugins are almost there, in some years they would be absolutely indistinguishable for SURE. There is a disruptive revolution in computers that's is about to happen in this decade, the x86 instructions will die, new powerful CPUs will be customized for specific tasks such as audio production etc. Spending money for pres and converters is not the same as outboard... You need great equipment to enter in the best possible way to the digital domain, once your sound is digital you processes it only with plugins. Processing audio with outboard means that you convert digital to analog and back to digital , you gain the benefits of your outboard but that processes (going in and out) is destructive, on the other hand plugins will never do that. If you weight the benefits of plugins vs hardware, plugins will win bigtime. To me hardware is for big wallets and in some cases a bait to get clients. There are some romantics that like watching the equipment in work, i used to be like that but since i am not rich nor a successful engineer i need to think clever and instead buying a new hardware compressor use the money to go for vacations in a beautiful island or something :)
